Title: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: tikay on September 13, 2006, 10:05:19 AM Our Live Update starts here at exactly (insert time, 'cos I've forgotten) this afternoon.
This is the first event of Season Three of the EPT, & the cream of European Poker will be here. Let's start off by nominating three players to make this week's Final Table. My picks are.... Thewy - he's back in form. Johnny Lodden - if he plays Marc Goodwin - another one bang in form. Lord Wernick - can't be ignored. What? Thats 4? I think not. It's three. I'm sure. Enjoy. I'm currently at Gatwick airport taking advantage of some of today's modern technology... oh no, hold on, it's actually my dodgy vodafone card which would have been laughed at half a century ago. Anyhow, I'm with Mr Raab and Jen, who is lying across two seats in a desperate attempt to get an extra hour of rest (her body clock failed to adjust in time and she only managed 1 hour of beauty sleep last night). It hasn't been a great start to the venture with first the tube being delayed (the phrase 'tin of sardines' springs to mind), and now the ruddy plane, which is a stunning 90 minutes late (Bah, humbug!). This therefore means that it's going to be a complete rush job, with two skinny bodies legging it down foreign roads... but don't fret, we still intend to be at Casino Barcelona in time for the start, which, incidentally, is scheduled to be at 5pm. So, sit tight and enjoy a day of blonde updates - we'll try to make them as fun as we can! Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Karabiner on September 13, 2006, 02:29:23 PM It's okay, there are two day ones in case you miss the first one ;goodvevil;

Their early morning flight has still failed to take off is now only due to leave at 3.30pm!! This unfortunately means that our hero's will miss the start of the EPT today.
They will get there as soon as humanly possible and be ready to inform and entertain, if not slightly late. Thanks Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: booder on September 13, 2006, 03:31:01 PM :hello: chilli and ;thankyou; for keeping us informed.

So, we will be on air around 1900 UK Time I guess. On behalf of blonde, our apologies for this, it's not Jen & snoops fault, these things happen, & I'm sure our two Updating Heroes will make up for it. Jen also told me she just loves Easyjet. If I were you, I'd not mess with the sleep-deprived Miss Mason tonight, get my drift? Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Smart Ace on September 13, 2006, 06:45:16 PM SMS from Betsson-Jannicke (real blond from Norway - could anyone please re-post the picture from Jen's visit in Grebbestad?):
Johnny almost out, after loosing an all in, holding A-10 on a 10 high board, meeting pocket 6, making it to the runner-runner flush. Down to 750 chips, but doublet up with KK one of the next hands, and with AQ againts AK 5 minutes later. +/- 3000 in chips no. Gunnar Østebrod have about 16.000. SmartAce Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: luckyblind on September 13, 2006, 06:49:12 PM Looks like Marc Goodwin is out, his seat is empty. Tough starting table with Ram & Roland De Wolfe.
Nick Gibson is cruising on 20k ish at the end of level 2. Thewy has 8k ans Stuart Fox is sat to Phil Ivey's left both had 10k last time I checked. Patrik Antonius was registered for today but Pokerstars emailed him 2moro as his starting day! Someone else managed to get themselves banned from the Casino yesterday and so can't play their seat today! Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: tikay on September 13, 2006, 06:57:53 PM Jen & The Snoopster are imminent now. Now, here's a text just in from Thewy which contains a phrase you never thought you'd hear from him. I think's he's unwell. "....On Break now, 8,500, time to re-group. Feel like I've played weak-passive". Maybe it's from a different Julian. No need for descriptions of why we're not timely this time, suffice it to say that we were at Gatwick airport at 8:30am.
Badge and power supply sourced, it's time to get some counts after a couple of missed levels from all those you know and follow here on blonde... A big thank you to everyone who held the fort with tantalising tidbits of information on the start of Day 1a - we'll hope to do as good a job now we're here! :hello: Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Djinn on September 13, 2006, 07:15:31 PM A press conference has just kicked off here in the Barcelona press room - here's the skinny:
The History - 212 people, then 325 last year, from chaotic to a prepared-for tournament this year: 480 the turnout this time round... "Hopefully the rest of the EPT will carry on like this..." packed to bursting with a range of players from around Europe. Lots of Swedes, apparently. Now John Duthie is reminiscing on the (really quite recent) start of the thing, and its unprecedented success (apparently stemming from an idea "in the bath"), joining with Pokerstars and becoming this packed series of events. More following from Snoops... Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: snoopy1239 on September 13, 2006, 07:16:28 PM Interestingly, John Duthie and colleague are giving a press conference in which they are discussing various aspects of the EPT and opening up to questions.
1st question: Do you plan to open up to other countries? Duthie: an unequivocal yes. I've visited Germany, Poland, Portugal and a country that I don't believe exists... Czechoslovakia. It's a question of finding good venues that can cater for the large numbers. Many are just slot casinos with low ceilings. The legalities are an issue too. Can you charge money? etc Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Djinn on September 13, 2006, 07:23:48 PM How about extending the EPT to three start days to accommodate everyone?
- Not such a great idea (6 day tourney a bit much for most players to fit in) - would rather find a way to have more players per start day; raising the buy-in would be "a bit unfair"... (While I'm telling you all this sideline stuff, and listening to the press regulations, Snoopy is doing the real part - getting a list of players and maybe a couple of photos) Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: snoopy1239 on September 13, 2006, 07:25:54 PM Spotted a few players still at the felt:
Rory Mathews Ulriksen JP Kelly Doc (from Walsall) Martin Wendt Peter Smythe Torstein Iversen Luca Pagano James Arkenhead Johnny Lodden Nick Gibson Julian Thew Jeff Buffenbarger Christer Johnanssen (please excuse any incorrect spellings) Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Royal Flush on September 13, 2006, 07:31:33 PM hello snooooooopy, hello jeeeeeeeen

My bad - Rory Matthews is NOT present, although his twin is. Ram seems to be lingering, so I wouldn't be suprised if he was part of the batch currently on din dins. Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Djinn on September 13, 2006, 08:07:19 PM We thought the field looked a little small, and it's because half of them are on a dinner break right now, with the other half swapping over in a few minutes. So here are some stories from Half One:
Mainly Nottingham Nick Gibson has been involved in a bit of controversy - as he says, when I ask him if he has any tales, "Yes, two awesome ones!" In level two he bluffed all in for his last 4k on the river with a missed flush draw (the pot was a tasty size). His opponent, who'd actually been on just middle pair until he two-paired the river, called. Gwibbo showed King high - his opponent mucked his hand! :dontask: Then, as the table gave each other funny looks, opponent took his hand back and called the floor for a ruling - harsh but fair, Nick took that pot down. A little later, a bizarre dealer move gave all the chips at the end of a big pot (stacks included) to Nick's losing two pair (the Other Guy had a straight). More floor calling confusion, and Nick's down to 3,600. But still in. Amazingly. Martin Wendt 13,700 Julian Thew 9,900 Gwibbo 3,800 JP Kelly 10,600 Karl Mahrenholz 12,800 Richard Redmond 17,000 Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Djinn on September 13, 2006, 08:12:49 PM I passed Julian Thew when on the button, and involved in a hand. The board stood at 2c Th 4d 6s. His one Matey had checked to him; he bet 1,400 into the 2,600 pot. After a good think, Matey moved in for his short stack (can't have been more than 2kish). Julian called with his Ac Kh.
Matey showed 9h 9d - it was good, Julian's down to under 8k... Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Pab on September 13, 2006, 08:13:11 PM :hello: Jen and Snoopy
Congrats on making it to barcelona eventually, I was still undecided about weather to attend this event, glad i didnt as i spoke to someone on monday and they said it had sold out! doh! Im anticipating great updates as usual, Pab Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: AlrightJack on September 13, 2006, 08:13:25 PM Well, so much for getting here early. At least I bumped into Jen and Snoopy in the airport, so it wasn't too lonely waiting an extra 4 hours for the flight.
As we landed I got a text from JP to tell me he had 4,750 chips. By the time I arrived at the casino and found JP, he was all in. Team Hink's Sebastian had raised from mid position to 600, with the blinds at 100/200. The guy to his left had flat called and JP, in his first event as a Blue Square sponsored player, had moved all in. I waited nervously while Sebastian thought momentarily then called. The guy who limped the initial raise passed and JP turned over Ahrt Qc Sebastian flipped 9d 9s The flop was 2d 8h 4s My heart started beating faster. Had I just endured a 5 hour delay on the flight in order to get here just in time to see JP's exit? Well, no, as he has Sebastian covered, but only just. The Qd on the turn was a relief and the harmless Ks on the river meant that I had actually arrived just in time to see JP double up! He goes in his dinner break soon, so we're off for some chinese and a catch up on how things are going. Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Djinn on September 13, 2006, 08:14:36 PM Yes, Pab - Mr. Duthie recommending advance booking nowadays...
Spotted in the half which is currently eating: none other than Phil Ivey, whose stack was pointed out by JP when he took a break from being aggressive. But he's off for Chinese with Jon Raab (another Easyjet victim) in a minute. Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Djinn on September 13, 2006, 08:17:11 PM OK, are you ready for a really long list? Sure, what could be more fascinating? "Nothing!" EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: snoopy1239 on September 13, 2006, 08:17:33 PM A cracking Mateyboy cubed moment, courtesy of Mr Ribena berry, Tony Chessa.
MB#1 called with 6d 6c and MB#2, nextdoor, raised with Ad Kd. MB#1 then announced call out of turn, to which the dealer informed him that it wasn't his go. MB#3, nextdoor again, then re-raised with Qd Qs. MB#1 then went to fold, but was told that he wasn't allowed to because of his out-of-turn play. Incredibly, he then attempted to move all-in, but finally called as he was obliged to. MB#2 also called. With MB#1 pushed off the flop, MB#2 took it down with his straight flush on a 2d 3d 4d x 5d board, just pipping MB#3's Queen high flush. Bizarrely, MB#1 would have won with his 6d if he'd stayed in the hand. Kind of odd to see someone try to fold raise and re-reaise all at the same time. Did u keep up with that? I didn't... Not sure why, but it does hold talented players such as Rob Hollink and former WPT winner, Rolan De Wolfe (ronaldinho on blonde).
Our eagle eyed viewers may also notice that Roland has 15,275 and Rob has 11,625. Although that would be displaying an exceedingly large amount of eagle-eyedness. Caught up with Ben Grundy, who's a fairly short stack now and lamenting his seating on the right of Rob Hollink. Roland shares this position, which is making it awkward for the two of them to attack the four tighter players whom Ben says are to the left of Rob - now with too few chips to really raise and pass to a re-raise, he looks a little frustrated. Still in, though, unlike many. I'd estimate a quarter of players are now playing cash or in the bar. Ben Grundy - "I'm on about several thousand, but have a pretty bad table with Hollink to my immediate left. He's attacking the tight players around the back and keeps re-raising my raises. To call him means committing most of my chips, so I have to keep folding to him. At the moment, I'm only playing when I get a hand." Woodley - (talking about his double up) "I knew if he flat-called my bet that a f***ing heart would hit the Turn, but I wasn't f***ing folding, no way." With the blinds at 200/400, she moved all-in for 6k preflop with Tens, only to run into Foxy's Pocket Rockets. Sjavik folds after a lenghty dwell. He just can't sit still can he? Literally moments earlier, he took on a button raiser from the big blind. The flop came: 6d 5d 9s. Nick checked, the button bet 1,300, and Nick raised to 3,500. A bit of a think later, and the Button moved in on him. Sitting with what I call 'statue arms' he waited to see if Gwibbo would call, and he took his time, getting the pot and raise separated and thinking about the extra 12,875 precisely to him. After counting it out of his stack, he passed - BA Kildalen made a brave effort to get the re-raiser to show his hand, "for the cameras!" before they moved on. He's up to a moderate 14,000, but not going nuts at this stage, exhibiting a quiet solidity not usually attributed to him... despite the lack of recklessness, when he started raising every hand (albeit with AA then AA then AK) he only took down the raise in front of him each time, without coaxing anyone to gamble. He says only two hands near the beginning of the comp are all players have seen, so he must be as much a mystery as the players on either side of him, who he admits are pretty tidy. Photos coming... Big TK (Thomas Kremser) and his gang are no longer wearing the matching ties and hankie (which, incidentally, was the always the same colour as the plasma screen) that were so popular last season. However, he assures me that this is merely because he is not with his team, which I guess suggests that he's working with a different group of people this year. He also claimed that he was an indivdual and so should be different. I agreed and used the 'a headmaster doesn't wear the same uniform as the pupils' analogy. He looked at me rather blankly. Can anyoen guess Big TK's tie colour. It's a combination of two shades. Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: Djinn on September 14, 2006, 03:09:00 AM Les Kerrigan, chip leader for a good length of time, has now dropped to average, as some reasonable stacks clash creating one big stack and (usually) one elimination...
Like Rolf Pedersen, a Danish guy - the one who pushed Gwibbo off that pot earlier, and whom no one could identify (even Rolf Slotboom) until Henning Granstad made the discovery. Anyway, Arko Helland, a Norwegian, appears (from the position of the button when I saw the table as players stood up) to have limped utg with 5d 5h. Big blind Rolf raised with Ac Kd - I don't know whether this was the final or penultimate raise, all I saw were the AK and 55 on their backs and some tense railers urging the Fives to Hold! Hold they did, and that was a 60k pot to the Norwegian...pictured here Title: Re: POKERSTARS EPT: BARCELONA - INTERACTIVE Post by: snoopy1239 on September 14, 2006, 03:10:20 AM And now Peter Gould is on 34,500 after his 3.7k bet into a flop of Kh 9c 2h went unanswered.

His start to the tournament was, some might say, disastrous - down to 400 and literally chip and chaired. Now he has over 50k (although doesn't stack in a counter-friendly manner). Ian Woodley can have a prize too - for quietly building up 44,500 without anyone taking much notice. He's in the big blind when Johnny's on the button.
