My Dad used to work there and in Libya, Iraq and Saudi.
He said it is a really nice place. It is far more western than many places in the Middle East are.
French is spoken widely as it used to belong to them. Arabic is the principle language though.
From what my Dad says, it is really beuitiful. I am sure you will love it.

I went to Hammermet, it is a beautiful place with a glorious beach. However 3 girls on a holiday there need to be very careful. I was offered six camels for my girlfriend at the time AND HE WAS SERIOUS in hindsight she was a bit over priced in my opinion!! If I thought I could get one on the plane it would have been a good talking point in the pub with my mates but alas.............

Where in Tunisia are you going? If it's Port El Kantoui (sp?) the marina area is fine at night, just get taxis there and back. There's also a casino near there.

Went to hammemat last year.. the locals are really friendly, tempting you into their shops with "cheap as chips", and "thats asda price".. great for a giggle! Loadsa beautiful ceramic bits to buy too. Make sure you go smoke shisha in a cafe.. apple or grape is the best.. I enjoyed tunisia.. hope you do too!

Ive never been to tunisia but my mum has. she has red hair and did not like it one bit. people kept appraoching her and touching her hair. someone attempted to pick pocket her in a market too. she liked the local people but open public places were a bit challenging. ive been to morrocco and have heard its a bit like that. one piece of advice is to respect the countrys religion and dont go topless sunbathing in public (might be ok at your htel??) dont go out alone and dont carry too much money during the day with you. the best way to get into your holiday is to do what the locals do. youve had some tips already about the tabac etc. have a wonderful time and it will be good to find out if you enjoyed it
