What does everyone play in cash games?

What is the deciding factor?

I only play No Limit Holdem in cash games as i believe this to be my best game.  You don't tend to get many pot limit cash games live and the ones on the net are few and far between as no limit is obviously the most popular.  Limit cash for me is an absolute NO NO! - i would rather systematically remove my own toe nails with a pair of pliers than play limit.  It is boring, it is invariably a game of best hand wins and it frustates the shit out of me.  However if a total beginner it is the best game to learn and to play from the off before progressing to pot limit and no limit.  The biggest consideration when selecting a cash game must surely be the table you have - if you know it to be full of poorer players than yourself then go ahead and sit down but if you can see one or two good players that you know will be difficult to beat then go for another game - it is nice to pit your whits against a better or successful player but really what you want is a game you can beat and if that means playing against novices then so be it. - gl

I've long been of the opinion that a skilfull player can make more money playing Limit Poker, especially Limit O8. Its probably true that bad players will go broke quicker in NL and PL games and then the games become no flop unless two big hands are dealt which is infinitely more boring. Its also easier to maintain your bankroll. (Probably 'cos I suck at PL and NL)  Cheesy

Cash games in UK casinos are Pot limit

I myself play small stakes limit cash online and regular PL cash live

I shy away from NL cash online because I prefer to (if it comes to it) do my money slowly rather than be outmuscled and having to guess for my  I sat down with and then having to pull up to get it back if I'm wrong. Maybe I'm a bit timid.

I enjoy limit cash online....at small stakes your big hands get paid off I find by people calling you down ther streets with second/third pair, A rag etc. The key is starting hand discipline so you are not hitting parts of flops and being compelled to see a hand through when you don't really want to.

I agree that Limit can be a dull and frustrating affair. However, I can see the skill factor involved. Due to the betting limitations, the game becomes much more mathematical and less reliant on reads, bluffing, etc. Personally, I say stuff the maths! Give me the buzz of bluff any day.  Cheesy

My only experience of cash games has been the 25PL at Star City (I don't play Omaha). I've only played in it 3 times and didn't enjoy it despite being ahead (I keep records). I won't play in that game again. The main reason for this is the blind structure. There's no big blind...both blinds are 1 which, to my mind, creates a 'bingo like' situation where 8 out of 10 players call preflop so it's not really my cup of tea. I'm just not comfortable when having to guess who's got what EVERY.

If I had deeper pockets then I might consider it but I'd much prefer it to be NO LIMIT then if someone wants to call a raise of 24 'just because they have 42os in their hand' (yes this happened!..no names) then let it be potentially for their whole stack and if they call my all in and outdraw me fair do's...

Having said that, my best tourn results have been in PL so the crux of the matter for me is the lack of a BB.

If anyone knows why they don't have a BB then I'd like to hear about it...esp when people can introduce a BB by 'betting blind'.....

Cheers.

I've started to play more Limit online these days as it's such easy money, but it is very boring at times.  I only ever play No Limit tournaments on and off line.

Pot limit I just cannot get into.

BrumBilly, what is Star City like for poker.  Last time I went there was nothing on, do they have a regular schedule?

thursdays 10
Fridays 20
Not very good at all, loads of peeps have been once or twice and won't go again.
Ante structure gets steep too quickly and the overall standard of play is terrible, should be renamed badbeat city.

Many players including Devilfish any too many top American pro's to mention consider limit-holdem the MOST skillfull discipline.

According to those experts no-limit is third and pot-limit somewhere in between.

It may not be to everyone's taste, but limit is universally accepted as the most demanding.

Just to add to add something about Star City....the antes DO go up too quickly and Wed is to be avoided if u've got to travel any distance (I'm local so cycle Smiley . Thursday night has fewer runners and a marked reduction in the ten quid rebuy merchants...

For my money, the Broadway takes some beating though I've only been 3 times and NEVER finished in the money.

There are currently satellites being played for the big comp at Star City this Autumn 100k guarenteed to the winner. Will post details later in the week if anyone's interested as I haven't got a flyer to hand.

i think the satellites at star city are a 10 rebuy to go through to the next round which is then a 100 rebuy to go through to the final which is a 1000 buy in. i think the satellites are a saturday for the 10 then if you go through you then play on the sunday. the grand final i think is in september. personally i do not recommend it. i played in the 10 rebuy on a saturday because i was up there. there was 10 runners you had 2 hour re buys and 1000 starting chips with the blinds starting at 50/100.
