In Play Betting on the horses

Does anyone do backing and laying in play on the horses?  I was giving it a go yesterday and apart from 1 mistake I made, it went quite well and I ended up up overall

I do myself Graham, I prefer to lay the horses in running, the amount of times you mention a horse to be travelling well and it doesn't even get placed.

I backed the horses before the race and layed them off during.   If an odds on favourite drops out to really good odds (say from 2.0ish to 6.0) early on, I'll try and back it in race then set up a lay straight away back at the 2.0 ish.

I was messing yesterday and my stakes were only backing at £5 and I have a hedge spreadsheet (I can mail you a copy if you want - pm me) that tells you what you need to lay at to make a profit - it was green all over yesterday.  I ended up only £3.50 but I lost £5 at one point so I could have been up about £10 if I hadn't had made that mistake.  Didn't want to risk more as I am very new at it and don't really know what I am doing.

Going to try it today too.  I like it because the result of the race doesn't matter, you just need to see green all over which is pretty easy to do (even if I do get nervous!)

I was very happy to have a 'system' that worked for me.  I don't want to get £1000's in one go (well, clearly I do) because that will involve risking a lot but for a few pounds risk, I can get back a few pounds.

My £3.50 was all in about 45 minutes too, I only thought of having a go at about 3:30pm so if I get on from the first race today, I could make a few more pounds hopefully

I often bet in running.

My best chance recently came at the end of the Irish race where the leader pulled up before the line. I was watching the second horse closing and saw E6 available at around 9:1. It was after I submitted the bet and was waiting to confirm, when the leader pulled up. Someone must have thought the race was over and laid my horse, because a screen suddenly popped up from betfair warning me the odds were greater than 99:1 (First time I'd seen this warning.) By the time I'd read it and removed it (2 secs) and then confirmed the bet (1 sec) it came back as unmatched at 6000+:1, which must have been on offer, but taken by someone else moments before me.

going well so far.  Total profit for the day is £21.77 at the moment.

I made two mistakes - one was trying two horses in the same race and it didn't work for me as I couldn't work out the laying odds quick enough

The other was looking on the BF forum and seeing a post called The System with a horse in it and I didnt realise until it was too late it was a laying system - it was never going to improve and I lost my £5.

I like to lay a horse that needs holding up especially on the AW. I will then put up to back it as soon as the gates open.

99% of the time i get fish who are trying to nick a few quid based on the selections poor start.

The trouble for me is that I know nothing about the horses I'm picking, I'm just picking favourites to mid price horses and waiting for the odds to change - what the horse is like I have no idea, it's all about the change in price that I'm watching.

I would quite like to be able to see the races though, I'm just hitting refresh like mad and waiting - it would be good to have an idea on the length of each race - I just layed off a horse at 17.5 (for a profit) when I could have laid it down at 6.0 if I could see what was going on, but I get nervous about losing because I have to do two more races to cover any losses at the moment.

Going well though, profit so far £20.32 ( I didn't manage to lay one off - again a mistake on my behalf - I diverted from my 'system' again)

So let me get this straight - you have no idea whether the race is a 5f sprint or a 2m marathon? you have no idea at what stage the race is at when you are making or laying your bets? You have no idea of the form of the horses or how they normally run?

i just hope you dont lose your connection at the wrong time!!

surely there are easier ways to make a few quid and ones where you actually get to watch what is going on as well!!

It's not as bad as that Matt.  I know how long the race is in distance, it says so on the site.  What I can't see is exactly what's happening in real time - I can only go by the odds.  I know roughly how long the race will last but not exactly as I can't see it.  I'm laying off the bets as early as possible for a small profit.

The form, jockey, going etc are all irrelevant.  What I am doing is betting on the odds, not the horse.  The odds change pre race to suit the conditions, horse, jockey etc, that's all done for me.  I go for a favourite, or close odds to be in with a shout.  As the race is in progress the horses change places all the time and the odds change to reflect this.  This is when you jump in and lay the horse you just backed.

For example

Horse 1 is favourite at the off at 3.60.  I back this for £10.  In running, it takes the lead and the odds will drop to show, I lay it at say 2.0 for 18.00 - a guaranteed profit of £8.

This happens all the time, every race it can be done.  The only times I lost today were when I got gready and a) tried to do more than 1 horse per race and I couldn't get the lay odds worked out quick enough and therefore missed the slot,  b) when I made a mistake of misreading a post in the BF forum and c) when the nag just didn't do anything.  From now on, it's 1 horse per race and ignore what's happening with the BF forum.

It's not really the race you are betting on, it's a change in the odds.
