Out Tv packed up after 10 years of hard grind so we had to get a new one. The value options seemed to be an LG smart 4 k thing.

We are both utterly useless at Tech issues, haven't got a clue basically.

Here's the thing.

Sky HD box, LG DVD player used only because it has our surround sound, then the telly.

Now then, seemed to have set it up ok at first, then messed with a few things here and there like you do. I can get the surround sound on SKY fine, I can only get the TV sound on the TV it's self and not use the surround sound. So..Say I want to watch anything on the smart side ie netflix then sky does not seem to flick off because if i turn up the sound on the surround sound whilst watching netflix it is still playing Sky in the back ground, so i then have to turn the surround sound silent and turn up the tv sound on the tv controller to hear netflix.

Does this make sense to anyone?. any insight gratefully appreciated before one becomes very aggressive towards the TV.

I think you need a cable to carry the sound output from the TV to the surround sound device. Depending on the TV model it could support HDMI, Digital Audio Out or both.

Digital Audio is more likely, it would look like this:

And there will be a similar socket on the surround sound device. Currys do the cables for £13 to £50 depending on how much snake oil they contain, I bought this one for £6.

Have you tried turning it on and off?

it's not just the sound issue though it is the fact that sky continues to run in the back ground.

You need to link the audio output from your TV to your surround sound system if you want normal TV to play through your speakers.

I would guess your DVD player and Sky box have wires going directly in to an amplifier of some sort. This deals with the sound for both of those sources.

You'll also have wires from the DVD player and Sky box to your TV which deal with the picture.

The TV all works within itself so in order to get sound to go through something else you need to find an audio output and link it to your amp.

Does that make sense?

Also surround won't work when you're using your TV as an audio source because most TVs only output a 2 channel (left/right) audio signal. Your Sky box and DVD player will output 5.1 (left/centre/right/rear left, rear right + sub) so will send a signal to all of your speakers.

I wish it did make sense because it sounds really easy the way you put it. With these smart tv's does one have to turn off the whole SKY box then to watch netflixbecause if I don't it continues to run in the back ground. What's really anoying is that it worked the first night, I just pressed the netflix button put on a movie and it worked in surround sound it's as if you can not turn over from one to the other so to speak.

So it sounds like you have your TV hooked up to your amp which is good.

The thing is your amp can only handle one input at a time and it sounds like it's prioritising your Sky box over your TV. Do you have a dial or buttons on your amp so that you can select which source it's working from? You might be able to manually tell the amp to use you TV as a source.

Usually if everything's HDMI it figures it out for you but I can understand that if you have two sources switched on it would get confused.

Sounds to me like either you need to switch off the Sky box or just manually select your TV using your source selector.

You must have loads of remotes.....

Don't think I have an amp,  however I might have, now do you see how thick I am. It is taking over my life, I am becoming obsessed with the bloody thing.

A DVD player.

Going to post a picture tomorrow because if I continue tonight there may be nothing to photograph soon.

Thanks for your patience both.
