Are we distinguishing here between films that are clearly extremely poorly conceived, poorly acted, poorly made?

Or are we just giving lists of films that we didn't like (for one reason or another) that actually do have artistic merit?

There is a huge difference between films like:

a) Braveheart (which one may or may not like, depending on one's point of view, but which was clearly well-conceived, well-filmed and well-acted)

b) The Blair Witch Project (which one may or may not feel was an original idea, or possibly over-hyped)

c) Heaven's Gate (which one may or may not feel is worth watching, due to the slow style of the film being out-of-touch with modern audiences - and incidentally one of the biggest box-office flops of all time)

d) and film films like Hudson Hawk or Speed 2 (which were poorly conceived, poorly-executed commercial vehicles).

I often have discussions with friends about things like this - exactly what makes a bad movie bad? The movies that we all agree on as being utterly unworthy, are generally what we refer to as 'commercial s***' - where the only aim was to make money and no thought was put into the film at all. Films in the d) bracket, basically.

A truly bad film has to be so bad that you can't even sit through it. The Matrix sequels were disappointing, but I found they passed an idle couple of hours each.

For true awfulness, I nominate:

Fat Slags

Tried to watch it one night when bored and just couldn't. Too awful.

Notable mention to Bad Boys II.

Actually anything by Micheal Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer needs binning.

I have to issue the red card there, Jerry Bruckheimer had been involved in some greatly entertaining movies, Gone in 60 seconds, con air, Bad boys, and I think The Rock, as well.

When I go to the cinema, rent a DVD/Video, or buy one for that matter I want to be entertained, The Bruckheimer movies i have seen do that for me, entertain me for a few hours, get the adrenalin pumping and a few plot twists just to keep it plausable.

Binning all Bruckheimer movies just seems a little OTT in my opinion.

This is the problem with 'worst film' threads... some people will go "that was awful" when in fact it was a very well made film that just wasn't for them.

Donnie Darko is a great example of such a film. Many people didn't get it, and thus didn't like it. But it was a superbly made film, and the ones who did get it usually rank it among their favourites.

"Fat Slags" on the other hand, is pretty unequivocably bad, I challenge anyone to defend it.

Terms of endearment (WTF was I doing watching this, only heaven knows)
Murder FX
That film with Bradd Pitt and Julia Roberts (bought the DVD for £14, watched it and had auctioned it for £1.78 on ebay within 3 days)
Shallow Hal was up there too!

Starship Troopers
Closer

2 of my favourite films!

A lot of people just dont get starship troopers, Paul Verhoeven is a genious and the film was bloody brilliant. It's in the same vein as scream, scream was a pisstake out of horror films but still was a horror films in itself, Troopers is the same way. GENIOUS!

The robocop style 'adverts' in the middle just have me in stiches everytime i watch the film.

Closer, well i dunno what to say. This film is class, i cant see how you think it is bad!
