After knocking an opponent out of an stt. I gave the customary ul . Following this comment i recieved several comments on how i could be a little more compansionate etc. So it got me thinking do people read the abbreviations different. My opinion on ul was unlucky but others percieved it to be you lose just wondering what you guys thought of it . TY

I suppose it could be misunderstood for something like that. I always find a gg helps in these situations.

I've never interpreted as 'you lose'.

You could always add  "I'm crying too if that makes you feel better"

After seeing a guy win a hand (in which I wasnt involved) slowplaying a straight, having hit it on the flop, I typed in 'WP'.
He came back with 'what the f*** Huh?'
I said 'wp  =  well played mate !'
He said 'oh sorry, thought you were calling me a w**ky pr1ck !'
 Cheesy Cheesy
Very strange, yet amusing to all.
I think it comes down to peoples frames of mind sometimes as to what they interprete the jargon as. Or they're just hill-billies.

have to admit that i dont say anything unless i actually know the person who has just exited from the tourney or if the person who has just exited says something to me first like "nh" or similar.

You will never ever see me say the following two phrases as i hate it when other people say it to me:

"sorry" - no your not, your aim of putting all your chips in the pot was to win the contents of the pot regardless of how you do it. You have achieved your objective and you are not sorry about it.....

"gg" - you've just seen someone spike a one outer on me on the river whilst only 2 places away from making the money, please explain in what way this is "good"......

or maybe its just because monkeys are just heartless creatures!!  Cheesy

When i first started online i thought UL meant you loser!!
I do type in GG or UL myself now not because of the literal meaning, more as a sentiment.

gfy is one that always got me into trouble...

To me, it's always meant 'good for you'. Apparently there's another meaning.

===

As for when to apply these epithets, I sometimes find 'nh and gg' particularly hollow - 'nh' in particular is extremely overused. I've even seen people who aren't even in the pot say 'nhs' when AA and KK comes out on the bubble - which if you're the one losing, is not a nice hand at all.

'gg' is also overused - to me it sounds particularly ironic if you've been playing badly and gone out early, for a whole bunch of people to start telling you what a good game it is... now that you're not in it any more.

I generally reserve 'nh' for quads or better, or sometimes for when I've made a bad call against someone who has a better hand than I gave them credit for. I reserve 'gg' for final tables, if at all... unless someone I've just knocked out says it to me first, in which case I might say it back out of politeness.

In getting knocked out - if I wish to be magnanimous - I generally wish the remaining competitors good luck (gl) which is my waying of signing off, and is to my mind the most unambiguous of these sayings.

Or I might just say nothing at all - usually because I have to rush off somewhere and scream at the walls. Please don't take it personally if that's the case...  Wink
