Setting the line at January 4 before I see '2017 gonna be just like 2016'

People love the drama, all want to be the one that breaks the news on social media.

People just don't get the fact that there are thousands more celebrities than there ever was before, and this is increasing year on year. Look how many well-known musicians/bands there were when the Beatles started-hardly any. Since then the music industry has exploded creating hundreds more celebrities who aren't dead yet. And now of course we have the wonderful situation where people are well-known for doing nothing. With the age of social media creating celebs exponentially. People like the wealdstone raider, for example, are now celebrities!

Can you even begin to imagine the noise that will be made when one of the Kardashans (sp?) passes on?

Thery seem to be featured everywhere, but I have no idea what they actually do.

Kim K made a sex tape which was "leaked" and span up from there. She used to be a stylist for Paris Hilton and a few other celebrities. Her father achieved some noteriety for defending OJ Simpson  Her mother approached a production company to do a "The Osbournes" style tv show which gathered some momentum pretty quickly and things went from there. Marrying Kanye West definitely helped too. Its quite an impressive exercise in media management and marketing tbh.

Depressingly I think you are wrong about the noise when they pass away. I think they will have been forgotten. Paris who springs to mind.

Blue line is Kim, Red is Paris on google trends. which shows how often each term is searched for relating to a total volume. I don't think it will take them, that long to fade into obscurity, particularly when they stop trying.

As an aside Kim K was searched for more than Donald Trump in September 2016! If it wasn't for the election week itself where Trump is off the charts, she would be pretty much tied.

Well Paris Hilton falls into the same catgory afaic, I'm only aware of some sex tapes that involved her, & of her extreme wealth.

I was actually au-fait with the one who was on the O J Simpson Defence team - Robert - & he (or the actor playing him) also featured prominently in the recent OJ Simpson TV series which starred John Travolta.

I suppose Bernie Ecceleston's daughters might just fall into the same category - famous only for their inherited wealth & lavish spending. There are actually 3 Ecclestone daughters, Tamara, Petra - she's a real dish - & Deborah, but the last-named sort of flies unfer the radar, & is in fact old enough to be the mother of Tamara & Petra.

I wonder where Kim got the idea Tongue

Isn't it the same as someone like Tara Palmer Tomkinson/Katie Price esque. Can you think of a male famous for being attractive? I know attractive people tend to do better in all walks of life because of how our minds work, but I can't think of many socialite men. Perhaps you could argue the reality stars but there is a bit of circular reasoning going on once we get to that point. Google didn't return too much. Dan Blizerian might be as close as it gets lol.

We're agreed that the internet has misunderstood the reasons for there being more celebrity deaths, but I think we are in danger of replacing one myth with another. To say there were virtually no celebs in the 50s/60s is madness. Of course the number now is a multiple of then, but there already were a vast numbers of celebs back then.

And is the personalisation new? I can remember my parents being saddened by celebrity deaths. Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly come to mind.

the difference is the proliferation of media outlets

social media
hundreds of tv channels
print media
forums
mobile, tablets

all allow people to express their "grief" publically whereas when a major celebrity dies in the 50s-60s all they can do is talk about it with friends and family face to face

It's a similar thing with poppies now.

People (or at least "celebrities") are expected to be seen to be wearing one.

If they don't there will be some sort of moral outrage.

It's all bullshit. Either wear a poppy or don't. I don't give a shit and nor should anyone else.

Oh and on that note:

FIFA (despite all their other faults) were right to warn and then fine the home countries about wearing poppies

Why ?

Its not a political statement.. its a sign of remembrance and respect.. A nod to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can all continue our privileged existence

Is it though? Or are you just so sheepish to see it for what it is.

Please share a NON-POLITICAL unpopular opinion that you hold.

eg Breaking Bad is massively over-rated and you don't see the fuss

eg Mrs Browns Boys is the best comedy on television, now or will ever be

over to you

Worms placed back in can.  Lid closed.

Pls note that thinking Mrs Browns Boys is funny is the controversial one. Wink

"Its not a political statement.. its a sign of remembrance and respect"

so symbols honouring the military forces of a country are both non-political and appropriate for a football match?

are all symbols of honouring military forces ok, or just ones that are for our boys?

are eg russian symbols supporting their men in the annexation of crimea ok? how about isreali symbols honouring men defending the occupied settlements of palestine?

i've never worn a poppy, i dont like what it represents.

But then I suppose we could counter this argument by asking who gives a shit about your opinion.
