Having just received Luton's offical programme for it's UK Open (Mon 8th Aug to Sun 14th Aug) I was interested to see that all competitions are freezeouts and that there are no rebuy comps.

Is this the first time that a British festival has been totally scheduled with just freezeout competitions and if so is it a sign of the future. I personally prefer freezeout comps but wonder what the wealthy rebuy merchants think.

Luton is responding to demand.

At the last festival the early week rebuy tournaments had approximately 62 and 64 runners against 140 capacity. All the freezouts had over 100 runners and two were sell outs

Several long term regulars made representations to the card room that they did not play the rebuy tourneys because they felt they were not competing on a level playing field.

In addition a festival costs money to put on...extra staff, absence of restaurant etc...if only 65 are turning up then the loss in revenue is keenly felt, not least because there are fewer punters to drop some money on the magic roundabout etc

The result is the programme you see for August

As to the level playing field point, I can see it both ways

Yes if I turn up for a 200 rebuy with one add on and a rebuy in reserve then I am going to have to be "conservative" whereas a sponsored pro/gambler/maniac/wealthy player can afford to have a go at hitting a draw etc. Or maybe I won't be "conservative"l and give it a spin early

However if I do hit some hands and the sponsored one/maniac etc is made to pay to hit a draw and misses for example, I'm more likely to be be paid, the prize pool is inflated etc

All I am saying is that it is not a black and white issue. It's a debate we've had here before and no doubt will have again

For the moment, freezeouts are where it's at!

Wed 10 Aug Nott vs Lut H/U Challenge 5pm

Fri 12 Aug 300+25 NLH Shootout 8pm

As mentioned above, all are freezouts

All are two day events except the Friday and Sunday comps

Important, the Friday 300 shootout IS LIMITED TO 100 RUNNERS (10 tables of 10) If you want to be in this, I'd advise entering early

Also there is online qualification tounreys for the main event on bluesquare. Don't have the details of this

Do you know if Luton take cheques in advance?  Or do I have to nip down with the cash?

hmmm, a difficult one. Certainly pre-register for the shootout

the rest...I would guess you'd be ok on the day but really it's only a guess based off past experience. If you would be disappointed to be turned away, pre-register

hotels, plenty. Luton a vertiable feast of 5 star establishments

*cough*

*splutter*

two of the better ones (not the cheapest)

Leaside Hotel 01582 417463
Chiltern Hotel 01582 575911

Added advantage of the Chiltern, it's where the visiting dealers get put up. Apparently its good for NLH games at the end of their shift!

is the PLO a freezeout?

if so and i am on the road again i might make my first trip to luton

i also fancy the 2 day 750 with the double shootout 1 day event on the 2nd day

very intresting to see a good schedule of freezeouts and reasonable price

i would have like to have seen maybe 1 other non holdem event

just to add a bit of spice but this should apeal to the hold em players of all pockets
