I think this is the best piece of journalism I've read about the World Cup so far.

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/worldcup06/2006/06/15/goodnight_galacticos.html

World Cups are more than tournaments of merit; they are the quadrennial examination of football's conscience where eras are bookended and old fashions buried for the next big thing. And, on the evidence of Germany so far, in this year's Oxfam-bound binbag are the galacticos and all the bankrupt flatulence they brought to the game.

so true. - must admit the argies and the spaniards have looked the strongest so far but there is a long way to go - teams shouldn't peak too soon, they only have to qualify then they can start to play.
