Much is made of the Fischer game, but this one, in 1978, between Karpov (nearest) and Korchnoi is arguably more interesting.

Korchnoi had defected from the USSR and the Soviet machine was furious that it had lost the world title 6 years earlier in Iceland.

As an aside, I've always though it must have been wonderful to grow up in California in the 70's.
