Fed up of wracking my brains for inspiration of what great music tunes to listen to on youtube - and I'm always sure theres a great tune I've forgotten about. Surely other people have the same problem? I propose members add youtube clip of what they deem to be one of the greatest tunes of all time. Perhaps even a little story about any memories the song evokes.

I got outta Iraq for a couple of weeks at the start of Aug 05 and covered a mates job in Qatar. This was awesome as a) I was getting mortared b) I could drink. There were a few bars, but this one night I ended up in the Ozzie bar. Didn't know it but Brits weren't allowed in. Me n my mucker got collared by their Sergeant Major, but basically sweet talked into letting us stay. He was a massive Floyd fan and also well into cricket. They were 1 - 0 up in the Ashes and was loving rubbing our noses in it. For the next week or so our routine was hit the bar early to catch up with the 2nd test (gloating), get smashed then chill into the early hours on sofas in the middle of the desert drinking beers, appreciating Floyd and looking up at the sky :-)

Ive thought about starting a thread like this for ages! Ive always thought that peoples tastes are so diverse it just doesnt work.

BUT.............. i think if people choose 1 song, maybe it does........................... besides you have started it now!

Mine ( and although I dont like the premise of "best song ever" as I believe that music is dependant on mood, surroundings etc), I have often thought if someone asked me could I have this as my favourite song ever, I could see no reason why I wouldnt!

The back story of me finding this song isnt great, so ill leave it out. But lets just saying finding this song changed my life..........................

I know it wont be everyones cup of tea, the band certainly arent mine, but it really is all about the lyrics.

Classic piece of metal.

First heard when in my late teens. Perfect song for mardy teenagers really. But listened to it regularly since. I just love the song, for some reason. Builds up so well, gets so angry, but it's got a great melody for such a powerful song. The opening guitar solo is superb, then the drums kick in and it builds and builds.

It's also a great test of an audio system; it's got great dynamic range and variety.

There is the official video to this on youtube as well, but it's got some voiceover bits, which suit the video, but I prefer the original.

I used to (still am really) a huge Wonderstuff fan, been to see them all over the place. After Never Loved Elvis was realeased,  whenever we used to set off to see gigs, we'd always stick this track on as the first song to see us off.    Great times that seem an age ago now.  Can't remember what we did before this album but always remember setting off to this.  This video for Mission Drive is from the first time I saw it live at Walsall in 1991, I'm in the mosh pit somewhere.

A rare situ imo where I prefer a cover version to the orig. Korn are immense though

OP made me smile a bit cos mine was 'Drinking a G&T on a hotel roof in Doha, Qatar listening to the just-released 'Blur' by Blur (MOR and Country Sad especially). 'It's just a small job, 3 days max, a tiny rig with really novel technology' my boss had said. 7 weeks later, still there fml'.

Don't think I've ever had a 'favourite song', and I tend to play an album to death for a few days before swapping.

One album has been a constant throughout my life though and I never get tired of it, so probably most appropriate for this thread.  it's a classic, pop pickers.

when I lived away from England for the first time, this song reminded me of home and brought me comfort in difficult times.

A homage to Paul Simon, the song(episode of their show) is about a New Zealander that sleeps with an Aussie which is what the first few seconds of the vid are about and then reminisces about his past loves.

I think this might have won an Emmy, or was nominated.

Cool cool, music is by far my favourite art! It can draw me out of a lull and inspire/motivate me, no questions. Would love to see some gems posted. So far boshi's pick gets my mind racing back to yesteryear and happy times from such a melancholic song. My nephew Peter, 5. Went up to see my sis totally randomly, I had other stuff to do but something persuaded me to endure the 2 hour drive. Sadly my doorbell pressing woke him up lol. She brought him into the living room, had a nice chat, something wasn't quite right though. His eyes rolled up, 2 mins later he's on the bathroom floor, cold towels. 5 mins later, ambulance. 10 mins later hospital bed, I think they tried about 6 different 'experts', refused to stop fitting. Apparently he got 'critical', was just a teeny wee bit away at all times. Will never forget the sight of him lying there before the intubation (belly swells enormously after constant fitting), he had a ton of drugs already but nothing was working. Yet another medic in civvies paged away from his dinner strolled in, took a look at Peter, looked through the sheet, and demanded a great big vial of some drug. Pulled him out of it, was really touch and go. Right as rain now, 6 years on. According to the main doc, he was probably fitting and going to die in his sleep, when the doorbell woke him up.

Just left that movie on the shelf for ages, looked terrible from the description, thought it was going to be a flash, special-effects driven, plot/character empty piece of drivel.
So so wrong. I can relate the OST there to different bits of the movie, makes me shudder. Powerful, frightening, beautiful, effective.

I loved the song so much I looked up some of their other stuff on youtube and ended up buying the CD!  In your shirt was written by Jamie (the lead singer) 12 months after splitting up with Jake who was the love of his life, 6 months later they got back together and have been for 10 years - so a happy ending. I only know this as I caught an interview with him on a session they did for Radio 2 a little while ago. A quirky but brilliant original bunch of musicians IMO.

A little off genre than the current trend, but whilst getting ready for work today I was listening to a Retro Mix(Paul Taylor club night originating in Burnley and used to pack out Tall Trees in its prime)... when the piano hits, oh dear I was dancing like a loon. (same riff from Congress - 40 miles.. another classic)

'Still Fighting It' by Ben Folds is beautiful and bitter-sweet. It is about growing up and fatherhood. And about knowing that the son you love will inherit your flaws and weaknesses and will experience hurt and doubt in his life just like you did. It is also a reminder that your parents had the exact same doubts and fears when you were born, and likely still do.

The first time I heard this song was the day after my first son was born. I cried my eyes out. And I still often cry when I hear it, soft bastard that I am. In particular the second verse gets me every single time: "Good morning son. In twenty years from now, maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers. And I can tell you about today, and how I picked you up and everything changed". Everything really does change when you become a dad.

The video is also lovely. A cynic might consider it sickly sweet and overly sentimental. This isn't a song for cynics.

Machines by Biffy Clyro is a sad song - but also a positive song, full of hope. It is about Simon Neil (the singer/songwriter) putting himself back together after his mum died. A simply beautiful song.

That's two songs I have recommended ITT and both have been of the gentle-beauty variety. Next one is going to be a proper noisy rock song....

My great aunt Mary lived right in the centre of Edinburgh so have always had a fondness for the place and the video captures it pretty well.

Mark E Smith had some short spells in the US but the only place he ever lived and said he loved, outside his native Prestwich, was Edinburgh. So the song and video are a pretty good homage I think

This young lady, Kiesza, is a pretty incredible girl. She was in the army and was recruited for taking up a role as a sniper, because of how good a shot she was. She has done a load of other things before turning to music, too. Must be a summer dancefloor smash or there's something wrong with the world.

Your daughter has excellent taste because she rightly notes that My Love is a belter. No doubt. But it is way more of a Cafe del Mar sunrise tune than a 2am house anthem.

i did say i wasnt a big dance/house/electro fan so i'm not going to get into a song war with someone else when we are all individuals

but this tune is one of my all time favourites, certainly not to everyones taste, but the lyrics and music work very well together in what is essentially a very dark song

i'm a fan of both, but much much prefer the first song to the second, takes me back to my late teens working as a glass collector and knocking off on a thursday night to go to the nightclub 3 doors down for indie night, Doncaster of the 90s, awesome times

Just saw this teamonkey, been away for a few days, not a huge fan of either tbh but prefer song 1,  I did'nt really listen to indie stuff 'til the Oasis/Blur revolution!

<3 Nineties Yorkshire , I had my first proper night out in Wakefield at Rooftop Gardens in about '92, I loved it! Think it closed shortly after but it had been the place to be for a long time,
 My hubby was a fan of B.Y.O. in Doncaster, but it had a bit of a dodgy rep so us good girls didn't go.  ;angel;
