Woodsey, the Sensation is light years ahead of the Desire in pretty much every way.
Have you held one? Yes, it's bigger than the Desire, but the cons of that are outweighed by the pros.
The desire is about 18 months old (maybe two years) and the technology has moved on dramatically. I have a Desire and it's still an excellent phone, but the missus has just got the Sensation and I want one now.
As for the comparison between Android and the iPhone, it depends what you want.
If you want a video/music device, with slick apps and can live with the negatives the iPhone has in terms of an actual communication device, then the iPhone might be for you. If you're after a phone primarily for calls, texts, web, emails, etc., then I'm waiting for anyone to put forward a case for the iPhone ahead of a decent android phone.
I'm an android fanboy, so probably exhibiting bias. So take all that with a pinch of salt.
As for the wildfire, I definitely wouldn't. Vastly underpowered.
There is another choice, and StuHop is the man to ask on this one. If you want the benefits of android, but do watch a lot of video on your phone the Samsung Galaxy S II looks the schnizzle. Again it's a similar size to the sensation, but slimmer.

Oh, here's an example of the android out performing an iPhone. I was at an event last weekend and this meant I wasn't near a telly to watch the rugby league match on the BBC.
Fortunately, I could go to the BBC website and watch the whole thing on my phone. I'd had my phone on all day, and with the demands of the screen and constant streaming of the video the battery needed changing at half time. No problem though and I managed to watch the whole match and Wigan beat Warrington and I was a happy bunny.
With an iPhone I couldn't have done that.

lol at iphone being sheepy. Until the latest HTC (which was realeased a year later) it was clearly the best phone on the market.
Dan, "clearly the best phone" using what metrics? I'd challenge that statement and can back it up with a decent argument. Can you, or are you just an iPhone fanboy?

Dan, my iPhone did 3 hours of the British GP used 40% battery? 50% of that was on 3G

My phone had been on for 24 hours without charge before I watched the rugby.
You can swap the battery on your iphone can you if it dies? Another question, can you watch Sky Anywhere on an iphone (geniune question, I have no idea if you can or not)?

Sky sports 1 and 2 are covered with a free app called sky go.
Tv catchup covers most channels.
My other TV apps are BBC iplayer, itv player, 4OD

I have the older version the the HTC desire and cant wait to get rid of; battery on mine is awful(have tried different battery) plus have had loads of glitches with mine.... software hanging up quite a bit(not good when you use it for work), when I click in a message it goes into someone elses message(end up texting the wrong person because of this) this fault has happened with others I know have the desire. trying to delete messages takes an age. Tried everything from resets to wiping it clean and nothing has helped. even though my phone is faulty and I am willing to go on a 2 year contract O2 are unwilling to upgrade me 2 months early so I will be leaving O2 & going to vodaphone with the Iphone 4. O2 will be losing 2 long term contracts out of this issue.
Will never go back to O2
Will never go back to HTC

Sigh at having to put disclaimers on everything
When I was looking for a new contract the iphone 4 was clearly the best phone for my requirements. I already used itunes, didn't care that it was a bit bigger than other phones available, had a lot more apps than the android at that point and from trying both of them out in store the iphone struck me as more user-friendly.
I did say in my post that I'm an iphone user and can't claim to be BBC impartial

I've had every single iPhone (2G, 3G, 3Gs, 4) and I was pretty impressed with them all with exception to the 4. Both myself and 2 other colleagues have had at least 3 replacements due to drop calls and the dreaded "No Sim" error. I wouldn't have another iPhone 4 if you gave it to me other than to sell it on eBay for the cash!
After my last iPhone 4 replacement I tried an Android phone with my own money as my phone is a business contract. I was immediately so much happier with the fact I could reliably receive and make phones calls! Lol. Ok, my phone choice wasn't the best (Dell Streak 5") but the Android operating system in my opinion is far better. I'll try and draw up some comparrions for you with the iPhone 4 vs my sparkly new HTC Sensation which I don't actually think is that big:
In fact no, bugger it, I'll forward you to a good comparison someone else did:
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/comparisons/856383/htc_sensation_vs_apple_iphone_4.html
For me, it's a no brainier, the only thing that may give the Sensation a run for it's money in the not to distant future MAY be the iPhone 5, but firstly don't hold your breath for the release date, and 2. be prepared to have to switch networks as it'll probably get an exclusivity license from one of the operators.
One last thing with regards to the size, please try a smart phone. I promise you that after a couple of months use, you'll wonder how you ever got on with the traditional style phone!
