Minimum Buy In Rats

Probably wrong board to post on but I reckon more likely to get some serious debate going.

What are your opinion of cash game players who buy in for the bare minimum and try and double up before shooting away from the table?

This really irritates me, especially when they seem to outdraw u and don't come back!!!

Poker ain't personal. What does it matter who you get it back from?

Look on the bright side. If all your opponents buy-in for the minimum, no-one will be able to bet big to get you off your better draws on the flop in a decent pot. When they flop a bigger full house, they won't be able to muff all your chips.

Small buy-in merchants are the easiest way to make fast money IMO - they stick it in with much less than they would if they bought in for the full amount.

I normally buy in for the average

Buying in for the max gives you an advantage over those with less. You can push them off pots, play a wider range of hands, be more aggressive, be more selective etc etc etc

If your ability at poker is such that you don't play well on later streets.

If you are vulnerable to the "moves" that Royal Flush speaks of.

If you are likely to call off too much money with marginal hands.

If the principle reason you play poker is to gamble.

If any of the above is true, then it may be in your best interest to buy-in for a smaller amount of money.

If the above is true for your opponents, they're the type of players you want in your game.  It's good for them to mini-buy, it lessens the skill factor, and they are often outmatched in that department. That they have the sense to buy in for the optimal amount that suits their game should not bother you too much.

There's an old professional gambler's adage, "You have to give action to get action."
Favourable gambling situations are unlilkely to have everything going your way. While it's bad that they've bought in for a small amount, it's good that they've sat themselves at your table in the first place.

The biggest fish would lose close to every time if they bought in for 100BB. They have to win occasionaly, to keep coming back.
Buying in for 10BB gives them a much greater chance of emerging victorious sometimes, and therefore, a much greater chance of donating regularly.

If you lose to one hit and run merchant, so what. Another will be along in a minute to rectify the situation.

Personally i welcome this change of using rats - hopefully the days of a player sitting down at a cash game table with a monkey are long gone!!!
