I recently had to junk a Packard Bell laptop, it lasted about 18 months and the battery life was awful. We use Dell at work and they are a much better class of machine. Have a look in their factory outlet section of their website, and keep checking back as they continually add new machines there. My Dell laptop had a battery life of about 4 hours.

Posted this in another topic about dell:
Quote
Had a Dell laptop and all I can say is that I will NEVER buy from Dell again.
Had issue after issue..overheating, cd drive malfunctioning for no apparant reason etc etc. They try to fix it all via emails and get the me to take apart the laptop. Eventually they sent an engineer only for the problems to arise again about a month later. Then they delayed replying to emails until my warranty had expired and informed me that I was no longer covered.
Ended up managing to sell it despite its problems on ebay and bought a Sony Vaio and can't recommend it highly enough. If you do decide to go with Dell research the model you are choosing because a number have problems. They tried to claim there wasn't a known problem with the laptop I bought despite thousands of people online complaining and even a computer magazine picking up on a design fault which caused the overheating. Rather than offer an alternative they simply replaced parts so that the laptop would just about continue working until the warranty expired.

I note what you say about the Dells. I am sure it was frustrating for you.
I have always found their support to be first class.
If you are buying a laptop on eBay be very careful, this is one of the sections where you will find yourself getting ripped off more than any other. There are a lot of scammers in this section.

I got my latest Laptop off Ebay - and it's a cracker - but yes there's a lot of scammers.

Yup without a doubt there are scammers selling laptops but if you check out feedback carefully (ie. not just checking the positive % but also that he has sold similar expensive items before) you should be ok, plus if you pay by paypal you are covered for a certain amount. I was scammed over buying a phone and received 90% of the money back through the fraud prevention scheme.
Re: Dell I know some people have had no problems with them and are completely happy with their service but there are also A LOT who are unhappy. See:

Good point regarding the feedback.
I saw a laptop - being offered for sale in London by someone with about 400 positive feedbacks. On looking into his history his prior sales were plants in America. I contacted Ebay about it as someone had clearly hijacked the account but the item remained on sale until it closed the next day for £500.

yeh there used to be a scam where people bought a load of cheap items so they got a positive feedback of 20+ and then suddenly started selling DVD players, laptops, and other electronic equipment on short auctions. By the time ebay had closed the accounts they had made a couple of grand already.

I recently bought one of these -

.
Just a bit less than £600.
Perfectly happy with it.
