See here is the thing. I once knew a guy who played the bagpipes in a scottish pipe band.  I asked that exact question " will you not end up deaf playing those things".  He replied  " no, of course not laddy....the sound is directed out the way".


   It was my  .  I didn't understand how that would protect his ears.  He had pretty sharp hearing, so it must be ok.
