Please share a NON-POLITICAL unpopular opinion that you hold.

eg Breaking Bad is massively over-rated and you don't see the fuss

eg Mrs Browns Boys is the best comedy on television, now or will ever be

over to you

Strictly Come Dancing is a terrible idea for a TV show, and is not the least bit entertaining.

Small talk is a waste of everyone's time

Also think it's selfish when parents know their child will have a painful or meaningless life and continue on with their pregnancy.

Only found out who he was this summer, when my mate almost fell out of the taxi at the airport.

I'm staggering about like a twat, and I thought he must have spotted his long lost brother!

Was a really nice fella, and having seen a few bits of his shows now, I think he's pretty funny.

That said, I can see why he's going to be marmite, and it probably says more about me that I like him :D

Will you be going out out, when you get to Spain?

It doesn't work like that in 95% of cases. These comedians spend years grinding out the club circuits to get to the panel shows. I do concede that the 'big' comedians have won half the battle before they even come out on stage as people are chomping at the bit to laugh at them.

Along similar lines people who are genetically challenged should not breed with people who are genetically challenged unless they can provide for the genetically challenged child they're almost definitely going to produce.

Note this is not about creating a master race of perfect human beings. If you can provide for your kid then go for it. I don't care what make it is, what colour it is or how much help it needs throughout its life as long as that help is paid for by the two people who brought it in to this world.

Yeah this. I used to go clubbing back in the 'superclub' era (Gatecrasher, Cream and all that) and the fawning over bloody DJs was unbearable. EPL football is no longer worth watching.

It's populated by grossly overpaid & undereducated players who spend as much time learning how to cheat and deceive the referee as they do learning the actual craft skills of the game. Coached by managers who only encourage this kind of behaviour. There is little, if any, true sportsmanlike behaviour in the game. Many so-called professionals don't seem to have a problem inflicting career ending injuries on their fellow professionals.

It's a sport refereed by people who don't actually seem to understand the game, since they are constantly deceived by the diving and various other forms of cheating. The seemingly constantly changing definition of offside rule makes an already impossible task even more difficult to accurately judge. And the good old footy fan continues to insist that referee errors are part of what make the game interesting. Video review is probably decades away.

A sport administered by some of the most incompetent (FA) and corrupt (FIFA) bodies in the history of sport.

Waste of fkn time.

Great era and we were all guilty of falling for the marketing nonsense.  We all paid fortunes to get into the clubs (which all went to the DJ's effectively).  Remember queuing outside in sub zero temps for 2 hours at Progress in Derby in 1994 to see Pete Tong and Jeremy Healy.  They were all stealing a very good living.

Nightclub DJs have zero talent.  It's no different to me going up to the front and playing a Nik Kershaw record.  And then when it finishes playing a Duran Duran record on the adjacent record player.

Yeah this. I used to go clubbing back in the 'superclub' era (Gatecrasher, Cream and all that) and the fawning over bloody DJs was unbearable. I remember some dopey lad coming up to us bragging he had Paul Oakenfold's autograph and he was devastated when me and my mate said "he is just a bloke who plays records:.

Haha, our ages must not be far apart, we used to go to progress!

Vegans

Aye, wtf is that all about.  My new sales director is a vegan, I told her I don't trust non meat eaters.  Went down well.

Take your vegan ideals to someone who gives a fuck.  She was wearing some batshit crazy t-shirt last week about being an ocean pirate and protecting fish so I ate tuna mayo for 4 solid days.  I even put fish pie in the work micro, i don't like fish pie but it was a victory.

I cannot believe there are many adults who treat the birthday with anything other than a shrug, a sigh and "another bloody year older"

One good thing about this i found was renting my uttox members badge to a friend who was desperate to go to the live music night with his mates who already had tickets when the human league was on this year and it was fully sold out and couldn't get a ticket for twice the face value of the ticket when i had no interest in going anyway.  The tickets for these 'lolracedays' are the most expensive of the year even though the racing is garbage.  Certainly makes my annual members fee a lot cheaper.

its a hard one I know and have had people close to me pass away and expecting another one in net few days, but as a whole we are living longer already and its a massive drain on all resources, what happens when we cure cancer / aids and all the other nasty things? people live longer and longer being more of a drain to the worlds resources until we reach the point we cant sustain it. Sounds a bit like the Dan Brown book but it does have a sense of truth about it.

Just go in members/go to a small track.  Cheltenham fetival is pretty hard going.

Am I ok to do stuff on birthdays ending in zero?  9 out of 10 I just shrug and move on, but going to get some shit done next year to mark it.

I think even more relevantly it's a socialist idea which just doesn't work.

In practice it would mean all the super rich who could afford to plan it out would make sure all their assets would get passed on in other ways before they die - so relatively little redistribution from them.

The middle classes would go from a property owning class to a renting class - given that the most likely way of getting on the property ladder now is by inheriting into it.

And on the off chance you had some working class done good - their family would immediately revert to being working class again.

If anything it would be a perfect opportunity to make sure that everybody was kept in their place and quashed any ideas about social mobility.

Don't even know the rate today tbh and no clue what it forms of the total tax take. But in principle, I believe it should be pretty low. When you leave an inheritance it's already a nett number after a life time of being taxed and probably having  contributed more than average since you have some left. Feels slightly unfair to take another slice on death.

2. People who sing 'Stand up if you love the darts'. It is the absolute worst sporting chant, it makes me twitch like I have tourette's everytime I hear it.

3. Musicals. No need to justify this one I think.

You do on this thread.   Can't imagine many are sat at home thinking how dare he?

The Commitments is my favourite movie.

I've sat through a few musicals as my wife loves them and in my humble opinion they are the most tedious, mind-numbing drivel I have ever had the misfortune to watch. I would rather do just about anything in the world ( including even maybe play golf whilst having stand up if you love the darts piped directly into my ears) than sit through Phantom of the Opera again.

The Commitments was his worst book.  The Van, The Snapper and The Woman Who Walked Into Doors were all better.

Some abs wankrag used to live next door to me and played that feckin album all day every day.  Boy I hated it after a while.  Mustang Sally.... feck off.  Not sure I could watch the film all these years later.

The Van probably my favourite.

When they go into the hospital, she is a patient in one of the beds. You have to be quick, only see her for a second, but it is clearly the most critical scene in the development of the story.

People who go to watch darts and sing inane songs and barely watch any of the sport should be tagged, and a list of their names circulated to warn other members of society that they are in their midst.

Also people who go racing on Saturdays and spend the entire afternoon at the bar. And then cause trouble.

WTF is the point? Why don't they just save the £25 entrance money and go down the pub?

Going racing at weekends is horrendous, haven't been in 10 years or more.

Xmas party race day at Uttox tomorrow should be total carnage with once a year piss heads donking around the betting ring covering people in fosters whilst getting their £2.50 ew on.

Must start charging my friends whenever they borrow something. I'll explain it's the value to them, not what it is going to cost me (zero), that I'm charging for.

I know someone who if he gives someone a lift home charges them petrol money, even though the person they are giving a ride to lives on the route they are already going on.

Baffling.

Yeah I know quite a few people who do this, including one chap who asked for money for a lift two months later because he forgot to at the time. He also always tries to get us to but Amway type stuff. And his wedding was bring your own booze. Bless him.

people keep offering me petrol money for nights out when i am going anyway or wanting to go but not going to unless i have someone to talk to on way home

FFS do i look like a taxi driver fuel for a 100 mile round trip for night out is less than £5 why they thrusting money on me

I know this isn't meant to include politics, but the rules have already been broken.

Socialists think they know what's good for the economy: spout about more ways of stripping yet more tax from those people & institutions that actually do stimulate & grow the economy.... Then spend the rest of their time working out how to avoid paying any tax themselves and siphoning what they can from the welfare system.

This is one of many reasons why socialism doesn't work.

Family Allowances Act 1945

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Family Allowances Act 1945 (8 & 9 Geo. VI c. 41) was an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom. Enacted in June 1945[1] when a caretaker Conservative government was in power, it came into operation from August 6, 1946, and was the first law to provide child benefit in the United Kingdom.

Family allowances had been one of the items proposed by the Beveridge Report in 1942. The Labour Party briefly debated pressing for allowances during the Second World War, but a party conference resolution to this end was opposed by the trades unions for fear that the amount paid would be taken into account in wage negotiations, leaving workers no better off.

As passed, the Act empowered the Minister of National Insurance to pay an allowance of five shillings per week for each child in a family other than the eldest; later Acts increased this sum. It was payable whilst the child was of school age, up to the age of eighteen, if apprenticed or in full-time school education.

I wonder what percentage of those in favour of sterilisation would be alive today...?

That was then (70 years ago), this is now. Postwar Family Allowances Act was about helping people with the cost of raising families after so many had perished in the 2 World Wars. It wasn't established as a primary or secondary income stream. Although I'm sure you know all this already.

Nirvana were to alternative rock what  the darkness were to experimental metal - the band formed by their drummer, the foo fighters, were a much better band.

Removing the notion of punishment from the criminal justice system would reduce crime.

Kids today are much better behaved and happier than kids of any other recent generation.

I think I disagree with all three of these but very curious and could absolutely be persuaded the other way. What makes you think reducing punishment would reduce crime and that kids are better behaved now?

On the subject of kids, I live near a school and that has made me a lot more optimistic about kids today, because they seem just like 'the good old days' when I was a kid rather than sex obsessed video game addicted smart phone zombies the media suggests they are.

You are wrong about Nirvana though, please stop being wrong. :)

Title: Re: Please share....
Post by: teddybloat on December 17, 2016, 12:31:05 PM
nirvana are meh. their drummer went on to make a much better and more sucessful band: grohl is a better singer than cobain, a better guitarist [not hard as cobain is sloppier than a dobermans lick] and a better songwriter too. nirvana for their vaunted originality were actually meekly following a musical blueprint laid down by bands like the pixies - cobain is more swoon-a-lishious than black francis, though. which must help for things like getting vanguards of the alternative-underground like MTV right behind you. for their much vaunted influence, well grunge was a minor hit for a few months in the 90s, i guess. until bands like oasis and even ecstasy fuelled D.J. worship became a thing that is. their best song is a bowie cover, too.

Quote
What makes you think reducing punishment would reduce crime

i wouldn't merely reduce punishment; i would do away with the notion completely.

at the moment we sentence people based largely on the moral outrage caused by the crime. we have a punitive system whereby crimes can be atoned for by serving a sentence. this is just irrational. if people are a danger to society or themselves, then they shouldn't be in society and in secure places. call them prisons if you like. but sentencing should 100% focus on the offender and not on factors like moral outrage, victim impact statements or other extraneous factors. this might actually result in people being in prison for longer periods. the staus quo sees judges set tariffs based on subjective variables such as moral outrage, press interest, victim profile, victim's view on the crime etc etc. the offender is locked up:  away from society and its changing norms, away from their family support network and friends, curtailing job prospects and housing them in a bruatalising environment. and once the sentence is complete, punishemnt is served and the offender is then released. this serves nobody and adds nothing to the good of society.

we lock people away from society and then release them expecting them to follow the common values of that society, even if the world may seem alien to them. crime is often a symptom, and we dont offer any treatment for the cause

taking away the notion of punishment, locking up fewer people, and investing money and care into prisoners would actually stand a chance of breaking the cycle of crime - its hard to do worse than the current system

where we do need to put people in prison the prisons should be small, based in local communities and should be places of rehabilitation and care. sentence the offender, not the offence. punishment shouldnt be a consideration

with regard to the kids, i can only speak from personal experience. i read about feral kids being blood-let on violent games and access to porn. i see gangs of teenagers, and they are looking at each other phones, sharing music, holding hands, mixed groups at ease in contact with each other. i see spontaneity in fashion, i hear laughter and and i see a lot of care towards others and politeness.  i dont recognise my own young-self and my own peer groups in the young today, they are heads and shoulders above my generation in terms of maturity and class.  the kids are alright, innit.

Title: Re: Please share....
Post by: muckthenuts on December 17, 2016, 02:18:14 PM
The kids of today are zombies that's why! Everything, and I mean everything depends on how they are viewed on social media e.g. Snapchat, Instagram and it is impossible for any school going child to avoid.

This comes at a price too, they might be more self-aware but have waaaaay short attention spans. Repetitive tasks like unloading a dishwasher are nightmares for my young cousins. Watching a film without having their phones out simultaneously is impossible. Snapchats are 10 seconds long, and soon we're going to have a generation who isn't tuned in to concentrate for a period any longer than that!

I once played golf with a guy wearing tight short shorts. That's a wtf moment in itself. Upon closer inspection I noticed that on his inner thigh he had a tattoo of a realistic looking cock. The whole comedic idea was that it looked like his winky was hanging out of his shorts. And he found it all very hilarious. I didn't know what to say.

Next time, give the close inspection a miss.

think this is universally known outside Glasgow... but don't tell them...as a Celtic Delusional hardcore fan once told me .. if they were in the premiership they would be top 4 every year and would win the champions league... Bless  ( ps this wasn't Celtic.. although secretly I think he believes this too :)

We would.  Only club in England that comes close to Celtc is size and stature is Man United.

what nonsense. "stature" is a completely nebulous concept and "size" means nothing really. if it did newcastle, leeds, wednesday, villa, wolves, sheff u etc would be top half of the premier league

celtic have had no competiton in the SPL for over a decade, have been beating league one standard sides since Rangers went pop and you'd expect them to be top 4 in the PL and win the champions league?

pass the smelling salts.

Mate the reason you can't get a space is because of all the fucking frauds!

Ii also agree not all disabilities are visible, but disabled parking should be restricted to those with a physical disability that impairs them from being able to walk a reasonable distance to their car.

If you're that fucking disabled just flip up the laptop and get the groceries delivered instead. Much better than struggling to the shops and taking up half the car park with oversize spaces.

Agree with 'family spaces'...wtf is that? I had to park in one because it was crazy busy and no other spaces. Return to find a handwritten note on the windscreen saying 'thanks for taking my space do you want to take my disability too?' I was fuming for weeks. I mean what is your disability? Because it appears to be fucking blindness?

Who is more handicapped than someone struggling with young children? (Well, disabled obviously, but apart from that). I'm not sure whether you have experienced it but, if you haven't, I can tell you that it is very difficult and parking close to the door is a huge help.

When I had two children less than two years old, there were no parent & child spaces and I used disabled spaces freely (though only if there were still plenty of other disabled spaces left). Later, Councils obviously came to agree with my view and introduced p&c spaces. In the same circumstances, I would do the same again.

i dont need my parking space closest to the shop my wheelchair means aslong as we are on the flat i can travel a fair distance
but what i do need and also parents with brats need is extra space, i need to open my 3 door car to its fullest extent so i can build my wheelchair then
transfer into it. I would park in a normal space if the space was side enough, and despite a sticker asking people to leave room even in an empty car park
some twat will park so close to my drivers door i cant even get my wheelchair in the gap never mind open the door.

so i always use the furthest away disabled parking spot when you have brats and these huge prams you need much the same room also needing to open doors wide enough to put on seat belts

as for shopping i very rarely do it (even rarer when there might be more that a dozen in the shop) but running out of stuff you need or want before you can get a delivery like the crate of beer
when you suddenly get a visit from a alcoholic also so much easier to get cash in tescos than using a card every time you want to spend a penny

Conor McGregor would beat Floyd Mayweather in a straight boxing match.
He's younger, hungrier, bigger and hits harder.
If he doesn't have to worry about his opponent's takedowns or kicks, he'd have a full training camp to focus on his hands and would be too much for Floyd.

Also, Floyd knows it and will never agree to the fight.

People die all the time. It's getting tiresome with every news site and social media site being filled with OMG x has died.

And the way people post about people that have just died like they were best mates.

Within 15 minutes of it being announced last night I saw three people post they were devastated. How?

Because it reminds them of their own mortality.

Yeah this and also it is probably a (good) sign that for the most part westerners have privileged lives. The fact that so many people are 'devastated' by a celebrity passing away or Trump getting elected suggests to me that their actual life is going pretty damn well.

I'd love to know what the real reason is - it can't be that, shirley ?

Don't people just want to look like they care about shiz, when in reality most of us don't give a shiz about any shiz

I've been somewhat upset by a family member passing, I would be lying on the floor, unable to move, devastated by the death of a child or grand child I'm sure, I can get quite upset by scenes of suffering, even when I don't know the people, but never been close to dev'd by any celeb death - just seems utterly indulgent to me

All I see retweeted and liked on facebook is "2016, not again" etc etc

The fact is that for many people (lets say you voted for Brexit, aren't losing any sleep over Trump and aren't up on celebrity culture) its a perfectly fine year

the prevalence of media channels, the echo chambers of the like minded/unhappy on social media and the sheer numbers of celebrities reaching mortality just make people think we are in a sort of new paradigm

all that said, George Michael dying so young is a shock of course but the personalisation of it for people is a product of our times

Yep, think you're right about the personalisation being the product of our times.  This makes more sense to me than the mortality thang

I'm not sure that it's a huge shock TBH-he's beeen abusing drink and drugs for many years and has put himself
In bizarre hi-risk situations repeatedly. What's more of a shock to me is that none of The Rolling Stones are dead! Anyone who smokes/drinks/drugs for the majority of their adult life must be odds-on to die before 60?

People just don't get the fact that there are thousands more celebrities than there ever was before, and this is increasing year on year. Look how many well-known musicians/bands there were when the Beatles started-hardly any. Since then the music industry has exploded creating hundreds more celebrities who aren't dead yet. And now of course we have the wonderful situation where people are well-known for doing nothing. With the age of social media creating celebs exponentially. People like the wealdstone raider, for example, are now celebrities!

We're agreed that the internet has misunderstood the reasons for there being more celebrity deaths, but I think we are in danger of replacing one myth with another. To say there were virtually no celebs in the 50s/60s is madness. Of course the number now is a multiple of then, but there already were a vast numbers of celebs back then.

And is the personalisation new? I can remember my parents being saddened by celebrity deaths. Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly come to mind.

Understandable because he was our youth and now we are old, devastating.

Kim K made a sex tape which was "leaked" and span up from there. She used to be a stylist for Paris Hilton and a few other celebrities. Her father achieved some noteriety for defending OJ Simpson  Her mother approached a production company to do a "The Osbournes" style tv show which gathered some momentum pretty quickly and things went from there. Marrying Kanye West definitely helped too. Its quite an impressive exercise in media management and marketing tbh.

Depressingly I think you are wrong about the noise when they pass away. I think they will have been forgotten. Paris who springs to mind.

Blue line is Kim, Red is Paris on google trends. which shows how often each term is searched for relating to a total volume. I don't think it will take them, that long to fade into obscurity, particularly when they stop trying.

As an aside Kim K was searched for more than Donald Trump in September 2016! If it wasn't for the election week itself where Trump is off the charts, she would be pretty much tied.

Well Paris Hilton falls into the same catgory afaic, I'm only aware of some sex tapes that involved her, & of her extreme wealth.

I was actually au-fait with the one who was on the O J Simpson Defence team - Robert - & he (or the actor playing him) also featured prominently in the recent OJ Simpson TV series which starred John Travolta.

I suppose Bernie Ecceleston's daughters might just fall into the same category - famous only for their inherited wealth & lavish spending. There are actually 3 Ecclestone daughters, Tamara, Petra - she's a real dish - & Deborah, but the last-named sort of flies unfer the radar, & is in fact old enough to be the mother of Tamara & Petra.

I wonder where Kim got the idea :P

Isn't it the same as someone like Tara Palmer Tomkinson/Katie Price esque. Can you think of a male famous for being attractive? I know attractive people tend to do better in all walks of life because of how our minds work, but I can't think of many socialite men. Perhaps you could argue the reality stars but there is a bit of circular reasoning going on once we get to that point. Google didn't return too much. Dan Blizerian might be as close as it gets lol.

It's a similar thing with poppies now.

People (or at least "celebrities") are expected to be seen to be wearing one.

If they don't there will be some sort of moral outrage.

It's all bullshit. Either wear a poppy or don't. I don't give a shit and nor should anyone else.

so symbols honouring the military forces of a country are both non-political and appropriate for a football match?

are all symbols of honouring military forces ok, or just ones that are for our boys?

are eg russian symbols supporting their men in the annexation of crimea ok? how about isreali symbols honouring men defending the occupied settlements of palestine?

Or every thread on the forum.

Actually, I get your point, but I have to admit that I do give a shit. I know thousands of people die every day, but people like Bowie, Prince, Victoria Wood etc were part of the fabric of my life. When they die, I feel like I want to reflect on it and remark on it.

Quite right too - you're only supposed to put paper and plastic in the bags.

Would have been a discussion two or three years ago, until the selling price of everything collapsed. It's not controversial that this is a pretty pointless activity now. Need to try harder, Mantis.

Oh ok well try this on for size. I don't care if a dog shits in the park and the owner doesn't clean it up. I mean if some random kid steps in it who gives a shit?

You know what tho, went into work early and was looking out my office window onto my golf course, sun coming up, beautifully manicured fairways, triple hand cut greens, stunning. Then this old woman appeared walking what looked like a pug. She ambled across the 18th green and as she approached the pin the dog dwelt for a moment and took a huge shit, right in the middle of the green. Then she just walked off. Oh my god. I felt like caving her skull in with a baseball bat.
