Title: RSQ - The Portsmouth Connection
Post by: MintTrav on September 23, 2012, 06:36:31 PM
Here is your RSQ. I have only taken part in these for a few months, so it is possible that one or more has been asked in the past.

The score for each question is the number of people who give that answer.

The most popular answer is the sheep.

Incorrect answers receive the sheep score plus 5 points.

Lowest score wins.

Using Google is not allowed.

You must pass one question and will receive 0 points for that question.

PM your answers to me by 11pm Wed 26 Sep. The reveal will take place at 8pm on Thurs 27 Sep.

There are fifteen questions in total, starting with a couple of easy ones:

1. A country, outside the UK, which has Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State

2. A seating position at the poker table

3. A character in The Bash Street Kids

4. A type of animal or plant that can live for 100 years

5. An acronym or abbreviation commonly used in dating ads

6.  A country in Central America

7. A change in Shane Warne's appearance since he took up with Liz Hurley

8. A destination (country not accepted) that can be reached by direct ferry from Portsmouth

9. Someone who won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, who was not representing UK/GBR or USA

10. A famous person who is or was missing a body part (not including common removals like appendix or tonsils)

11. A junction on the M27

12. Someone who has run unsuccessfully for President of the USA

13. A sport that has been dropped from the Summer Olympics

14. A sexually-transmitted disease

15. Picture Round. Just choose your favourite hat. Or your least favourite. Or the one that you think other people won't pick. Or the one that they think you won't pick. Or the one showing her knockers.

Some great questions, some "interesting"  questions, and the hat one :D

We've also seemed to move to 15 questions as the standard, rather than 10. Which is fine, unless people can't answer more than one question.

Anyway, will enter as it has to be better than Dawn's effort. I use effort in the loosest sense of the word...

Edit: Sigh

With seven entries received, I am surprised at the unanimity on some questions. In particular, four entrants have given the same answer for one question. It is a correct answer, but one I thought unlikely to figure much, if at all. I suppose I shouldn't say which question, in case it somehow gives an advantage to the remaining players.

Just over two days left to finish them off......................time is running out.

If it's Q5, there could be some follow-up questions!

I thought Tighty was only joking about being upset at Laxies biased marking. Alas it would appear that the toys really have left the pram and tighty as seen his arse :(

Win number 10 will have to wait :)

Some of the answers have surprised me. Quite a few of you have out-clevered yourselves by going for the same obscure answers, while the obvious one has remained unused. One of the questions that surprised me was the US Presidential one, where 4 of the first 5 received all went for the same person, who failed to be elected over 50 years ago - and that wasn't the sheep in the end. Another one was the hat question - where most of the votes went to just 2 hats, until a late spurt by one previously unchosen hat, taking 3 of the last 6 entries, narrowed the gap. There is an Ace there though, so everything could swing on the last question.

There are 54 member states of the Commonwealth but, apart from the UK, only 15 of them have The Queen as their Head of State:

Canada
Australia
New Zealand
Jamaica
Barbados
The Bahamas
Grenada
Papua New Guinea
The Solomon Islands
Tuvalu
Saint Lucia
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Belize
Antigua and Barbuda
Saint Kitts and Nevis

Far from this being a historical throwback, most of these have been acquired during her reign. She has been Queen of only Canada, Australia and New Zealand since the start, with the other twelve becoming realms at later stages. Actually, twenty-four countries have become realms during her reign, but twelve of those have subsequently reverted to full independence.

Three countries (South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon) were realms at the start of her reign but are no longer.

"The age of a fish is calculated in much the same way as one works out the age of a tree by counting its rings; most fish have growth rings on their scales known as annuli. This technique was used to estimate the age of Hanako, meaning "flower maid", the world's oldest koi carp, who died in 1977 at the age of 226 years."

Immortal Jellyfish!!!

It regenerates, so has no natural death.

Nothing lives forever. Different types of jellyfish live from a few hours to a few months. The immortal jellyfish reverts to a polyp stage and then reforms as a new jellyfish. In theory, this could go on indefinitely. However, I have rejected it as living to 100 years because:

a) If it is reformed, can it actually be said to be the same creature?

b) the process has only been observed in laboratories; never in the wild so far.

c) No single specimen has been observed for any extended period, so it is not currently possible to estimate the age of an individual, and so even if this species has the potential for immortality, there is no laboratory evidence of many generations surviving from any individual.

d) Even if it has the potential, most potential jellyfish succumb to predation or disease in the plankton stage. An individual would have to pass through this process many hundreds of times to achieve 100 years.

e) Most importantly, there is no example that is known, or even thought, to have lived 100 years.

Humans are animals ffs.  We're primates, and like apes we're animals.  How many times do we have to cover this ffs.

Hanako? LOL. You don't believe that,do you. Carp live to 50-60 years. The only evidence for Hanako being over 200 years old is that it's owner said so. There is no other evidence that I know of. I don't believe that something lived to 4 times as old as it's species usually does.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turritopsis_nutricula

In this process the medusa of the immortal jellyfish is transformed into the polyps of a new polyp colony. First, the umbrella reverts itself and then the tentacles and mesoglea get resorbed. The reverted medusa then attaches itself to the substrate by the end that had been at the opposite end of the umbrella and starts giving rise to new polyps to form the new colony. Theoretically, this process can go on indefinitely, effectively rendering the jellyfish biologically immortal

Ergo, it CAN - it is possible for it to - live for 100 years

Look at 'is ickle faaaace...

Humans who live to be 100 do not have a single atom in their body that is part of the 'original' person.  So, is it the same person?

Yeah those scientists weren't sure whether it was capable of living for over 100 years, so they gave it a name that would keep its possible age unclear.

Oh hang on..

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/01/090130-immortal-jellyfish-swarm.html

Turritopsis typically reproduces the old-fashioned way, by the meeting of free-floating sperm and eggs. And most of the time they die the old-fashioned way too.

But when starvation, physical damage, or other crises arise, "instead of sure death, [Turritopsis] transforms all of its existing cells into a younger state," said study author Maria Pia Miglietta, a researcher at Pennsylvania State University.

The jellyfish turns itself into a bloblike cyst, which then develops into a polyp colony, essentially the first stage in jellyfish life.

The jellyfish's cells are often completely transformed in the process. Muscle cells can become nerve cells or even sperm or eggs.

Through asexual reproduction, the resulting polyp colony can spawn hundreds of genetically identical jellyfish—near perfect copies of the original adult.

This unique approach to hardship may be helping Turritopsis swarms spread throughout the world's oceans, she added.

So that would be identical genetic material, which would be...an ace?

It's very sad. Warne was a rough one-of-the-guys for ever. Now he's a pussy-whipped wimp. Okay, he's healthier, and probably happier and he'll live longer. But is that enough when you no longer have the respect of the boguns.

These are changes I am aware of since he met her. Happy to accept others you have observed.

Weight Loss

You could walk over here and back again before the next question is revealed.

Just to point out that I'm not a complete "see you next tuesday", I considered submitting Eritrea, on the basis that it is in cEnTRAl amERicA.

Thought I'd stick to non-controversial answers, because I'm all about behaving with appropriate levels of decorum.

while we wait here is a true story

Postman Pat's Last Day:

It was Postman Pat's last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same villages and towns.

When he arrived at the first house on his route, he was greeted by the whole family there, who all hugged and congratulated him and sent him on his way with a cheque for £50.

At the second house they presented him an 18-carat gold watch.

The folks at the third house handed him a bottle of 15-year old Scotch whisky.

At the fourth house he was met at the door by a dumb blonde in her lingerie. She took him by the arm and led him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced.

When they went downstairs, the blonde fixed him a full English breakfast: Bacon, Eggs, Sausage & Tomato with freshly squeezed orange juice. As she was pouring him a cup of
steaming coffee, he noticed a quid coin in the saucer.

'All this was just too wonderful for words,' he said, 'but what's the quid for?'

'Well,' said the dumb blonde, 'Last night, I told my husband that today would be your last day and that we should do something special for you'. 'I asked him what I should give you'. He said, 'F**k him. Give him a quid.'

She smiled shyly and said, 'The breakfast was my idea.'

I was merely pointing out that if those others were accepted, then my answer should be accepted too as it encompasses any one of them if you were feeling the need to go that route.

Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport.

Tae kwon doe isn't a demonstration sport.

It's might have been previously, but it isn't now and it was dropped from the Olympics.

So it satisfies the remit of the question, as you didn't say it had to be a full medal sport when it was dropped - just that it was dropped (it was), and it's a sport at the Olympics (it is).

No, there are two sports that come under the term rugby. Rugby league and union. In fact there is 7s rugby too. Only rugby union was dropped.

If you whale them, then tug of war is a correct answer.

How does rugby encompass several sports? You mean Union & League? That's not several.

If Union is the only one that has been in the Olympics, then abbreviating it to Rugby is acceptable in my book.

There isn't one sport, there are several - rugby union and rugby league as well as 7 s variations. Nothing up with that sentence, something up with the quiz master's comprehension though.

Sweetman, make sure you win this by more than six or Dublin is going to be a long trip.

So funny. I was thinking exactly the same.

There will be no jellyfish based discussion on the Ryanair flight lol

i cant believe you are carving this up already

My answer was rugby union, was the answer that's been grouped with mine rugby, or rugby union?

If it was just rugby, then that's not a sport as it encompasses several sports, and isn't a correct answer same as tug of war.

How does rugby encompass several sports? You mean Union & League? That's not several.

If Union is the only one that has been in the Olympics, then abbreviating it to Rugby is acceptable in my book.

There isn't one sport, there are several two - rugby union and rugby league. Nothing up with that sentence, something up with the quiz master's comprehension though.

FYP - but yer right and should get it through imo

Do you know any biochemists who could verify what "keeps its genetic material" means?

Do you know any who could verify what ''certain to be eaten as plankton during one of it's transformations'' means?

No one said that!

Seems like I have to concede. Hopefully you can hear this over the sound of grinding teeth:

Well done, Sweetman.

Thanks for being this week's QM, MintTrav.

Get 'em up by end of tomorrow.  Gives everyone week-end to answer and you can do the reveal on Monday or Tuesday...or whatever suits your schedule.

Nice and watertight questions, please. You don't want any of these pedants dragging the quiz out for an entire night.

The quiz is usually finished 2 hours ago which would have given you time tonight.   rotflmfao

Yeah, luckily the expected row over Guernsey never happened, so we were able to finish early.

Couldn't object to this as apparently her official title is Duke, but I wasn't happy at tug of war being a wrong answer

Previous Olympic Games included sports which are no longer present on the current program, like polo and tug of war. - courtesy of Wiki

Still a CLASSIC reveal though well played Mint, looking forward to you winning another one!!!!!

False alarm, people.
