Was saying to a mate un temp looked like a dodgy ride last time. How a French champ hurdle winner struggled last time in an ordinary handicap was a true piece of Oscar worthy acting.

Went to preview night at Newcastle racecourse last night, the panel start on the supreme novice. The guy in charge says he fancies Yorkhill and asks Graham Wylie which race it goes to, the Supreme or the Neptune? His response ... "no idea, Willie will tell me on monday"

On a similar note, and one I thought a bit odd considering the so called transparency in racing.

When I went to see Champagne at Kempton last week, with the owners. I was speaking to Tom George and asked him if his JP horse was going to win. He said he wouldn't know until he gets into the paddock. Barry will already know f its off, but he wouldn't know until then. He said he felt the horse was ready to win.

We watched the race together and I asked if it was off. He said that if Barry were to jump off in first two, it could win, based on run style. When in the paddock the instructions were to ride him from mid pack and win by as short a distance as possible. Ended up beaten about 2 lengths, and turned out the difference in instructions was the difference in winning.

The point being in a game where a young apprentice can get 20 days for making a judgement error or following a trainers instruction to dob out round the back, and yet JP can effectively tell his trainers to wait for another day, and its fairly common knowledge, seems a rum old game to me.
