Duncan Bannatyne is very anti-gambling

He's bid on the Nuts Poker League in Dragons Den but was out-negotiated by two other dragons.

The Nuts Poker League never actually got the backing in the end, after the show they went over the finer details and decided against it.

On a side note, has anyone had Reggae Reggae Sauce, its well nice.

Was it not the case that the Nuts Poker guy got Dragon's funding then the Dragons got gazumped and ther Poker League fella went elsewhere?

Just looking up gazumped...........

I actually heard they took a look at his books and his facts and figures didn't add up. This was from someone who works for a rival pub poker league, so read into that what you will.

This happens a lot on Dragon's Den - a lot of the deals agreed never actually happen.

And he also owns a chain of casinos

I believe the deal stalled over the legalities of poker in the pub and other compliance issues.
And yes, Reggae Reggae is the mutts.

I could see it actually, not because its a good investment opportunity because 99% of the time it wont be, but simply because they are probably very ignorant of the game and someone persuasive could say 'look I have a shark on my sharkscope, that means Im good innit' and they fall for it.

I'm trying to think of a good Fergus joke to wrap the thread up, watch this space.

As soon as JJ has to admit there is luck involved in poker, he will be out the door. The Dragons aren't exactly 'risk takers'. But good luck to him nonetheless.

They're not stupid though. Surely the first thing they'll ask is that if he's making money why does he need 65k. I don't think they'll understand the BR management aspect of it

Well one of their big reasons for accepting the Nuts poker league was they were poker affiliates as well, which the (the show at least) made out to be a big deal, but every man and their dog is a poker affiliate which they didnt seem to know.

Plus that Peter bloke (the one in all the adverts) occassionally goes 'Im gonna punt on a shit idea' so there is always a chance

I hope he doesn't get it simply because I cba to follow up my initial idea

wow,
i was discussing this very idea with a good friend of mine in vegas (no, it wasn't tikay)...i think he would have been a great candidate but we were both concerned about;
a) how to pitch it,
b) how to live with the embarrasment if you got a roasting,
he'll be gutted someone beat him to it!
next step dragons den usa methinks...

Lol, was thinking this very idea a while back. Just don't think the dragon's will go for it though. There was a similar pitch earlier, when a young race driver wanted funding for racing, and he was willing to give a percentage away for every race he competed in for a large number of years. Can't remember if he got the funding though, don't think he did.

he got nothing. I think the problem was the funding he wanted would only cover the first year and so the same would be needed several times over before he had any chance of getting near to decent racing

If some of the dragons stump up the money it will have been a bad year for the flushman.

Not only is he the 3rd best in Brighton after Moorman and SBRugby but he gets toppled off the richest stakers list, only just though obv.

Yeah but only because they heard what he had made in previous investments. I was hoping once they all tried selling themselves to him, that he would turn around and say "actually, i dont need your money, I am richer than you all" and then just walk off. Sadly not.

He did miss a few opportunities, but its far easier as an armchair critic.  Starting a short handed game might not have been a winner. Either for the venture capitalists taht were frozen out or for those that played and sent him spinning...

Backing a poker player is a gamble, but so is opening a restaurant at the moment.

I thought that was a pretty bad pitch really.

Firstly, wear a suit. Don't wear sunglasses ffs. One of them even commented on that.

I'd have been more inclined to talk up the gambling side of it. Don't even try and pitch it as a business as it clearly isn't one. Point out that you're a +EV gamble. Offer some proof that you're a +EV gamble. Explain why poker is gambling that can give a good player an edge, etc. And once they realise this just hope one of them takes a punt.

Even then though I doubt this will succeed. As soon as he said he'd won 500k the obvious question was "why do you need our money?" When you answer "i spent it on a holiday home abroad somewhere and haven't got any of it left" then you're unlikely to get far.

It was a thinly veiled 'I love Griggy post but I just can't admit it'.

I played against JJ several times at the Gutshot in £1/2 and £2/5 and he can beat standard small live cash games where people are queuing up to give their wages and roulette winnings away and he's decent but thats about it - nothing special. If I gave him £65k to play 33 comps I wouldn't expect much back and would be happy to break even.

lol @  people saying pitch was good

I could have walked in on the fly and done a better pitch, he was never going to get the money anyway but that was terrible.

At least wear a suit FFS

That's tomorrow night's viewing sorted.... ;popcorn;

what a bellend.

all the dragons have is his word that he's better than average, never mind +EV, not mentioning the 250% ROI claim. surely even if he gave the perfect pitch and they all got the idea etc then they would presume that he would be able to get the money from someone (flushy) who had a better chance of knowing if he's any good or not.

never ever ever gonna work imo

It was BBC who insisted on the sunglasses and poker table apparently.  Seems you don't get total ownership of your pitch.

Was never going to work anyway - to have any chance you'd have to create a business plan that they could relate to - a poker hedge fund with management/performance fees and travel expenses to be recharged to the fund.
