Am I damaging what little poker ability I might have thought I have?

Since the start of the year, I have not been able to do much, so most of my time is taken up on the xbox, reading and online poker.

Under normal circumstances I would play as a recreational 4 to 5 nights a week, online MTT between $20 - $55 ranges and if playing live, £100 - £300 range.

I do not play cash (very rarely).

This whole year i have just played the micro stakes max stake buy in $11 minimum $2, (average $5) my game feels that it has stagnated – on average I will load up with $100 play 150 mtts, then load up the following month with the same amount.

When previously playing at my normal stakes I made a few final tables cashed out some 4 figure wins on the live side played about 20 tournaments 1 final table and 5 in the money cashes.

My question is that by dropping down to the micros is it damaging my game or am as is probably the case just at my brick wall as a player anyway or has variance just decided to be my enemy for a while.

I ask this because I am seriously cogitating (keep in mind I am an oldie) of taking the road to dedicating 2018 to purely playing poker back at my previous buy in levels or perhaps I am just delusional.

Is it one Tournament you play at a time? Or Several?

And you play for fun right? If so, play whatever you enjoy and that is affordable to you.

No one can really answer your questions apart from yourself. I read your post about poker training programmes, HUDS etc, if this kind of thing annoys you, play on a site where 3rd party software is banned eg Unibet or Sky.

If you are playing a $5 average buy in then losing $100 for 5 months in a row is only 100 games downswing. If you are playing large field then I think this is very likely to happen whether you are good or not because if you don't get to any final tables and even then the top 4 or so places, it is a hard proposition to make much money.

It sounds like you are a bit too worried about it, so the variance of 500+ player fields is probably not for you. Try the 180 man sngs maybe? Alternatively, if this is just for fun then play the stakes that are going to get you excited and looking forward to playing, so that you will play your A game.

Pvas n1 on the SM Smiley

Mikey seriously don't play online poker with expectation of long term profit theres just no point. Play fun games for stakes that are exciting and don't hurt.

Lot of work needed to grind out profit on the internet's and if you're already comfortable thrn what's the point. If you're already at a high level then it's worth but having to get there first is just, imo, a total waste of time.

Thanks for the feedback:

Variance – having made money and lost money (and when I say lost I mean everything including my houses) on more than several occasions I am well attuned with variance and it has little to no effect on me as I know that there will always be another opportunity around the corner.

Tilt – I just don’t tilt (occasionally I might get angry with somebody or something) but it only lasts for a minute or two:

Example: whenever we change our vehicles I can guarantee that within the week my Mrs will have dinked them (hitting the gatepost normally) when she tells me I just smile because over 30 years I know it’s going to happen.

6 months ago I went to the see my GP on my Mrs insistence because I had a pain in my side. They  sent me for an X-ray I had left the hospital and was getting into my car only to find the radiologist had followed me and asked me to come back so he could take some more.

That afternoon my GP called and asked if I could come in straight away, turns out I had a rare growth. I jokingly said to the GP well at least I have time to sort out my affairs – she then said it was really serious and I might only have a couple of weeks.

What did I do after the news – I went home cried for 3 minutes – accessed my life and thought well with all its ups and downs (variance) it’s been damn good. I then sat down with my Mrs – wrote letters to my family to be opened when I was gone and then sorted out my affairs.

No tilt – the following day the GP rang to say that a specialist surgeon had seen the x-rays and could I go to Birmingham to see him. He said we don’t know what is inside because it’s rare but let’s have a crack at getting it out. Week later I am booked in for the surgery as I am been pushed down to theatre the surgeon said until we get you open I don’t know what will happen. 12 hours of surgery – half a lung gone – 3 days later back home.

The last few months has been about managing the pain and adapting to the fact I will never be back to how I was – I have and will adapt to do something else as it turns out they managed to remove the alien inside and my life expectancy has returned to normal.

Patience – in my military days I spent 4 days on a roof in 2ft of snow knowing that I could not get of that roof until the job was completed – no fags – no hot food.

So in theory I have dealt with variance and tilt and I am a very patient person – thus good qualities for playing poker.

The reason I have dropped down to playing the micros is that the monthly allowance that my Mrs gives me is now small because I am not able to work for the foreseeable future.

Hence why I wondered if by dropping down to the micros stakes would make my game worse (playing for six hours with 6k players finishing 10th and getting $8.80 is never going to be profitable but I have to play only online at the moment due to the drugs and driving.

SuuPRlim – do you only play live – and if you played the internet previously what took you away from it.

That's a very honest and revealing post Mr Mike. Good luck to you and please keep us up to date with your progress.

SuuPRlim – do you only play live – and if you played the internet previously what took you away from it.

I used to make a living playing online poker, I quit because of a mixture of 1) no longer really enjoying it and 2) not really being able to win anymore, the reason is obviously majority #2 because had I been still able to win I would probably find myself able to enjoy myself more.

I wrote before quite a few times about what's damaged online poker so won't repeat but basically a BR and skill set in 2014 that could make $100k  a yr will do well to make $20k in 2017, it's not a complaint, people have gotten really really good, and put in a huge amount of work, thinking about the game in new and creative ways. Rake's on the up, recreational money on the down and the very best players are still making plenty, so if you're not playing at a high level already, or don't have a bankroll (or access to a bankroll) where you can very strictly game select high stakes then really you actually have no real chance of making money.

Just play the comps you find fun and can afford, sounds like you're looking for something to just get the blood pumping a bit whilst you're not able to be too active - don't play for expectation of profit, and I don't mean that disparagingly, genuinely if someone said to me what price would you back yourself to make $75k at online poker in 2018 with a decent volume stipulation I think i'd need long, long odds - I cant think exactly  what price I am but I think I'm a substantial under-dog, and in theory with my background I should be better placed than most people to be able to do that.

Not only that but the amount of work that would be needed for that $75k would equate to a terrible hourly rate. IF you're looking to have a gamble and fun get stuck in, if you're looking to grind out a profit then seriously, don't.
