Title: NFL 2010
Post by: gatso on February 12, 2010, 02:35:29 PM
lots of stuff happening with the end of the cba that sounds really interesting but I don't really understand, can someone explain in layman's terms?

so looks like we'll have an uncapped season. what happens if the clubs pump up salaries then agree to a new cba with cap for 2011? will all players automatically get pay cuts?

is there a chance the league will remain uncapped going forward?

if this happened is it likely the draft system would be scrapped? I know the 2011 draft is def happening but there seems to be some doubt about anything beyond that

what're the chances of strike action in 2011? what form is it likely to take?

if it goes ahead I do know that the amount of free agents a team can sign will be limited and I believe the top 4 team in each conference will not be able to sign any new free agents

I believe the top 4 team in each conference will not be able to sign any new free agents

not that simple. this is from the latest jets newsletter summing up the situation the top 8 are in. I'm still bloody confused though

Quote
As it stands right now, the Jets have seven players — LS James Dearth, DE Marques Douglas, K Jay Feely, LB Ryan Fowler, TE Ben Hartsock, LB/special teamer Larry Izzo and FB Tony Richardson — who will become unrestricted free agents on March 5. The Jets, one of four teams who participated in the conference championship games, won’t be able to sign any UFAs themselves unless one of the aforementioned seven signs with another club.

“We can't sign one until we would lose one, and again, that's someone whose contract expires and they have been in the league for six or more seasons,” said GM Mike Tannenbaum. “If a player gets cut by another team, they become a free agent and we would be able to sign them.”

The Jets don’t have a large group of UFAs because only players who have been in the league six years or more will qualify for free agency in 2010. Before we turn our attention to restricted free agents (RFAs), there is a salary-matching component to this whole UFA situation.

For example, let’s say one of the above Jets veterans becomes a UFA and signs a three-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons for $1 million in year one, $1.3 million in year two and $1.9 million in year three. The Jets could in turn sign one player themselves, but his first-year salary couldn’t be more than the $1 million the former Jets vet received, and then the club would be limited to a 30 percent jump from that original $1 million each additional season. So the Jets could go as high as $1.3 million in year two and then $1.6 million in year three.

Even if the Jets wanted to make a play for a Julius Peppers-type player, the likelihood of that happening would be slim and none. If the Panthers don’t sign Pep to an extension or place the franchise tag on the star before Feb. 25, he’s going to be a UFA and will want to be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. Also, ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently reported that the Jets may work on an extension for the game’s best CB, Darrelle Revis.

The Jets’ group of restricted free agents stands at 11 — QB Kellen Clemens, CB Drew Coleman, WR Braylon Edwards, DT Howard Green, T Wayne Hunter, S James Ihedigbo, WR Brad Smith, S Eric Smith, RB-KR Leon Washington and WR-special teams ace Wallace Wright. Although the deadline for the Green & White to tender qualifying offers is March 4, Mr. T. already announced that the club is “definitely” going to tender Washington, Edwards was a “similar situation” to the explosive back and Clemens would receive a tender as well.

By placing a tender on a restricted free agent, the Jets protect themselves from losing that player in a couple of ways. Other teams can make contract offers to the Jets’ 11 RFAs from March 5-April 15, but New York’s AFC representative would have one week to match anything that was signed, with the last possible matching date landing on April 21. If the Jets choose not to match an offer, they would receive compensation in the form of a draft pick or picks determined by the player’s tender and draft selection.

“We need a little bit more time,” Tannenbaum said when asked about what tender Washington would receive. “There are some fairly complicated rules in terms of draft classes and who you can tender at what level, so we will take a close look at that as well.”

According to an Associated Press report, there are more than 200 players who would have been UFAs and now will be RFAs under these new rules. And there are some big-time names in that category around the league, including WR Vincent Jackson and LB Shawne Merriman of the Chargers, WR Brandon Marshall and DE Elvis Dumervil of the Broncos, Cowboys WR Miles Austin, Texans LB DeMeco Ryans, Colts S Antoine Bethea, Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown, Vikings DE Ray Edwards, Redskins QB Jason Campbell, and Bucs RB Carnell “Cadillac” Williams.

Even if a new CBA was miraculously reached before March 5, the NFL would probably have to implement a transition rule that would apply for those players who were going to be RFAs before the deal was reached but then became UFAs afterward. But with no agreement, the league will enter into an uncapped year and teams will have no spending limit. Keep in mind that teams can release players with no cap consequence in 2010, but it should be noted Mr. T. has already said LB Vernon Gholston, the No. 6 selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, will return.

It is incredibly complex

I am not sure I could write it down in understandable terms

The key point is though that because its a non-salary cap year about 100 players who would have normally hit the free agent market are now "restricted" meaning they are far less likely to move.

To stop the 8 most successful teams last year buying success from here, and because the NFL is so big on parity, they cannot bring in more than 0/1 free agents unless they lose a player to another team first.

The essence of the dispute is between players union and team management over shares of TV revenues. If unresolved, there is chance of no season in 2001-12 because of strike action

As of this morning, we're 580 days away from Opening Day 2011 -- the first day there will be no football if the owners lock out the players. There are going to be 580 twists and turns of the story between now and then. Still, I believe there will be a work stoppage in 2011. The fact is, owners want players to bear some burden for the costs of all the stadiums that have been built in recent years, and players don't want to pay for something they've never paid for before. That's the elephant in the negotiating room right now, and no one's budging.

I think the NFL would budge significantly from its goal of getting the players to exempt $1 billion a year from the money the two sides currently share. But if the players don't conceptually accept that they should share in the cost of building a bigger revenue base for the first time in NFL labor history, we're about to be subjected to a long and frustrating period of vein-bulging rhetoric.

so, any discussion on the draft picks ?

Tebow ? will nobody touch him ?

For anyone looking for a QB then i think Colt McCoy has to be one of the top picks.

Tebow is not an NFL QB yet (his college offence was all shotgun and he's said to have skills that are not transferable) but someone will take a punt in the mid rounds and try and develop him

the top QBs are Clauesen and Bradford but its a poor year for QB. Great year for the big uglies both side of the ball if your team wants one. Most teams do.

Want to have a bet on where Tebow is drafted?

I win if he goes in round 1 or 2.

you win if he goes later.

I think Jacksonville might well pick him at Number 10, or trade down a little and still take him in round 1.

Ive only just read about LT being released by San Diego and Westbrook by Philly.

I would expect St Lous to take a QB with the first pick in the draft and would be amazed if the guy from Nebraska Ndomakuh Suh wasnt picked by Detroit with the 2nd pick as that seems a perfect match.

I'm not sure what to make of Tebow, looked good in his schools O but doesnt strike me as much of a pro QB.

Bears are the big movers so far in free agency picking up Peppers, rb from the vikings and a blocking TE

big money spent but with no 1st and 2nd round draft picks for the 2nd season was a must. Still no WR though

Looks a good deal for the Skins for sure.It also looks like a few teams are tidying up their problems too. Santonio Holmes has almost been given to the Jets for a 5th round pick tho he does have a 4 game ban to serve and some other off field issues but Brandon Marshall has signed for Miami for their 2nd round picks in the next two drafts.

Jets are the preseason faves and they do have the ability and they will be in the mix but think getting rid of TJ was a mistake, last year they flew under the radar this year teams will be gunning for em

Ravens have the pieces in place to make a run

Colts - always dangerous until officially eliminated

Chargers

NFC

Packers are the hip pick (unfotunatly)
Vikings ( I think the vikes are going to stumble this year , they will be good but not what they could be)

Atlanta , Saints and Niners

Haven't quite finished my research

but in no particular order

AFC East

Jets over Fins and Pats. Buffalo could be a 0-16 team. Jets defence will make them a 13-3/12-4 type team

AFC South

Another tough division. Should be the year Indy begin to slip. Houston should be competitive to win the division at last. Tennessee too. Clearest pick is Jax to struggle

AFC North

Baltimore probably. Bengals possibly. Pittsburgh rebuilding. Cleveland will be better but not a team better than 6-10

AFC West

Both the Raiders and the Chiefs should be improved. Of the two the Raiders are readier. Chargers so much talent they'll be there or thereabouts. Denver less talented, but a lot depends on their QB play and offence minus Marshall. think it might be a struggle

NFC East

Monster division as usual. I have Giants as favourites, Their defensive front is all world. Cowboys all the talent none of thebottle, but should make play-offs. Philly to slip, Washington to be better but not good enough in this division

NFC South

Saints or Atlanta. Carolina and Buccs no hopers

NFC West

Weak division. Probably 49ers to take if they get consistent QB play. Lot of talent drafted onto that team while they were in the doldrums. Arizona to slip back. Rams and Seattle better but 6 win teams not 10 win teams

NFC North

Another tough division. Lions will be fun to watch but still with Chicago behind Vikes and Packers. I like the Packers, less talented than the Vikes but more stable, more blue collar. Always get it done

If I had to say

Jets and Giants would be a fun superbowl lol

Really surprised at this.  Would have thought you'd have Dallas by a mile (and not just personal bias).

I'd go Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Redskins.  Rebuilding year for the Eagles and can't quite figure how good or bad we will be (and pre-season isn't really clearing it up so far).  Best hope is that Kolb hits the ground running and we sneak a wild card, but could just as easily be 4th place.

Are you just trying to play down the Dallas winning home Superbowl expectation?

Not at all. Cowboys have all the talent, and have had for years. They are chokers though, and won't have any of my meagre bets until they prove otherwise. Add in the extra pressure of a home sb, and problems on the OL and I'd rather back the Giants

I too think the Eagles post McNabb are rebuilding. Kolb might fire and DeSean Jackson is a real talent, but in this division I have them 3rd of 4

nyj-fins straight forecast on afc east also looks big @ 7.0

1.8 is big

12-13 win team I think

Also, anyone up for a Fantasy Football league this season?

I've just done an auction in an ESPN league and reckon it could be good fun for a blonde league.  The site is pretty slick and it's free to enter.  You play in 4 player leagues, followed by play-offs then a Superbowl.

Could be good fun as there's a few NFL fanatics on here.

Suggest $20 per team entry for prizes.  Small stakes as most (including myself) will prob be new to this.  Aiming for 12 entries.

Anyone interested?

Comprehensive breakdown of the rules. (Not too long and not too short).

6 points for a touchdown (think try in rugby) and 1 point for a conversion

3 points for a field goal through the sticks

Attacking team (11 on the field ) has four attempts to advance the ball, running or passing, ten yards. If they do, they get another four goes. etc. If they don't ball goes to other team. 100 yard pitch.

4 15 minute quarters

53 man squads, attacking players, defending players, special teams (kicking, returning kicks etc) players. Unlimited subs

Lots of tactics, formations, strategy. Chess played by 300lb monsters and 200lb flyers.

ESPN are showing Monday night football.

Sunday night football is up for grabs as Channel5 have pulled out of doing any NFL, hopefully Mike Carlson will appear somewhere or I might cry.

Oakland have been crap for a decade, but have the talent now to improve.

Their owner is mad as a box of frogs and quite possibly has already been cryogenically frozen for a decade. This tends to affect decision making at the highest level

The fans are nuts, and very badly behaved

Link here http://games.espn.go.com/frontpage/football (http://games.espn.go.com/frontpage/football).  Would plan this to be a 'standard rules' games rather than overcomplicating it first time out (i.e. you pick a team's defence rather than individuals).

You can do mock drafts on the site to see the software at work.

Is there much interaction throughout the season or is it just pick it and leave it?

Can do as little or as much as you like.  I doubt many of your team will change too often but you need to watch out for bye-weeks, etc.

The league is a week by week matchup, i.e. you win and lose each fixture rather than accumulate the highest season score.

It's basically like a real NFL draft except  the whole player pool is available to draft.

So once a player e.g Tom Brady is gone no one else can have him.

You then get matched up against someone in your league and whoever's team gets the most points that week wins

Then the top teams go into a play off and then the superbowl

Kolb is a decent QB although i do think that letting go of McNabb who was the franchise is a mistake, especially letting him go to a division rival, that could come back to bite them on the ass. The NFC East is just a stacked division where any 1 of the 4 teams could win it, i would be siding with The Cowboys as they seem to have the most stabilty in the organization.

Kolb taking over from McNabb was always going to happen, so at some point we were always going to go into a 'transition' season.  Agree about letting him go to a divisional rival though - dreading the Redskins games this season.  Beyond that though, they've gone all out to bring fresh blood through the whole roster - 10 draft picks made the 53, plus 2 other rookies - so there's a huge amount of inexperience this season.  McCoy has to step up now that Westbrook is gone, a lot is expected from Maclin and Jackson in their 2nd and 3rd seasons, and we'll have a few rookie starters in the Defense.  I'm full of optimism for the next few seasons, but this one would require too many young players to exceed expectations too quickly, as well as Kolb getting off to a flyer.

I just hope that Kolb doesn't struggle in the early games and end up with the notoriously fickle Eagles fans shouting for Vick to start.  Home to Green Bay isn't the ideal start for him.

Yeah Green Bay are real dark horses this year. Aaron Rodgers is a fantasy football teams dream QB. I really like Desean Jackson, will never forget the game last year against Chicago, it was a Sunday Night (1am) game and i was waiting on the Eagles -3.5 for a £70 4 team handicap acca, he catches a deep pass and is gone, he crosses into the endzone doing his best Usain Bolt impression and drops the ball at the 1 yard line lol. Luckily they got the TD and won the game by 4.

Yeah i agree with you, Bradford looks a real star in the making and Stephen Jackson is a beast. I dont know why Arizona released Leinart as he does the fundamentals well he just doesnt have the cannon arm which is why he will always be a back up QB. Derek Anderson is very overrated imo.

Can't figure out how you got Peterson and Brees as they've both been going in the 1st round of all the drafts (mock and real) I've taken part in.  You must have been 1st or 2nd up to get Peterson, so am surprised that Brees was still there in the second.

You got a real good RB in Ryan Matthews he should accumulate alot of points in a weak division. If you had 1st pick why didnt you go with Johnson 1st?

we told him every time ur RB fumbles it you get bonus points and he believed it!  so peterson was the obvious choice!

I hear glue is allowed in the league this year though.

Good chance of a winning season, fighting chance to win a weak division

As you say 49ers have been in the doldrums for ages but have been restocking in the draft for the last few and in Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis have players who are near the best around at their positions

Seattle and the Rams are rebuilding, Arizona look a bit weaker so there are chances

the weakness remains QB....but it does Arizona's too

Should be a fun season

2. Pats   9 wins; no wildcard berth
3. Bills   5 wins
4. Jets   5 wins; sweeped by the Fins and Pats, embarassed at home by Buffalo on 2nd Jan to finish last.

Hoping Peterson is back to his best and doesn't put the ball on the floor multiple times like he was doing end of last season. As he is a truly awesome RB to watch.

Going to have a crack at weekly bets, money where my mouth is.

Starting Bank 100 points

These were placed on Betfair on Wednesday, prices therefore as of then. They are all about value, not favourites.

NFL Week 1

Sunday night

Washington at home to Dallas    Washington back at 2.7 2 points. Based off these games always being very close, and Dallas having 2 of the 5 OL starters out and not likely to be in synch to click offensively. Think its an even money game priced with the home team a big underdog.

Sunday

St Louis at home to Arizona Back St Louis at 2.52 1 point

Just a tickle, my feeling being the Cardinals may struggle this year but be priced like last year's team in the early weeks. Minus Boldin, and with Anderson at QB, I don't think they are the points scorers they were. Of course the Rams have been horrible for three years, but should be pulling themseleves off up the floor this year with a franchise quarterback told to give the ball to Stephen Jackson and watch...

Both of these are early season "revert to mean" games backing the underdog at home, both underdogs should be improving teams.

The NFL tends to "revert to mean" as the poorest teams draft the best players the year after, and often change coaching set ups... yet the early season games are priced on last year's form. Underdog results are common in Weeks 1-5.

Sunday

Cinncinati at New England. Back Cinn at 2.84 5 points

Cleveland at Tampa Back Cleveland at 2.24 2 points

Both are underdog value bets

The first is based on Cincinnati having a) a tough defence including an unknown superstar corner in leon Hall and b) NE having a very young secondary and Cincy having a good QB/receivers to score points. This is not so much about Owens more that alongside Ochocinco there is now a young talented Possession receiver, Jordan Shipley, and a first Round Tight End, Jermaine Gresham to give Palmer weapons.

I like the match up against the Patriots weakness. 2.84 more than reflects the difficulty in going to Foxboro

Cleveland and Tampa were both shocking last year. Tampa Bay wouldn't be odds-on against 11 randoms from the Luton G imo, yet are here. Both rosters short of talent but what Cleveland do have is a talented OL with Joe Thomas and Alex Mack to keep the workmanlike Delhomme upright to nick this one.

My bet of the week is Cincy at 2.84

New Bank 90 points, 10 points in play

Title: Re: NFL 2010
Post by: stonecoldkiller on September 10, 2010, 05:46:28 PM
Well it was'nt the best start to the season but still a very intriguing game, this was the lowest scoring Saints  winning performance of the Sean Peyton era stretching back to 2006, i think this game showed a disciplined side to the Saints that did'nt really exist last year, their mantra last year was kinda like, you score 35 we'll score 40 but i liked the D performance last night. I agree with you on the Rams Tight, watching Bradford last year he really did look like a star in the making and i think he will settle into the pro game very naturally they now have the aerial threat to go with Jackson on the ground, Bulger made too many mistakes last year and i think the Falcons will have regressed quite significantly this year with Anderson coming in for Warner, Anderson was a 1 season wonder in Cleveland and i think with the loss of Boldin it will put alot more weight on the shoulders of Larry Fitz someone will need to step up pretty fast to help out Fitzgerald and i cant see that happening right away.

Bears looking good despite a 13-14 scoreline at 1/2 time. Lions scored 2 touchdowns on 2 of the 3 Bears turnovers.

Cutler looking good 1 int on a 13/19 for 263 yd 1/2. Bears Def has limited the Lions to a lot of 3 and outs. Must be the best 3 LB team in the league

Title: Re: NFL 2010
Post by: 77dave on September 13, 2010, 12:27:24 AM
Johnson was "shocked" by the call, saying, "I figure if I got two feet and a knee down, to me that is a catch that's why I got up and took off," he said.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said the officials got it right.

"The rule is if you're going to the ground in the process of making the catch you need to finish with the football," he said. "He didn't finish with the football. He was [aware] he was trying to come down with it, he had one hand to keep it away from the other guy, he is trying to get his feet down and go to a knee it wasn't like he was trying to flip it to the official or anything. That's what it is."

TBF i cant see how the 2nd Lions TD was given, the ref on the field said it didnt cross the line. Went to booth review and they said it cross the line, when it was clearly short.

Good old technology

Pity the fins only have 1 quality receiver, as against the Jets they just stick Revis on Marshall.

Think the Ravens are making the Jets look worse than they are, they match up well with a quality defence and a good receiving core to expose the Jets secondary.

Crappy old start, but got close with Rams and Browns, under a score away from both winning

New Bank because of Washington, sigh 95.4

Lots of big prices this week

NYG at Indy at 3.25 on Sunday night is tempting

Are Atlanta really 1.35 against Arizona (3.55) at home? Probably not. 1.8 is the right price I think

Are Detroit really 3.25 at home to Philly (1.4)?

Passing glances at Miami 3.4 and Seattle 2.68 too

One bet though, St Louis, who I am convinced are a turn-round team 2.78 at Oakland 5 points. It's an even money game to me.

I think Detroit would definitely be value at that price, given Philly's injury crisis, if it wasn't for the fact that Stafford is out so they're also going with a No 2 QB.  This must also surely reduce Megatron's effectiveness somewhat too.

Kolb is definitely out on Sunday so Vick will start.  He was outstanding last week chasing a lost cause, but he's not a natural West Coast offence QB so will be interesting to see how he plays.

Overall I think Stafford is a bigger loss than Kolb (and Bradley and Weaver.....).

Still a big price though for a home team, especially if they're still fired up over last week's controversy.

Agree on St Louis and Seattle, not sure about NYG though.

Big news in Philly:  Michael Vick is now the starting QB for the season ahead of Kevin Kolb.

Very surprised that Andy Reid has done this, given the amount of faith he's shown to Kolb, but he's admitted that he can't ignore Vick's outstanding form in the last two games.

If he's available in your Fantasy league, I'd be sticking in a waiver claim pretty sharpish.

It's one of those where you have to cancel it if you don't want to take up the offer (free to 30th Sep), but it's enough for me to give it a go.  I like the idea of trying it out first as have concerns as to reliability of connection, etc.

I think robbed is a very harsh term.

The Packers indisicpine was a big part of it so have to blame themselves a lot

Penalties 18-152 5-38
Turnovers 2 1

GB gave up their most penalties in a match in 40 years, giving up 150 yrds of pens in a game you cant expect to win

Same as against the Cowboys, Chicago won the penalties and turnover war and thats why they won.

2nd half Defence is the reason Chicago are 3-0. They gave up 2 FGs against the Lions. No points against the Cowboys and 1 TD v GB.

Some of the penalties were very very marginal.

They would not have been called againt the Pack at Lambeau.

Finley is an absolute beast and Rodgers seems to have matured into one of the top 5 QBs in the league.

The good thing about the result is I can get a bigger price on Green Bay for the division.

Dont get me wrong i think GB are a great team and my tip for the NFC.

Kyle Orton the day before.

It must be the rule changes which have stopped defenses blasting QBs which means they are more confident in the pocket, because there are more "quality" QBs in the league today than in my memory of the game.

Without even thinking: Both Mannings, Brady, Rodgers, Favre, Cutler, Ryan, Brees, McNabb, Schaub, Romo, Rothlesberger, Palmer and Rivers are all genuine elite QBs.

Used to be 3 or 4 per generation. Now its nearly half the starters.

I think Stafford has the tools to be a top QB but like David Carr and JP Losman in other places he has no chance because his O line cannot protect him.

Title: Re: NFL 2010
Post by: TightEnd on September 29, 2010, 07:04:36 PM
Flacco could be, less natural talent than some others but the sheer efficiency of his team year after year will make him look good

Stafford and Sanchez yes. Sanchez on the way. Stafford and Bradford will depend on how well they are protected. Both No 1 picks so it would suggest they have a shot. Much like Peyton Manning when he was drafted by a no hope franchise the Colts, will depend what they surround their QB with

Henne no, McCoy or Tebow too early to say

A lot of franchise qbs at the moment for two reasons I feel

a) has been mentioned, they are protected like never before and therefore are generally more durable and more confident

b) the changes in the rules to accentuate the passing game, making it tougher for defensive backs to defend by contact etc. Back in the old days cornerbacks could literally mug WRs at the line and all the way down the field making big numbers much trickier to achieve

b) in particular is responsible for stellar numbers which over time is meaning the stats from the modern qbs are eclipsiing those from past eras

It's only Marino and Elway (and Favre, of corse)  whose stats are yet to be overtaken by the best 10 in the modern era, and now Manning is up there and about to go top on most categories

As a Bears fan its tough to say but I think the Pack beat themselves at no point did I think we stopped their offense rather they made mistakes that stopped themselves.

That said the packers indiscipline was astounding , I can think of only two that was a marginal one being  false start, the second being rodgers intentional grounding however that can be offset by the fact I spotted two blatant holding calls by the packers that were not picked up, also factor in completely bonehead plays such as the upending of forte clearly after the whistle had blown.

That said the Bears did enough to win.

Im think the packers will still take the division and that having to chase Chicago will help them focus on eliminating stupid plays and make them a better team.

as for the future stud Qbs Bradford and Stafford should be in the mix as these two teams wont be cellar dwellers for much longer.

Anyone else going to Wembley on the 31st October?
There is a change to the tailgate party arrangements:

"The 2010 Tailgate Party will be different from previous years, with access open to all game ticket holders, meaning that you do not need to apply in advance to be able to attend. A new location gives the event much more space, and means that you can party pre-game in the shadow of the Wembley arch."

Must admit that I thought we were getting two top teams this year but based on the season so far it is more like West Ham v Wolves.  :)

1st year i will miss it as i come back from Magaluf the day of the game, cant say i am too bothered as it is two mediocre teams playing that i have no interest fanwise, is it a scary thought that the Seahawks could potentially be favourites for this?

What do you think of the next generation coming through.

Can you see the likes of Flacco, Henne, Sanchez, Stafford, McCoy and Braford making it to the elite section

The 2011 draft class is reported to be very QB rich, so there should be a few more names to add next season.  Jake Locker is the one I keep hearing about most and could potentially have been a high draft pick in 2010, but opted to stay on for his Senior year.

1 name to watch out for in the 2011 draft, Denard Robinson, QB of Michigan. Top 3 draft pick for sure.

1 mediocre team and the BRONCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS

There are always twists and turns in an NFL season, but I'm quite happy for people to write off Denver after just 3 weeks. Makes it sweeter if we do go deep in the playoffs, can look back on thread in the middle of January and have big belly laughs.

Gonna watch in an hour. Mike Carlson is a legend, easily the best analyst to grace american football in this country and better than most of his US counterparts. I prefer him to the majority of the US analysis, he really knows his stuff.

I couldn't believe sky moved away from him, such a massive fk up.

Looking forward to watching it, plenty of 1980's Dan Marino ftw. He remains my biggest childhoold star.

So looking forward to Eagles vs McNabbskins tonight, especially now that Vick is the starting QB.  Really hope McNabb gets a decent reception from the Eagles fans, but not expecting it to happen.

Better still, my 'AFC team', the Ravens, are the early Sky game too, even if it is likely to be a 12 point smashmouth defensive battle vs the Steelers.

NFL heaven tonight for this particular Sheriff!

Eagles' live TV curse strikes again.  They were terrible last night on both sides of the ball.  Portis and Torain seemed to be running through the D-line at will.

Losing Vick was a blow as Kolb didn't look great.  It's unfortunate for him that he's going to have to learn his trade in front of notoriously impatient home fans.  Can't imagine a harder place for a new QB to play.

Relieved to see McNabb get a good reception in the pre-game though.  Philly fans might have booed Santa Claus but they at least acknowledged the best QB in their history.

Belicheck is a bit like Sir Alex over here

Knows a good time to get rid

He got Moss for a 4th 4 years ago and has got 50 odd games and a couple of dozen of touchdowns out of him.

Now he trades him for a rd at 33yo, to a team prepared to pay up a bit because it needs a WR badly witrh Rice out injured and Favre on his last legs (again)

Did similar with star defensive player Seymour two years ago

1st round draft pick, six seasons on shifts him to Oakland for a 1st round draft pick, since when Seymour has underperformed

Time will tell

a) he's not wrong often and

b) In next years draft Patriots now have 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4 to choose young new talent, way more picks than any other team

Seymour certainly has'nt underperformed since he left tighty, he got the franchise tag from the raiders this year.

Post by: TightEnd on October 06, 2010, 07:20:09 PM
Not because of his play though

He wouldn't sign a long term deal when he was traded against his will, so the Raiders HAD to franchise him rather than lose him, which would have been a bit stupid given they'd just forkd out a first round pick on him. Still a good player but not a great player any more.

You can have 10/1 with me.

Virtually impossible they go winless, huge amount of talkent, plus the easiest division in the NFL.

LOL Keith.....any 1/16 they win a game????

Joking apart the league seems more equal this season than I have ever seen and as such I would be pretty amazed if any team went winless and they have a pretty good spot this week against Oakland which I would imagine they will be 5 or 6 point faves for and then again when they come off of their bye week against the Rams if they are still winless then.

Niners wont go winless they have lost 3 close games against decent teams (falcons/Eagles/Saints) and are improving , their are much worse teams in the league Bills would be my favourite to go winless

Cromatie was a real problem in San Diego, not the brightest and in personal hot water a lot

they let him go. What the Jets DB coach Dennis Thurman has done with him, and the development of Revis into the best around, is nothing short of brilliant

Remember the name, likely to be a head coach sooner rather than later.

to quote Wiki

Coaching career

He made his NFL coaching debut with the Arizona Cardinals, coaching defensive backs for two seasons (1988–89).

He is currently the New York Jets secondary coach and has been coaching with various teams since 1988.

Thurman was part of the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff from 2002 to 2008.

He coached from 1993 to 2000 for his alma mater, the USC Trojans where he mentored future NFLers Chris Cash, Kris Richard, Daylon McCutcheon, Brian Kelly and Troy Polamalu.

there were some shocking schoolboy clock management errors made by the jets last night. commentary highlighted sanchez/ryan's mistakes approaching 2 minutes but they didn't mention what I thought was the worst.

why the hell did lowery run his intercept in for a td? when you're leading a game with one minute left against a team with no timeouts you don't give them possession, just run out of bounds, let sanchez take a knee twice and it's game over. what if we'd missed the pat? then you're giving favre the ball in a one possession game

surely players should be aware of this or am I missing something?

the reason I ask if I was missing something is that the commentators didn't mention it

it was really annoying as I was celebrating the win and then watched us score so had to uncelebrate. it's really odd when your team scoring is a bad thing

quite of few of these instances around

say you are losing by less than a score, say 24-20 with 3 minutes to go

You have 4th down and long, way outside FG range so FG and onside kick not a possibility

Instead of punting it, give away a safety by taking a knee in your endzone asap, lose two points

Get the ball back from the kick off with time to score 7 points and overturn a 26-20 deficit

Coaches never do it

Title: Re: NFL 2010
Post by: smileriraq on October 12, 2010, 02:48:42 PM
Um think you misunderstand the rules

If you give away the safety you have to kick off the ball from your 20 yard line so you wont get possession straight away

Um think you misunderstand the rules

damn that's right

I'm thinking of something like "concede a touchdown asap and get the ball back" then, when there is enough time to get the ball once, but not for both sides to get it

i.e you are losing 21-20 with 1 min to go, let them score - 28-20 down, score to take it to 28-28 (2 point conv)

or give them the ball and the clock runs down

Title: Re: NFL 2010

I see what you mean but what will happen the team you "let" score will just run up and down the 1 yard line waiting to be tackled which will waste more time

Brian westbrook did it against Dallas (I think) a few years ago he could easily have scored but elected to stop shy at the 1 yard line and in the process killed lots of fantasy teams who had westbrook in their line up

I remember that

I'm not explaining it well, definitely have been instances of clock management by doing the opposite of the normal right thing- scoring points and not conceding points

Title: Re: NFL 2010
Post by: Longy on October 12, 2010, 03:11:21 PM
Clock management/ mathematically correct decision making is deffo poor in the NFL. It is probably the one thing that people on here would be a lot better at, as poker players that kind of stuff is part of the game we play.

I often follow the games on 2p2 and they are constantly about this . Belichick is about the only one I see consistently make "good" decisions in these spots, like his famous "go for it" on 4th down last year against the Colts.

Strange it hasn't been looked at more by NFL teams as mathematical analysis in Baseball is a pretty big thing these days.

Title: Re: NFL 2010
Post by: gatso on October 12, 2010, 03:17:26 PM
there's a case for taking the safety if you lead by 3, are on your own 1 yard line, the clocks nearly run out and you are playing into a strong wind where punting might give your opponent a fair catch in free kick range

a quick google tells me no-one's kicked a freekick successfully in the nfl since 76 though so I doubt this one's in coaches' minds too often

Correct me if I'm wrong but didnt the same thing happen in the Raiders/Chargers match on Sunday night.
Raiders led by 1 when they intercepted and ran back for a touchdown with 58 seconds left on the clock.  They got the PAT to lead by 8 but the Chargers got the ball back.
I thought at the time wouldnt they have been better just running out of bounds and winning the match by one but the commentators didnt mention it!

Exactly also figure into the equation these guys get paid bonuses based on hard stats , its also a statement of intent whilst smart clock management will help you win the game sometimes you can be too smart and it bites you in the arse , players still have pride and playing about so your defense doesnt have to face the offense again doesnt show a lot of faith from your HC and sometimes what gets good teams through is the faith between a coach and his players.

I understand whats been said and there are some valid points but end of the day you get an opportunity to score with the adrenalin flowing its hard for you to overcome the instincts that have been drilled into you over a period of years

We have brought in Al Harris from Green Bay as well.

I am going on Sunday to the game (and Thursday) thought I would get that brag while I am here.

Thanks for the offer.

What do you think this does to Marshall's fantasy value? He hasn't really done much so i cant decide

From what I've seen so far this year, Marshall hasn't been much use to anyone all season.

I doubt this will make much difference, Miami will always be run first wih this coach.

Must admit it is all a bit of a mystery to me what is wrong with their pass offence.  They have one of the best offensive lines in the league and Henne has routinely had 3 or 4 seconds on the ball to pick his passes so either the receivers are no good or he is making bad decisions.  Marshall is very highly rated by everyone in South florida but I kinda agree with Keith that he hasn't been that good this year.  be very interesting to see if Pennington can improve them.

Pretty sure this was just because if you bring in 3rd string qb in 3rd quarter or before then he has to stay in for rest of game and they weren't sure how badly Henne was hurt.  There were only like 50 secs left in 3q.

It was pretty com us just running wildcat for a drive and Pennington lasting all of 2 plays. Thigpen I think is pretty good for a 3rd string qb, though hoping one of the Chad's is fit for Thursday.

Pretty big win, we have a softer 2nd half of the schedule lets hope 10-6 is good enough for the playoffs as I think will struggle to get to 11-5.

Rumours are that Pennington's probably done for good (as in career) pretty sad.

We could be in a whole world of trouble here if Henne's diagnosis is bad. We need to get another qb in to at least back up for Thigpen. Jamarcus Russel anyone?

Bringing in Patrick Ramsey and Chris Simms off the street for a look see. Culpepper's name has been circulating too. All grim options but it is what it is when you get that unlucky at QB all of a sudden

As it is with Thigpen 1 and Ronnie Brown 2 at QB, things look pretty tough in the division Miami are in but fortunately the style of the offense allows for a "game manager" to hand the ball off, not do anything fancy and try and keep the team in it as Miami have a decent defense alongside

Meanwhile at 1-7 at with Jason Garrett at Head Coach the Cowboys go and stuff the Giants in their new stadium. Daft game. I think I'd rather go 1-15 and pick top three in the draft, but we can't even do that lol

Simms and Ramsey are pretty tough options for sure but I quite like the idea of Culpepper....he has a good arm and with their O line he should be relatively well protected.

I'm nervous that the Eagles are such strong favourites in this game (-3.5), given that its a divisional game, away from home against a side that has beaten us already this season.

Couple that with the surprising Cowboys result last night giving us a chance to top the division then it's a nailed-on cert that the Redskins will win, regardless of what common-sense tells you.

In the wake of injuries to their quarterbacking options, Miami signed Patrick Ramsey. The Dolphins also tried out but declined to sign JaMarcus Russell, the former No. 1 overall pick who was a bust with Oakland. ... In addition to Ramsey and Russell, the Dolphins tried out three other quarterbacks Monday: J.T. O'Sullivan, who has played little in stints with 10 NFL teams; Tom Brandstater, a 2009 sixth-round pick for Denver out of Fresno State; and Tommy Grady, an Arena League quarterback from Utah who has worked out for the Dolphins multiple times this year.

I don't like after timing, but only just saw this...

Thigpen was impressive when he had no time to think, he never expected to get in the game last week, and just played naturally.

With all week to think about starting I hoped for a different display. From his KC days he was jumpy and against Chicagos pass D I didn't expect him to get much going and Miami would be forced to run.

I liked the matchup of Miami's pass d v Cutler and Hester and Knox too. Thought Forte would be a bigger part of the offense this week.

Not aftertiming at all.  Was a very good call by you.  I expected the impotent run game from Miami but thought Thigpen would step up to the challenge....so far his decision making has looked like that of a man who can't handle pressure at all.  He still has time I suppose.  The O line hasn't been anything as ood as usual for the Dolphins though although losing two centers is about as bad an injury crisis as you can get for an O line.  be interesting to see how Thigpen performs with Berger back or even Procter who apparently he practises with anyway.

I actually don't think Thigpen has played that badly.

I think it's been an extremel poor called game by the Miami coaches, Thigpen is very athletic, why didn't they roll him out and give more chance to use his strengths, running the ball when noone is open instead of keeping him in the pocket with a target on his back.

And the O line has been dreadful even allowing for injuries.

Sigh that was pretty abject. I really don't know what we are trying to do as an offence, this is has been the theme all season before the injuries. We should be a T.O.P team who just grind ppl down, especially at home where it is always warm therefore opposing D's wear out.

We seem to have gone away from the run all season and we should be a run first offence. The o-line just doesn't see anywhere near as good run blocking as the previous two seasons.

I can't blame Thigpen, he is a 3rd string QB who seemed to get little or no time to execute. Oh and as for Marshall he needs to be sorted out, his petulance has led to 2 ridic pens in back to back games.

Think that is our season pretty much done for, expect us to finish 8-8 (we have some soft home games).

We can only hope, pretty sure we won't see Favre next season. We might not see much more of him this season, deffo an arguement for giving Tavaris Jackson a run out to see if he can cut it for next season.

Well he was always going to start under Childress after getting a pay hike, if they want to rebuild for the future then they must start now as this season is done, really cant see them dropping him though sadly.

For the 1st time in years, it looks like the NFC is the stronger conference, its going to be hard to come out that conference, i personally like GB to come out that side. Its a very, very, very open year though, any one of 12 teams could concievably win it this year.

Really! Give me the AFC any time.

Pats, Steelers, Jets, Ravens, Colts and Chargers are all good teams.

AFC currently 25-20 up in interconference games.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this bet up.  Auburn scored 28 points in the second half at Alabama, 56 and 35 versus South Carolina, 65 versus Arkansas and 24 versus LSU all of whom are ranked teams and haven't kept any team to single figures.  They are ranked #1 because of Newton and that Offense.  Oregon are similar having scored 52 versus Stanford who are ranked #4, 53 @ USC and 48 v Arizona.

he 2010 NFL season is so fiercely contested that picking the best game each week is almost impossible. So for the first time Sky Sports viewers will be able to follow all the big plays in the climactic games of the season via the Red Zone.

In Weeks 15 (December 19), 16 and 17, instead of showing just one game in the 6:00 p.m. Sunday time slot, Sky Sports will air the Red Zone channel, which means that viewers will be able to follow approximately 10 games at a time - never missing a single key play. Sky will then show one live game in the 9:00 p.m. slot as usual.

Chargers are a very good team that have been pretty unlucky this year although the prices reflect that given they are going to have to pretty much win every game for the rest fo the season to win.  Colts has to be a level surely???  I am not sure they even make the playoffs.  Manning looks a shadow of his former self to me and for the first time I can remember there are 4 or 5 QB's I would rather have on my team.  I would happily lay 8/13 that is best them to win the division.

Title: Re: NFL 2010

Ended up break even.

Started off with a £50 treble on Ravens -1.5, Miami -1.5 and Greenbay - 1.5 (alternative nitty 4/6 handicaps as don't like 3.5 as a line usually)
Miami fucked me over big style going from 10 points up to 7 down in 3 minutes deep into the 4th quarter.

Then had a tilt £50 double on Colts -1.5 and Chargers -6. This went well when Chargers lost to Cincy whom my sources had told me had no offence without TO and CO when in fact it looks now like they were the ones disrupting the harmony.

Then had a get out £110 single on Greenbay - 3.5 @ 10/11. I wish i got involved in some alternative handicaps like -7.5 and -12.5 too as i was pretty confident in that one as obviously i'm a Giants fan myself and i know we are hapless.

jets just picked up an offside penalty on 1st and 10, that's a 5 yard penalty still first down so how can the next play be 1st and 13?

Erm it was 2nd and 8, which became 2nd and 13!

There are some penalties which are enforced at the spot of the foul instead of the line of scrimmage, not false starts though.

If they committed a false penalty at their own 6 yd line, it would be half the distance to the goaline instead of a 5 yd penalty.

Then it would be 1st and 13.

Yes, but neither are blazing speed. When it came down to the crunch Steelers blitzed from everywhere as they did not fear Ravens speed on the outside.

Boldin's a possession guy, making it so galling that he made that bad drop. Ravens a really good team but more speed in the passing game makes them that much better

I think the window of opportunity just slammed shut with that loss.

Ages:

Ed Reed 32
Ray Lewis 35
Derrick Mason 37
TJ Houshmandzadeh 33
Kelly Gregg 34

That's alot of talent coming to the end of their career, especially if next season is not going to happen.

I agree

Baltimore have drafted tremendous young talent on the OL and DL in the last 3 years..Oher, Yanda, Ngata and Suggs is a brilliant pass rusher...but ageing in the secondary and the skill positions as you say

It's what makes it a great sport, all the teams have to constantly rebuilld and refresh. Ravens have to do a big one now whilst the likes of Kansas etc are set to have a run having had 4-5 years of high draft picks to restock

Must be a complete headcase if a team so short of speed on the outside won't use him, ever

I think Alex Smith could have been a great QB.

He is super intelligent, athletic and has a great arm.

If he had the 2-3 seasons on the bench learning behind Favre or someone similar he could have been all pro I reckon.

this is true

I only mention that he went 22nd as he was predicted for ages to be be drafted first, went to the draft in NY aand sat there very publically, cameras watching his discomfort while team after team passed him up. Eventually GB who with Favre had no immediate need for a QB took him. That's forward planning, which 5 years later could well take them all the way

Interesting prices. The Patriots are 2.3 to win v NYJ at half-time but can still be laid at 4.5 to win the Super Bowl. That would mean they are 2/5 to beat Pittsburgh if going through and then 2/5 to beat either Green Bay, who are currently shorter than them in the outrights, or Chicago in the biggun. Something ain't right here.

Meanwhile

Criticism of Cutler mounts

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 23, 2011, 7:30 PM EST

Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher doesn’t want to hear any criticism of Jay Cutler for sitting out the second half of the NFC Championship Game with a knee injury. So Urlacher better avoid any large gatherings of NFL players — because plenty of players are questioning Cutler’s toughness.

Here’s a sample of what some current and former NFL players said on Twitter as they watched Culter stand on the sideline while the Bears lost to the Packers:

* Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew wrote, “All I’m saying is that he can finish the game on a hurt knee… I played the whole season on one.”

* Former NFL lineman and current ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth wrote, “As a guy how had 20 knee surgeries you’d have to drag me out on a stretcher to Leave a championship game!”

* Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett wrote, “If I’m on chicago team jay cutler has to wait till me and the team shower get dressed and leave before he comes in the locker room!”

* Jaguars linebacker Kirk Morrison wrote, “Jay Cutler better go put some Tussin on that knee and get back out there.”

* Deion Sanders wrote, “Im telling u in the playoffs u must drag me off the field. All the medicine in pro lockerooms this dude comes out! I apologize bear fans! . . . Folks i never question a players injury but i do question a players heart.

Even one of Cutler’s fellow quarterbacks, Oakland’s Bruce Gradkowski, got in on the action, writing that he once played with two torn MCLs and adding, “Is cutler still ur starter next year? Did the players give up on him?”

Oh, and in Chicago, they’re already burning Cutler jerseys.

Anyone got any thoughts on a Superbowl line???  If I was setting it I am thinking something along the lines of GB-2.5 5/6????  Fancy backing the Packers at anything better than that.

sigh took steelers -9.5 in that.  should be a good one a week sunday though.

A classic old school superbowl on the way

Basically a pick-em, I'd guess they'd set the line Packers -2

I like the Steelers, an awesome defence

I would like the Steelers too but I can't have them on my mind if Pouncey doesn't make it.  Centers are the most underrated players in the NFL....even with two weeks to prepare with another center I think Packers go off as 3 point faves without him....prob closer to pick em with him playing.

oioiii, best outcome imo. Packers Steelers should be decent.

Have abs no idea about the outcome, will prob just get involved on Superbowl Sundayyyyyyyyyy when bolloxed.

A big loss for sure. It's an incredibly tight game to call. In the end, I just think Steelers defence is a bit more experienced. That said Matthews and Raji are beasts.

lolz, raji the fattest man in the game scores. has anyone ever run a td in slower? it was like watching william perry in slow motion

The skill in a 338lb man being able to drop back into coverage and intercept was incredible. So few Nose tackles can drop back. He's a real game changer.

Jets gg yet?

Been smashed in the mouth, but this will be a one score game at the end

suppose you could be right if there's a way of scoring that's worth about 30 points

the only good thing to come from this game is flushy might stop going on about the jets once we're out

think I may go to bed at 1/2 time

wow, I take that back rich, you were spot on, sanchez is incredible and would've won the game if it wasn't for some shocking play calling on the last series before the safety

Title: Re: NFL 2010
Post by: TightEnd on January 24, 2011, 05:17:57 PM
this is true, they attempted two passes at 1st and goal from the 2 that were daft. Run it 3 times around the edge not through the middle and I think you get in

Sanchez is terrible because he can't pass obv the play calling is bad but that doesnt stop him being bad.

Good 2 results at least now the SB will be good, was dreading the bears or jets getting in.

He had the worst completion % of starters in the league, the only players with worse QB ratings were Hasslebeck, Farve and Anderson.

We dopped Henne with just Pennington as a backup for gods sake, and he was doing better!

Last season i thought the jets were the most underrated team in the NFL, this season they are the most overrated. Loads more praise and are far worse.

I would take Sanchez over Henne, then again I would take about 30 qb's round the league over Henne. What I have seen of Sanchez is that he is very inconsistent, sometime he looks geniunely comptent and other times he is beyond terrible.

a young player, playing high pressure games very early in his career. Bound to be inconsistent. I see a tough temperament though, and a likely star

The Jets were virtually ready before he arrived, unlike most teams where the young star quarterbacks get drafted early and then teams get built round them eg Bradford at the Rams, Ryan at the Falcons etc

the likes of Ryan and Bradford will have their growing pains in years 1 and 2 regular season games. Sanchez has had his in play off games in years 1 and 2. Not that usual.

He was very mixed. However he's a young player, and he's tough. Played injured a lot

He's not a top QB yet, but he'll be a hell of player when he is more consistent

One good thing for me about the NFL is that I want around 10 of the 32 teams to just fking die so there's usually still some interest for me in the Superbowl, and indeed most regular season games, coz I just root for whoever they're up against.

Go Packers! Die Steelers

Interesting looking prop I quite like the look of.  With Skybet (might be better avail elsewhere) you can bet James Stark Rushing attempts over 16.5 @10/11.  In the post season so far he has had over 20 attempts in every game so far but I like the bet coupled with his rushing yards under 50.5@10/11.  Steelers have the best rush defense in league and only average 52.5 yards as a team.  Could easily see both sides of this winning.

Main bet for tonight the over/under on how long Christina Aguilera will hold the word/note "brave" during national anthem is 6 seconds. I'm on the overs

I usually stay up till half-time before going to bed, but won't be able to make prob more than a quarter tonight due to having to get up earlier for work nowadays.

I would therefore like to thank the NFL for booking the worst musical act in the world for the half-time show this year.

Ha!

A mate asked my opinion on this last night, now I know why.

I can't honestly say I have read as many articles as I should about the dispute, but the prices I came up with were:

yes 9/4
no 1/3

I wouldn't bet on my opinion though, I don't know enough.
