Went to see Joe Hachem, Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer at the Oxford Union last night, which was quite interesting. Turned out, though, that the whole thing was part of a Pokerstars promo tour, so I'm proud owner of two items of poker merchandise now (the Blonde-shirt still wins, though). Well, besides the Pokerstars promo is was quite interesting, though, they showed two hands from each of the three players and actually chose sensible hands, such as KQ v AQ, AJ v AJ (which was quite funny), 78 v AQ on a 9TJ flop etc., and then presented their thoughts on those hands. I thought it was quite worthwhile as there for one thing that I had never really thought about in poker, but that somehow seems obvious now, which was not to value bet on the turn in some tournament stages when you know the other guy is on a good draw and wouldn't fold anyway but at the same time you woudln't be able to fold your hand on the river whether he made his draw or not. I.e. defensive play. Total news to fishy me, who'd bet any pair against seven opponents ...

Got a chance to talk to them afterwards and in the end Hachem wished me (what else would he do) good luck for my next few games. Ended up playing that night and had my first loosing session in three weeks. So, basically: Don't let any WSOP Champion wish you good luck! It doesn't work!

Oh, completely forgot about the other three interesting things:

How to stop tilting

Moneymaker: Cigarettes
Hachem (Self-proclaimed former King of Tilt): Being logical, if you get sucked-out on, it had nothing to do with your play and it also proves you're the better player. So technically, be happy to get sucked-out on, because it means in the long run you will win money from that guy. You should only get upset when you make bad calls yourself, know you're behind (chasing with Kings was the obvious example here) etc.
Raymer: I don't tilt. Well, good for him ...

Why they're different to Stuey Ungar / Gambling

General consensus: Poker is good, gambling bad for you in the long run. Except for Moneymaker they said they never were gamblers anyway/don't have enough gamble in them. I think the idea was, if you want to bet on sports/horses/casino games, fair enough, but don't spend any serious money. Raymers concept was not spending more money on gambling per week than one big bet in poker (wow, that'd give me a cool 2 quid to spend on gambling. woohoo).

Oh, and don't do drugs. They're bad for you.

Most irritating people in poker

Hmm, I'm going to flop this one. Hachem was on about some David from Europe, forgot his lastname but wasn't DC. General consensus again was that Matusow (spelling?) talks too much, but at least he's funny. Nobody mentioned TonyG, shame. Oh, and Phil Hellmuth is lovely apparently, it's all just table-image, or so they say.

Speaking of Hellmuth has anyone seen the Bill v Phil thing?

Hellmuth talking about Fillmaff is far too sureal for me.

There's irony, the world's second most irritating player seconding a nomination for the world's first.  Cheesy
