apart from the poor choice of channel (there are enough channels showing poker no need to conget the market more) this is great news. Why is it a poor choice of channel? As I mentioned, this channel is available on freeview and therefore has more potential viewers than other Sky channels such as Challenge or the Poker Channel. Sky have purchased the UK rights, and it is them that have decided to show it on the travel channel. Hopefully it will be well received and they will repeat it on Sky Sports. on the unedited side will this ever hit the uk market if so any sort of time frame in mind? I hope so. We will offer it to Sky again, and hopefully, if the edited shows are a success they will take them. Jon

The PartyPoker.com World Heads Up Poker Championship 2005 will premier on the Sky Travel Channel at 11:00 pm on June 27. That is good news for those with a Freeview box, as Sky Travel is one of 30 channels currently available via Freeview. There are currently about five million Freeview boxes in use in the UK.
The fifth annual heads up championship was held at Casino Barcelona in Spain this past May. The edited TV highlight programmes feature an exciting sports approach to poker, complete with player and match statistics and newly developed graphics. The production company specialises in sports programming such as downhill skiing and beach volleyball.
The ten-episode series will initially run for two weeks, Monday through Friday, on consecutive nights at 11:00 pm. Episodes 1-5 will air at 11pm, June 27-July 1. Episodes 6-10 will air at 11pm, July 4-8. On Saturday, July 2, all five episodes from the first week will be repeated, starting at 11:00pm and continuing until 4:00am. On Saturday, July 9, episodes 6-10 will repeat between 11pm and 4am.
To date, eight broadcasters in Europe and North America have signed to air the series.
BSkyB: United Kingdom Viasat Sport: Scandinavia 7TV: Russia Sky Sport: Italy SOS: Serbia Telesport: Romania TSN: Canada America One: USA
In addition, Viasat Sport Scandinavia will carry the complete, unedited versions of the televised matches, which means a total of about 30-35 hours of heads up action. Sky Sport Italy and Telesport Romania will also air the unedited shows. Dates and times are not yet available, so please check your local listings.

Padooki is not a variant poker game. It is a card game similar to poker, in the same way that 3 Card Brag is similar to poker. The reason Padooki is not a variant of poker is simple. In poker you make your best FIVE card hand. In Padooki you make your best FOUR card hand.

You are right, all of those games are fairly obscure. It used to be the case that Holdem was pretty obscure too. Originally the game played was 5 card draw. Then there was 5 card stud. This changed to 7 Card Stud, and then we got holdem. The times, they are always a changing. Who's to say that in the future the most popular game will still be Holdem?

I have played tournaments in 2-7 draw, A-5 Draw with a Joker, 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, Omaha Hi/Lo and Soko none of which use the "predefined set of hands that are used for Holdem.
I believe you can still play in all of these tournaments (maybe with the exception of A-5 Draw with a joker) somewhere around the world at some point each year. Each of these games (with the exception of A-5 Draw with a joker) can be played on at least one online site.

What has Padooki got to do with Poker
Poker is a game played using a standard deck of playing cards. Some versions use the addition of jokers, and others have some cards removed (strip deck.)
In poker you make a combination of cards to form a poker hand. The hand you form is ranked against a predefined set of hands.
In games like Texas Holdem, Omaha and 7 Card Stud players make their best 5 card hand and the hands are ranked high card, pair, two pair etc.
In the game London Lowball players make their best 5 card hand. The ranking of hands is defined A2346 (the best hand) followed by A2356, A2456 etc.
In the game 2-7 Triple draw players make their best 5 card hand. The ranking of hands is 234547 (best hand), 23467, 23567 etc.
In the game padooki players make their best 4 card hand. The ranking of hands is A234 of different suits (best hand) A235, A236 etc.
So, to summarise, the reason why padooki is like poker is it is a game played with a deck of playing cards where players try to make the best hand as defined by the ranking of hands for that particular game.
