today I decided to walk to tesco (a round trip of around3/4 of a mile) and just buy the food for today, I have decided not to keep any food in the house, and just do this walk every day to buy that days provisions.
No temptations and plenty of fruit to snack on.... and plenty of water to drink.
The mission is underway.
This is a really good idea - I never have any food in the house either. I'll have one meal in the fridge but after that there'll only maybe be an apple somewhere. No biscuits or chocolate or whatnot. Also, don't have any beer in the house - 2 or 3 beers whilst sat playing poker every night quickly add up. The calories in even one beer will negate any exercise you do at this stage completely. By all means drink in the pub, but forcing you to leave the house to have beer will cut it down without you really noticing.
I've developed a real taste for sparkling water. Very healthy, but because it's fizzy it seems like 'a proper drink' and not just water.

Kev, Just read through this thread.WTG m8 I'm glad you've decided to make a go at getting fit.
Don't forget what Peter said, get down to the local swimming pool. It really is the best exercise.
I had been going once a week, until my little incident.it gets your muscle working and your joints flexing again without the strain.I had forgotten how to swim at first, but built my exercise plan up by walking up and down.
The funny thing is you don't feel like a pr@ck, and after time you'll feel the benefit.
I'm always amazed there are so few older men ( other than pensioners) taking advantage of the pool.
P'S I find the best time to go, is mother and toddler mornings.......................................but that's just me

I really like the idea of not having lots of food in the house, no temptation to just eat when bored. I do the weekly shop and its suits me but I dont think it would be too much hassles to walk to M&S daily for what I need. Well that's when my knee gets better when i hurt it trying to get fit

It all depends on how you wanna do it. Some people believe that when dieting or living healthily that they have to eat 3 meals a day to do so. When i do kick myself up the arse from time to time and try to lose weight i find snacking on healthy stuff in between the set meal times sustains me throughout the day. Without doubt the hardest part of dieting is simply cutting down on fat intake as that is where most of the taste is to be found.
In fact i have been inspired by this post by what eric said and i really now have the urge to start up swimming agin, i used to love swimming (goes back to my navy seal days but dont wanna talk about it!) and it really is such a good cardio exercise. Cant wait!!!!!

Moderation is the key. I don't eat fatty foods most of the time because my Dad and his Dad both suffered from heart problems. When I go out I'll eat anything, but that's every once in a while and does no harm as far as I'm concerned. On a daily basis I eat a relatively healthy diet - fish, chicken, lots of salad - and I also eat shed-loads of carbs (usually bread and rice) - but as I run and do other exercise that gets used up. I don't know if it's best to eat three main meals, or to 'graze' all day - as long as it's good stuff, I'm not sure it matters. It seems 'experts' differ on their opinions with this one.
Drink lots of water as well (doesn't have to be water, but lots of a non-diuretic drink that doesn't contain too much crap) - well over 2 litres a day. That helps to keep your body healthy, and lots of times you think you're hungry, your body is actually dehydrated. You will actually be dehydrated long before you actually feel thirsty, and I just keep a big bottle of water next to me and take a swig from it every so often. Helps keep you fit as well, as you have to go to the loo more often! Water is a very important part of a healthy diet. You can go for a week without food. You can't survive much more than a day without water.

You should find the swimming easy.

The drive into Feltham for tonights Sky poker gig was a toughy, I had to pass loads of roadside cafes and could almost taste the egg and bacon sarnies as i drove past.
I also had the temptation of passing loads of little
thiefs
chefs .... their Olympic breakfasts are a bit spesh !!
But the resolve didnt weaken and i managed to keep the faith ....
onwards and upwards

Good post bout water, bit of useful crap that i finally get to use is drink regularly, when you feel thirsty you are already 15-20% dehydrated!
And also what i forgot to mention earlier was i dont change what i eat when i try and lose weight, i simply put less on the plate-you'd be surprised how much of a difference that makes on its own!!!!
And kin, as to the swimming reference in bold, i assume you mean becuase sharks are excellent swimmers!!!!

today I decided to walk round tesco and just buy the food for today, instead of getting one of those little four wheeled scooters with the basket on the front....
The mission is underway.

Latest update ...... the belt test reveals a bit of success, moved in a notch
I purposely have avoided scales because I fear that a week with little or no weight loss could weaken the resolve, so its just the belt test and the way my clothes fit that are the benchmarks.
The exercise remains as the daily walk to Tesco, but I aim to step that up in the coming weeks.
so far so good.

It's probably a better measure anyway. When you start adding more rigorous exercise to your regime you could gain as much in muscle as you lose in fat (maybe) which wouldn't show up on the scales but would on the belt test.
