Here are some extracts for a piece of consultancy I did for a local cardroom, which I believe are relevant


"The poker marketplace has expanded dramatically. Live poker has fragmented with the opening of many more destinations for people to play their poker. Online poker sites have proliferated, and now also provide severe competition for established live poker venues. Meanwhile the way in which the poker world is reported upon has been revolutionised with forums, blogs and news websites now numerous, whilst the printed “trade press” has also expanded in number.

For cardrooms close to London this expanded marketplace is especially important because being located close to London means you compete with many different clubs. For example

All this is due to gradual liberalisation of the gaming laws, and in many cases competition that did not exist two years ago. 

Furthermore the situation is going to intensify with supercasinos and dedicated poker rooms being established in new large casinos within an hour of your location."



In my opinion a number of factors are combining


* Increased supply of live poker outlets
* Consequent increased supply of festivals
* Short term seasonal lull in demand....summer/world cup/pre WSOP
* Further competition from Online, often with added value

Whilst I expect the seasonal lull to pick up, the problem of oversupply (there are only so many players in the "pool" to play in any given region or festival week) will I think long term lead to attrition and weaker locations closing down.

It also represents huge strategy problems for the incumbents such as Grosvenor who have cost bases aligned for higher player levels and decision making processes that are very slow, thus they are unable to react to new competition quickly enough with innovation.

Faced with oversupply, the organisations that are the first to consistently add money to prize pools and offer player friendly structures will I believe win out.

At the start of the poker boom, demand outstripped supply - hence oversubscribed events.

Organisers saw this and vastly increased supply - over and above the demand. Hence the smaller turnouts for tournaments recently.

Supply will drop back to the level the demand is at.

Life will go on.

Aren't Ant & Dec doing a poker based saturday night show soon (seriously) Brace yourselves.
I believe the popularity at the bottom end of the game (finacially speaking) has much more growth in it yet. the £100+ or £1000+ buy in market may be struggleing but poker in general is only going up.

Spot on, its always the case in summer, even more so with the worldcup on! You just have to look online to see the same. Tribeca comps are down in field size by about 20%
