Title: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Colchester Kev on May 12, 2007, 05:25:13 PM Ladies and Gentlemen of blonde, the time has come in my life to start making changes to my lifestyle and general outlook.
I have decided that with immediate effect I shall start dieting and exercising regularly, i understand that this will be a massive change to my normal attitude to life in general but it is something that I feel I need to do. I will stop smoking soon but will not give a definite date yet. I will be going to the dentist ( something that I have a real phobia of) and will just throw myself at their mercy and tell them to just do what they need to, I am very conscious of my teeth and need to get them sorted. To be quite truthful, I hate the skin that I'm in, and want to do something about it before its too late. So its goodbye to pies, chips, chocolates and the like, and hello to a more structured and healthy living regime. I know it will be hard work but I also know that I can do it (im a stubborn bastard and by posting it on here i know that it will serve as a reminder and a place to look back on when times get tough, and give me the focus to maintain the willpower) So that's it, a tough challenge but one that I am ready for.... no scales/starting weights etc.. Im just going to eat more healthily, take more exercise and basically change the habits of a lifetime. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Title: The last few minutes have consisted of.... Post by: Sheriff Fatman on May 12, 2007, 05:54:13 PM Step 1: Read Kev's post
Step 2: Check date of Kev's post - not April 1st! Step 3: Read Kev's post again. Step 4: Look for hidden text in post sized at 1pt and stating "If you believe this you're an idiot" Step 5: Read Kev's post again. Step 6: Start to consider the possibility that it might be serious. Step 7: Feel afraid, very afraid. Step 8: Wonder if the recent bout of man-flu had made him delirious. Step 9: Read Kev's post again - spelling looks ok, no sign of delirium evident. Step 10: FEEL AFRAID, VERY AFRAID! Honestly, good luck with this Kev. I go through one of these spells at regular intervals in the hope that one day I'll maybe crack it. Perhaps one day I will but whatever has triggered this has obviously had an impact, so I wish you the best. Now I'm off to hide somewhere during the mood swings. ;scarymoment; Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Royal Flush on May 13, 2007, 01:16:34 AM Ladies and Gentlemen of blonde, the time has come in my life to start making changes to my lifestyle and general outlook. I have decided that with immediate effect I shall start drinking in the day time regularly, I understand that this will be a minor change to my normal attitude to life in general but it is something that I feel I need to do. I will stop smoking Silk cut and buy Marlboro but will not give a definite date yet. I will be going to the dentist ( I fancy the new Dental nurse from Poland she is approximately 18yrs old ) and will just throw myself at their mercy of her and tell them to just do what they need to, I am very conscious of my teeth and need to get laid. To be quite truthful, I hate the skins I use for Hash and want to do something about it before its too late. So its Hello to pies, chips, chocolates and the like, and Good bye to a more structured and healthy living regime. To answer a few responses, I am doing this for myself, not for anyone else, the end result will be self respect and self satisfaction and that is all the motivation I need. I have been quite ill recently and it was during this time that i made the decision to alter my lifestyle and turn over a new leaf. So Like I said, thankyou for the support and encouragement and I will try and drop a post on this thread every now and then to keep everyone informed of my progress. Rest assured, I will still be a sarcastic git and a general wind up merchant on here, its the body that i want to change, not the personality ;) Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Good luck, but I fear you have already made a mistake. Saying you are going to stop smoking but not deciding when to do it is just not good enough. Just stop right now! No patches, no gum, just stop. It's easy to do. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The additction to nicotine goes in less than a week, its just the habit forming situations that are more difficult to deal with, i.e. pint n cig. But as your new you won't be including much of that, its should be a dawdle for you. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! I would concentrate on getting the healthy eating sorted, get the teeth done, then introduce some exercise and tackle the smoking once all that is second nature. Each to their own of course. I plan on giving up the fags in a few weeks, and saving the money spent to get my teeth done too ;D Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Gradual decline and patienece is the key in anything to do with cutting down. Dont expect miracles in the first month or even 2. Its all about the willpower. Personally i only managed to quit after i'd lost my dad to lung cancer, even while he was being treated i used to go and visit and pop out for ciggie breaks. At least i used the experience for something positive in the end. I quit smoking after reading Allen Carrs the easy way to give up book this worked for me and my wife plus many others here on blonde http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=15501.0 (http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=15501.0) unfortunately i also know of several others who have failed with the easy way. As per everything in life it's what works for the individual. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Claw75 on May 13, 2007, 06:17:47 PM claw, tenner says you don't. If you've relapsed on each previous occasion, regardless of how much later, perhaps it hasn't worked for you...you plan to give up, but subconciously you plan to relapse at a later date. I would suggest a more abrupt unplanned end to your smoking if you want to stop it for good. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! I recently reached a stage in my life when I had to really take stock of the situation in terms of health etc. And although I am almost ten older than you, I can very much relate to your position. Also I guess, the battle with health has always been a part of my life. Ten years ago, when I was your age; it was s struggle to try and keep fit in order to continue with playing football. With having to split my time running a games company, the chip shop and poker; it really was a challenge. But somehow, I managed to just do enough. Ten years later, I just can’t tell you how much I have benefited from those efforts. Because in truth, if I had failed back then, then I would have missed out on so much now. And trust me, at this very moment, I feel better now than I did back then. But it has not been easy, I guess it began about four years ago when I found it difficult to even sit at the poker table. Admittedly, my situation at the time was very much dire, and as such; left very little peace in the mind to draw strength from. I had become a wreck - I allowed my other battles to become my focus. Sad part was, I forgot just how important health was to that battle. Don’t do the same! Don’t leave yourself playing catch up when you should be living it up! But remember, it will be a slow process. Just like poker, it will require patience above all else. So start easy - go it nice and slow - keep within your limits - don’t cause any kind of injury to slow you down. And yet, be prepared for such an event. And don‘t allow any setbacks to stop you from your main goal. Slowly, you will find your limits growing and you will reach new heights. That will put such a smile on your face - you will love your new life. Example: About two years ago I decided that poker was going to take a back seat and that I would focus on getting fit. And because of my efforts in my younger days, it didn’t take long before I was playing football again. And man did that feel good! About four months ago, a knee injury meant that I had to stop football for a while (may need minor surgery, but trying to work it off through other means). Anyway, it also meant that I couldn’t do my favorite exercise of going to the park and kicking a ball against a wall - I needed to adapt. And so swimming came into my life. I gotta tell ye Kev, start swimming my man - it will do wonders for you. You will feel like a machine in no time. And btw - I used a snorkel today for the first time and I was able to swim as much as I wanted - simply a great workout without stress to the joints! As for the smoking - I also know that my time to quit is getting close - I wish us both well on that one. But mostly, I just hope that you get to feel how I feel now. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Colchester Kev on May 13, 2007, 10:22:21 PM thank you Peter, an inspiring post.
I think the most important thing i have on my side is that I am doing this for "ME". It is my decision and mine alone.. and I think that helps in keeping the discipline, because at the end of the day I am letting myself down if i dont keep it going, so the will power and focus will stay strong. Thanks again for the support. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Dewi_cool on May 13, 2007, 10:29:30 PM There you go Kev, yu'll be swimming like a fish in no time :D

No temptations and plenty of fruit to snack on.... and plenty of water to drink. The mission is underway. This is a really good idea - I never have any food in the house either. I'll have one meal in the fridge but after that there'll only maybe be an apple somewhere. No biscuits or chocolate or whatnot. Also, don't have any beer in the house - 2 or 3 beers whilst sat playing poker every night quickly add up. The calories in even one beer will negate any exercise you do at this stage completely. By all means drink in the pub, but forcing you to leave the house to have beer will cut it down without you really noticing. I've developed a real taste for sparkling water. Very healthy, but because it's fizzy it seems like 'a proper drink' and not just water. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: ericstoner on May 15, 2007, 10:00:32 PM Kev, Just read through this thread.WTG m8 I'm glad you've decided to make a go at getting fit.
Don't forget what Peter said, get down to the local swimming pool. It really is the best exercise. I had been going once a week, until my little incident.it gets your muscle working and your joints flexing again without the strain.I had forgotten how to swim at first, but built my exercise plan up by walking up and down. The funny thing is you don't feel like a pr@ck, and after time you'll feel the benefit. I'm always amazed there are so few older men ( other than pensioners) taking advantage of the pool. P'S I find the best time to go, is mother and toddler mornings.......................................but that's just me ;kev; Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: KingPoker on May 16, 2007, 12:53:10 PM It all depends on how you wanna do it. Some people believe that when dieting or living healthily that they have to eat 3 meals a day to do so. When i do kick myself up the arse from time to time and try to lose weight i find snacking on healthy stuff in between the set meal times sustains me throughout the day. Without doubt the hardest part of dieting is simply cutting down on fat intake as that is where most of the taste is to be found.
In fact i have been inspired by this post by what eric said and i really now have the urge to start up swimming agin, i used to love swimming (goes back to my navy seal days but dont wanna talk about it!) and it really is such a good cardio exercise. Cant wait!!!!! Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: kinboshi on May 16, 2007, 01:04:14 PM It all depends on how you wanna do it. Without doubt the hardest part of dieting is simply cutting down on fat intake as that is where most of the taste is to be found. Moderation is the key. I don't eat fatty foods most of the time because my Dad and his Dad both suffered from heart problems. When I go out I'll eat anything, but that's every once in a while and does no harm as far as I'm concerned. On a daily basis I eat a relatively healthy diet - fish, chicken, lots of salad - and I also eat shed-loads of carbs (usually bread and rice) - but as I run and do other exercise that gets used up. I don't know if it's best to eat three main meals, or to 'graze' all day - as long as it's good stuff, I'm not sure it matters. It seems 'experts' differ on their opinions with this one. Drink lots of water as well (doesn't have to be water, but lots of a non-diuretic drink that doesn't contain too much crap) - well over 2 litres a day. That helps to keep your body healthy, and lots of times you think you're hungry, your body is actually dehydrated. You will actually be dehydrated long before you actually feel thirsty, and I just keep a big bottle of water next to me and take a swig from it every so often. Helps keep you fit as well, as you have to go to the loo more often! Water is a very important part of a healthy diet. You can go for a week without food. You can't survive much more than a day without water. Post by: Colchester Kev on May 19, 2007, 03:50:52 PM Latest update ...... the belt test reveals a bit of success, moved in a notch :)
I purposely have avoided scales because I fear that a week with little or no weight loss could weaken the resolve, so its just the belt test and the way my clothes fit that are the benchmarks. The exercise remains as the daily walk to Tesco, but I aim to step that up in the coming weeks. so far so good. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! The exercise remains as the daily walk to Tesco, but I aim to step that up in the coming weeks. so far so good. It's probably a better measure anyway. When you start adding more rigorous exercise to your regime you could gain as much in muscle as you lose in fat (maybe) which wouldn't show up on the scales but would on the belt test. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Colchester Kev on May 25, 2007, 12:31:34 AM still focused and to be honest its getting a little easier, the daily walk to Tesco is a doddle and not taxing me enough, so its getting near to the time when I need to step up the exercise a notch.

I am still focussed and motivated and today I bought a new pair of jeans .. 4 inches has been lost from the waistline. Like i said in the original post, i never weighed myself at the start due to the pressure that you put yourself under when weighing yourself at the end of a week and finding you have only lost 1lb or 2 .... I am much happier just doing it my way and keeping my motivation and drive by looking forward long term rather than on the basis of a weekly weigh in. in the next few weeks, I intend to start swimming a couple of times a week as well as the daily walk to Tesco .... Still smoking though ... thats the next big thing to get my teeth into. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: RED-DOG on June 13, 2007, 12:36:28 PM WTG Kev!!

Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Indestructable on July 29, 2007, 09:44:02 AM Nice one Kev. I am having a go myself as of today, post holiday flab and all that and would like to fit back in to a lot of my trousers that are gathering dust.
Keep up the good work. ;applause; Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: brummieboy on July 29, 2007, 10:04:39 AM Excellent going Kev, how many lb's have you lost so far then?
I'm attempting to loose weight but really struggling to do it on my own, ended up joining Slimming World to see if that could help motivate me, lost 8lb in the first two weeks but stayed the same the last two as i've been slipping back into my old eating habits. That pic has got me motivated again though. ;applause; PS are you sure your not tricking us and thats a pic of your twin brother that you've never mentioned. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: M3boy on July 29, 2007, 10:06:38 AM Jesus Kev!!!

Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: sovietsong on July 29, 2007, 11:29:14 AM ay up kev, i just read this thread from start to finish and im feeling inspired! as you could prob guess from all my posts about food i do love some good scran! I am going to try to cut down/start swimming (when i was a boy i used to train with 'leeds sharks'...gave it up after a couple of months early starts!). The change is unreal in such a short time period and i hope to emulate your success! Thanks for setting such a good example!
Good work! Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: Colchester Kev on July 29, 2007, 03:24:28 PM wow, you should write a diet book, probably make a fortune. can you give us some idea as to how you have done it? Basically I have just cut out all the crap that i used to eat, no chocolate, no chips, no pies, and replaced warburtons toastie for nimble wholemeal. There is no secret to it honestly, just eat less and more healthily. Excellent going Kev, how many lb's have you lost so far then? No Idea mate, never weighed myself at the start for precisely the reasons you stated... its so easy to lose the motivation if you have a week or 2 with no loss, so i decided to cut that pressure out and just do it my way and judge the weight loss by the looseness of my trousers ;) I want to lose another 4 inches off the gut and hopefully the gym wil help with toning up the bingo wings and the flabby belly. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: MPOWER on July 29, 2007, 04:48:40 PM Very impressed Kev

Was how to bend not break the rules Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: ericstoner on August 07, 2007, 09:22:12 AM What Kev proves, oh so brilliantly, is that if you are a fatty fatty fat fat, you can by eating less and eating better food, lose the exes weight.
This has been a fabulous achievement by the boy, so if you are like he was. pull yourself together, make the EFFORT.................................and get it done. It's a terrible comparison, but as they said, there were no overweight people in concentration camps. Title: Re: The times, they are a changing !! Post by: tikay on August 07, 2007, 11:09:11 AM Never mind the 8 inches, you must feel fantastic, having took on a battle & won it. That's the real thing. Brilliant.
