This is a hand from a home (cash) game last night. It's really loose end of the night bussiness, hence the rather questionable pre-flop call. It's the post flop play I'm interestered to hear what people think about. The reason I ask is that I got a (reasonably friendly) rub down for my post flop play.

4 handed, blinds = 10p/20p

I'm in the small blind with 52o

UTG raises to 70p

Button calls

I call  Grin

Big blind calls.

Flop comes 34Q, Rainbow.

Check, Check, initial raiser bets  £2.50 (into a £2.80 pot)

I'm the only caller.

turn is (second diamond to hit).

He bets £3.50 (into a £7.80 pot)

I call.

River is (third diamond)

I bet £10 (I don't put him on the flush for obviouse reasons)

He dwells for ages, then calls.

I show the str8, he shows 2 pair.

I don't really know how to play draws. I played it very basically and was going to fold the hand if I missed. Was my play of this draw acceptable? I don't think that the turn call can be critisised (?) given it was pretty small in comparison to the pot. Should I have been calling the flop?

Calling here is a bad move. You are risking a pot size bet on a 1 in 5 chance of hitting your straight on the turn. And another 1 in 5 on the river makes about 1 in 3 overall. Here's how I would play it:

If I thought he would fold to a large raise, I would raise at least twice what he bet. But if I thought he would call if I raised, then I would fold. The theory is, that even if he calls I still have a chance of winning but I really want him to fold.

I think the call on the flop is fine in cash game if things aren't likely to lock-up on future streets. Towards the end of the sesh in a home game this is very rarely the case.

You've just over 2-1, but implied odds a plenty, especially if ace rather than 6 hits. I think you can justify a 5-1 shot here.

Just a shame the  didn't hit on the turn rather than the river so you could have stacked off.

Good value bet on the end.

The very last hand of the night goes to Dewi James, who finds ACES and talks Raymond O’Mahoney into calling his all-in preflop bet of 15k.  “If I had AQ, I’d call!” says Dewi.  Raymond calls holding pocket 66’s.
