the whole "turning off wifi and 3g" arguement annoys me (same for i phone, along with turn down the screen brightness)

I dont want to be planning on saving teh battery everytime i use it - i want a battery that lasts a day - pref 2 - its called fit for purpose and I phones not having a replacement battery is teh biggest con of all

I'd agree to a certain extent. But when your caught short without a charger or spare battery, it's nice to be able to preserve the battery for another couple of hours.

lol at iphone being sheepy. Until the latest HTC (which was realeased a year later) it was clearly the best phone on the market.

Dan, "clearly the best phone" using what metrics? I'd challenge that statement and can back it up with a decent argument. Can you, or are you just an iPhone fanboy?

Sigh at having to put disclaimers on everything

When I was looking for a new contract the iphone 4 was clearly the best phone for my requirements. I already used itunes, didn't care that it was a bit bigger than other phones available, had a lot more apps than the android at that point and from trying both of them out in store the iphone struck me as more user-friendly.

I did say in my post that I'm an iphone user and can't claim to be BBC impartial

So to summarise, it was "clearly the best phone" because you just thought it was. You didn't really compare it to any other phone in terms of how it actually worked with calls, texts, emails, web browsing, etc.

Exactly. Woodsey posted asking for opinions on the two and my opinion at the time was that the iphone 4 was clearly the best one available. Not really sure why you've decided to jump down my throat about it but if any personal offence was caused then my sincerest apologies.

With it being the year 2010 I assumed that whatever phone I bought would be fine for calls, texts, emails and browsing and I've yet to be shown otherwise.

LOL Dan, you can say and think what you want. Just wanted to know the reasoning behind you thinking it was clearly the best phone. Funnily enough I looked at a different phone and thought exactly the same thing.

You got upset at gatso's sheep comment, but then seemed to then go along with the iphone party line without really explaining why you thought it was the best phone.

You say that it was 2010 and you assumed that any phone would do the basics well. That's not necessarily true.

But let's not fall out about it Wink

Never had an iphone so cannot compare but have a htc desire and the battery life is terrible

Have you ever tried any apps to extend the battery life, or even tried switching the wi-fi or GPS off?  Just wondering...

I have had the Desire for over a year, and not had a problem with the battery dying on me, but then again, I've set the phone up to use the battery as wisely as possible and also have spare batteries if necessary.

Any reccomendations ? my wifi and gps are never on and my desire lasts about 7 hours - im at work for 9 so its kinda annoying

I'm on a rooted phone using cyanogen mod.
Juice Defender ultimate is a good app for extending battery life
Tasker (brilliant app for lots of reasons. One related to battery life is that my GPS is turned off by default, but is switched on automatically when I start the maps app, and automatically switches off when I close the maps app).
Screen set to automatic dim (not sure if that's available on non-rooted phones or not,  but the screen tends to be the biggest drain of battery)
Oh, and I also usually carry a few spare batteries around with me if I'm away from my charger for a day or two.  That means I get more than a long-weekend's use even if I'm hammering the phone.

Weee, downloaded free version off this, got through work whilst battery still in green, gonna snap buy the ultimate one now, thanks alot

Is there much difference between the free version and the ultimate one?
