prisoners are given unescorted leave all the time in the run up to there release 99% of them dont abuse this as it will hurt there release

This bloke is serving life for murder though.

He is. However I don't think he has a whole life sentence, so he has to serve a minimum number of years before being released on licence, which is normally around the 20-25 year mark. I get the impression that as he was convicted in 1991 he is up for parole very soon so gets these unescorted leave privileges to get used to being integrated back into society.
