Golf Clubs - A new driver
«
on:
February 27, 2006, 07:42:47 PM »
Hi,
i'm in need of a new driver, my R580 developed a rattle some time ago but kept plaing okay. I went to the range for the first time in a while last week and the rattle has gotten worse and it doesnt seem to be hitting as far.... I'm looking for any recomendation on a new driver.
It took me about 12 months to get fully comfortable with the R580 (have been looking at the R7 - is it similar?), but was well worth it when I did. I like to be long off the tee but also need to keep some form of control! I play off (or do when I play more than one a quarter) about 14. Any suggestions?
Cheers

I bought it off ebay about 18month/2 years ago - i can't imagine they'd be willing to do that.... would they?!
Plus I'm greedy and think the newer clubs must be able to give be 10-20 more yards....

It's all in your mind Rooky.
Any decent Driver will do the job, it's the player that has the timing, & thats what matters. Mind you, I play golf worsed than I pasy poker, so prob best to ignore me.

It is all in the mind, thats why its a good game...
but if i hit the ball with one 'average' club, then have the same swing again (i wish!) with a better club it will go further.....

unfortunately its all not in the mind tikay, average golfers are now driving 280+ now, sales in irons have plummeted, while driver sales and wedge sales are up

Thanks Dave, if you wouldn't mind asking him if he's heard of R580's sounding like a bit of the club head has broken off inside and rattlling... and if it tends to then mean a new club or an expensive repair job i'd be grateful....
i've pretty much accepted that its a new club job... i can't imagaine how they'd get inside to get the bit out... and surely it must affect the club.. otherwise that bit wouldnt of been in there!!!
Yeah i agree bradley... a lot of courses seem to be struggling with the technology making them play so short...handicaps will continue to fall for us average golfers on the courses that need less course management.

rooky, if you have given up on the club then send it back to the manafacturer, even if it fails it will only cost you a few quid post and packaging, it may take a few months but i think you will be surprised

For what its worth, I absolutely love my R580.
I tried out the new R7 for a round (friendly pro-shop), and couldnt hit a fairway.

I love my R580 too - cant beat TaylorMade stuff
I'd get it repaired if I were you. The R7's are expensive but decent bits of kit too, but remember the saying

I have a Taylor made 560XL which I got last year. It's the best driver I've ever had.
I bought it from golfbidder.com which may sound like an auction site but it isn't really.
I can thoroughly recommend their service though, and there are literally thousands of golf clubs there.
They seem to sell all the second-hand clubs that are traded in, and when I got my driver it looked new but was well below retail.

OK, not ALL in the mind, but mostly so imo.
The argument you suggest re Irons & drivers is not relevant - a Driver IS for length, & is always gonna be longer than any Iron.
But these days they sell "Premium" balls - go further, spin better, bounce softer. It's all nonsense. Clubs ditto. A sesson with the Pro is cheaper & more likely to give you extra length or accuracy. IMO.......

it's very subjective Tikay, but I am very fussy about which golf balls I use as I am sure is Junior.
But it is possibly only 10% of all golfers who care this much.
