So, if G4L is the charity, what is P4C?

Poker4Charity is a campaign of the registered charity Game for Life.

In the early days we set up Poker4Charity. Then we decided to go down the route of charity registration. We tried to register the charity as Poker4Charity, however the Charity Commission said this was a definite no, no. Their reasoning was that the name would promote poker more than the charitable works. Hence, the name Game for Life was chosen as the name for the charity.

Having built up the profile of Poker4Charity it was decided to maintain it as a campaign of the main charity owned by Game for Life’s wholly owned trading company Game for Life Enterprises Ltd. Other campaigns are being added to Game for Life’s portfolio including ClayShooting4Charity and Golfing4Charity.

Hope that explains

Is Game for Life Enterprises LTD a charity, or is that a seperate company?

Thats right G4L is a charity and P4C is not a charity it is just part of G4L.

Game for Life Enterprises Ltd is NOT a charity. It is a company wholly owned by the charity. This is because a charity cannot trade. ie we could not sell our baseball caps, shirts etc., or hire out the poker tables, or sell advertising through the charity. For this reason most charities have a trading company that awards its profits to the owning charity.

A prime example of this is Oxfam. If you go into one of their high street shops and wanted to make a donation to their famine appeal and purchase some of their excellent free trade hot chocolate the money cannot be taken as one. Instead the assistant will call a manager who will take the donation from you and give you a receipt from Oxfam 'the charity' whilst the assistant will ring the hot chocolate through the till and give you a receipt from Oxfam's trading company. This is because the shops are not operated by the charity but their trading company.

It's just a legal thing that gets around charities not being able to trade.

Most of the trading companies are called [Charity Name] Trading Ltd or [Charity Name] Enterprises Ltd
