Title: Aussie Open Tennis 2010
Post by: Blatch on January 15, 2010, 10:22:29 AM
Hopefully I can have as good a year as I did last year.  I doubt ill be able to pick out the two winners again but shall give it a go for you.

Mens

This year in the Mens has to be the most exciting of many a year.  Speaking to different people and everyone is tipping someone different.  I guess the winner has to come from Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Davydenko or Del Potro but some people are throwing in Tsonga and Soderling as well.  First of all I think we can cross of Tsonga, Davydenko and Soderling from the list.  Tsonga just isnt anywhere near consistent enough; Davydenko has been superb recently but wasnt really that unexpected on the courts were his recent run has come from.  The Aussie courts are slightly quicker than the hard courts that the World Champs and Dubai event were held on and therefore he cant simply base camp on the base line and counter punch.  The ball also takes more spin in Oz and will be bouncing up above his waist height more therefore making the balll harder to control for him.  Add to the fact he has never won a major and its another major hurdle he has to over come.  Soderling has been the major improver on tour last year and maybe one to watch but I just cant see him coming through.  So the contenders: -

Federer - Without doubt has to be there.  Always done well here and although he hasnt quite always done the business here he has to be the major contender again.

Rafa - One or two question marks about him recently.  Is his overall game had too much taken off it without niggling injuries and constant pressure that the top of the game causes.

Murray - Will he ever be able to hanlde the heat here and more importantly the pace of the courts.  Murray is very much like Davydenko that there is a specific speed of surface where he seems to have an edge on everyone but the aussie open just arent his type of courts.  Too many average results in the past here and nothing really seems to have changed with him recently.

Del Potro - This kid has the lot and also has the monkey off his back now he has won a major and also beat Federer to accomplish this.  Has experience to call upon and could be a major player.

The draw puts Federer in the same quarter as Davydenko and Verdasco but cant see Federer not making the semis.

Djokovic has to get through Soderling and Tsonga to meet Federer in the semis.

The other half looks rather juicy - Roddick, Gonzalez, Clilic, Del Potro, Murray, Monfils and Nadal.

That looks like a lot of tough games for whoever makes it and I cant see whoever making it having much left for the final.  My guess would be a Nadal vs Roddick semi with the winner losing in the final.

Im going to back Federer @ 3/1 for 4 points and Del Potro @ 7/1 for 1.5 points

Womens

Again this yer looks be a very good one and there are some great prices out there.  We have the return of both Belgium girls and the best news ever, both Williams in the same half of the draw.  I really want to take on Serena here but she has such an easy draw its untrue.  Her toughest potential games on route to the Semis are against Sam Stosur, Azarenka or Zvonereva all of which she should walk through.

The 2nd quarter has Venus in and although she isnt playing well there is only Wozniacki in this section that should trouble her.  This draw really is weak and kind of takes the mick when you see the bottom half but sadly thats where all my value picks are.

Elena Dementieva is one I always look out for on a hard court as she is always there or there abouts and now that she doesnt have the Worlds worst serve could be a suprise to some at 20/1.  Sadly the draw hasnt been kind to her and she may have to play Henin in the 2nd round.  If she gets through that then I would expect her to have a long run until she meets Clijsters.  KIm has kept a bit quiet on just how seriously she is taking this big come back but after her last win she has to be a major contender for it and I think the winner of her and Dementieva will reach the final here.

The bottom section sees Safina who has almost fallen off the face of the Earth recently and only really has to beat Sharapova to get to the Semi's.

The prices arent anything special apart from Dementieva and we should get a good sweat with her.

Im laying Serena @ 3/1 for 3 points
Backing Dementieva @ 20/1 for 2 points
Backing Clijsters @ 4/1 for 3 Points

Gl all.

Had these bets so far:

Juan Martin Del Potro
      8.07      £46.98      £332.15

Jo Wilfried Tsonga    67.2    £30.00    £1,986.00

I think Tsonga can make the Semis.
Hes made the semis here before and i definetly think he has the game to beat Djokovic in the Quarters, hes excels in that match up. Hes been struggling with a wrist injury recently, but i think is in fine shape again now after some time off and was hitting the ball excellently in the Keeyong Exhibition tourn this week.
Im backing him with a view to trade in the semis.

I think Federer is a dodgy one, will have to get past Davydenjo to make the final and he cant succeed in that match up for toffee atm. He may fare better over 5, but a meeting with Del Potro or Nadal in the final would also be a huge hurdle for him to overcome.

I like Del Potro/Nadal/Tsonga for this tournament.

Blatch, how come youve backed Del Potro to win it but predict Roddick will beat him in the Quarters?

I too think Tsonga can make the semis. I don't think Nadal can win on his recent form so my semifinalists will be (based on my attempt to read the draw)

Federer
Tsonga
Murray
Del Potro

With probably a Del Potro v Federer final, Federer to win it.

Andy will be on when Clijsters has dispached her opponent losing approx 2-3 games in the process.

Id estimate he will be on court at 5.10am.

Im involved in the Karlovic v Stepanek match. Laid Stepa @ 1.2 when he won the first set, in a great position now @ 2-1 Karlovic, decent greens on both. Defo gona be difficult to resist the temptation to go all green on one player for a big win tho.

Obviously very early doors here but Rafa looks in a spot of bother here.

All depends if Luczak can keep his level up and he has shown glimses of the form in the past before.

not off to the best start at this years open, a mix of getting it wrong and falling asleep at the p.c didn't help.

-332 for the game.

Happy tho to have the week off work to trade even more.

she played well 2 weeks ago in her last comp, was unlucky to get beat by clijsters in the fianl. After having a few match points to win the game, can she win the oz open? I think she has a chance. Her biggest test will come in the 3rd or 4th(i think) when she comes up against clijsters again, she wins that, I think she can take it.

Should be an awesome game and im not suprised to see them go off even money.

Henin looks as if she hasnt been away from the court but she hasnt really been pushed apart from the Clijsters game and she may well crack under the pressure a little or find her shots wavering a bit.  I reallly cant pick a winner here but seeing as some bookies had Dementieva at 20/1 and some at 8/1 to win the comp I had to back her outright - she has a tough draw and if she wins it she will certainly deserve it.

Ana Ivanovic looks like sailing through to the 2nd round but ill be taking her on against her first decent opponent plus laying her in the outright.

She looks awful and her ball toss on her serve, which caused her drop down to 20 in the World last year, is still redic bad.  Anyone good will murder her.

The Verdesco game is heating up well but I wanted to see Mirza play Rezai but its just finished.  This Rezai girl could cause an upset or too - when she hits the ball it simply doesnt come back, over powered Serena for parts of the game a week back and at 500/1 could be a good fun sweat.

Blake v Clement
Gulbis v Monaco could a be a good match
Venus may struggle aginast Lucy Safarova

but the best one is late on Youzhny vs Gasquet could be a great trading game.

You just need to lay more than your stake.

If you lay £30 at 14's your P+L will read: -

Dementieva +120
Everyone else +0

If you lay her for 35 your P+L will read : -

Dementieva +50
Everyone else +5

You can obviously change this slightly either side for any figure you would like.

you never know with her, she didnt play the great again today.

Yeah was watching that, thought she'd fked it up, when had the chance to go 5-3 up, but played well.

UK UK!

She irrittates me so much watching her.

That stupid walk to the corner every time really tilts me and is pointless and probably a waste a energy too.

lol yeah true. Do we know potential opponents in the next?

Dinara Safina = gg

Was loving watching the Blake game and then had to switch over.  Both suffering from injuries as well but this Henin vs Dementieva was always gonna be good and worthy of a semi final really.

yeah definetly worthy of a semi.

I didnt watch tennis as much a few years ago when Henin was in her prime, shes brilliant! topspin backhand is mev.

That was my point really on backing Demi - knew it would be incredibly close between those two but with Dementieva at 20/1 and Henin at 5/1 it wasnt a tough choice - although would love to swap now :(

Last confirmed ChipRich sighting: At around 5am this morning our hero was seen depositing his net worth onto Stan James and banging it all on Benneteau to beat Karlovic. At around 7.45am Rich was seen going to bed with a massive smile on his face as "Benny" as he nicknamed him, took down the first set 6-1.

Karlovic has just won the next 3 sets with ease to take down the match 3-1. Expect tears when Rich awakens.

oh my god, the lads done it again.  he was last seen storming out the door after punting on Mayer @ 2.66 after he bagled super Juan Martin.  He wasnt even watching the game but was convinced Del Potro had a career threatening injury.  Unfortunately for our hero, Super Juan Martin dug deep and used his heart of a lion to break Mayer in the 3rd set and take it down, Florian is now trading @ 7.2 to back.

I just hope he can come thru this and isnt found in a ditch anytime soon.

less versatile than isner ? i thought isner was very poor apart from his big serve. Cilic has more to his game than just a big serve.

Cilic isnt really much like Isner at all. Isner is just a big serve and if the ball is in play will try and end the points asap by taking some shots on huge groundstrokes.

Cilic doesnt rely too heavily on his serve, his 1st serve percentage was poor today, he is all about the baseline rallies. He looks to attack but builds it up patiently. Hes good, hes not just a serve at all. Forehand and Backhand groundstrokes are his game.

Murray should win, but will be a very good match.

I asked Blatch this and he basically said no cos if Fed somehow loses you're screwed. You may as well just bet on Fed.

What I tried to explain to George was that Murray is Fave cos he is through.  If Federer beats Denko then he will go back fave but if Fed loses then Murray's price will shorten further. Therefore trading the Murray price between now and his semi is the same as backing / laying the Fed match.

I geniunely can't remember Federer every retiring from a match, I am sure it must have happened. He doesn't tend to be very injury prone though.

He also has made 22 consecutive grand slam semis, which is just a ridic record.

Federer is such a class act and different to anyone else ever.

1st set n a half against Davy and he made 29 unforced errors and Davy was 3/11 on break points.  Then after losing 1st set and being 1:3, 15:40 down he shanks a retrun and Davy misses a sitter at the net and then 20 mins later Fed has won every game since and now level at 1:1 in sets.  Has played amazingly well since and looks complete opposite to earlier.

Yeh load of shit. He's got to compete. Del Potro, Davy and Rafa have shown you can at least compete with Fed- even Roddick gave him a game!

Even if he is the 2nd best player on the planet (which he isn't) it sure matters when you retire with no slams in the cabinet

Totally agree. Murray has the game to beat Fed, he's just being too passive and not serving well enough. If he plays like he did when he beat Nadal we'd have a real match on our hands.

And Nadal's injury had nowt to do with anything. He was well beat and said so himself.

But the fact is he hasn't yet therefore not the second best in the world at this point in time.
