Ok Guy Richie has lost the plot nowadays but Snatch and Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrells were just brilliant
True Romance and Pulp Ficton were definately the peak for the guy with the chin, but 4 Rooms & Resorvoir Dogs were pretty good as well
Agree the opening scene from Private Ryan is the best war scene ever!
and of course I agree The Good The Bad & The Ugly was the best Wessie ever
when i was a kid I alway like Nicholas Roeg films .... Walkabout, Jubilee, etc etc...but they are all a bit dated now
Get Carter was my favourite gangster film as a kid as well...although the Godfather is probably unbeatable in this catagory

Now Dave, we all know what the attraction is in you picking walkabout ... Jenny Agutter in the buff for 70% of the film !!!

the "Heist" films... Snatch, Lock stock..etc are all good, But watch Layer Cake ... cracking film.

Layer cake was good, but Snatch and Lock Stock were better because they were funny as well.

I made the mistake of sitting in the front row of the cinema to watch this. That scene is so realistic I felt like I'd been shot. It was rather strange watching the whole audience stagger rather than walk out at the end.
Just misses out on my top 3 though.
I'm going with

Shawshank Redemption
Fight Club
Usual Suspects

but it was a tough decision

I would put Cider House Rules in there as well.  But I usually put that in my Top 4 film list.

I've yet to see a world class 3.

Here are my picks.

(1) The Seven Samurai

(2) The Empire Strikes Back

(3) Jerry Maguire ( yes its soppy, but a great movie for a lost soul.

and if i was allowed a fourth it would be Shogun Assasin - full gore Japanese version

I really don't understand lists like this - films come in so many different shapes, sizes, varieties, and so on - depending on my mood, my favourites change all the time and as a film buff I could never narrow down my favourites to a mere three.

Same goes for music. Three favourite songs? Forget it...

Oh man 3? No chance.

Godfather pt I is the daddy for me. Other must sees are The Usual Suspects, One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and of course the almighty Star Wars Trilogy. (Indiana Jones rocks too but for other reasons!)

I don't really like cheesey epics like Gladiator or Braveheart so for that type of film I'd go for the older stuff. Ben Hur etc.

Action flicks are so bad these days that I couldn't possibly put any in my top film list but watchable ones (without the cheese and explosions every 5 seconds) are Heat, Ronin and Collateral.

For some of the dialogue written I like films like Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, etc. Noteable mention to Gump too. For comedy scripts you cannot beat Snatch, Lock Stock and the amazing Friday. (Most quotable film ever!)

Kevin Smith films rock - if you like that sort of thing, they aint for everyone.

As much as I really want to hate it, I cant help but like Pirates of the Carribean too, purely for the Depp genius!

Also got to admit to being a huge martial arts film fan. Anything Bruce Lee is golden and early Jackie Chan is different class too. Young Master (Jackie Chan) has the best and funniest fight scene ever.

EDIT: After Zimbra's post can't believe I didn't mention Jaws. Best suspense movie ever.

For me, an easier challenge is to name one film per director I would take to a desert island - that at least gives me a chance of getting somewhere.

E.g. if I could take just one Spielberg film, it would be Raiders of the Lost Ark. I mean, it's hard to lose Jaws and Close Encounters... not to mention - well, you see how tough this is already. I probably shouldn't go on...
