Check out Rob Sherwood's latest entry.

Can't believe someone who's won as much as Cloutier is resorting to nipping. So sad as I am a big Cloutier fan.

Cheers Rob.  I think the idea of working out a buy-in that leaves a smidgeon of cash on top is so that the players can't have an "I don't have any cash on me" excuse when it comes to looking after the dealer.  In a standard chop h/u, you receive $60 each and on a $2500 slice it doesn't seem unreasonable to just leave it for the dealer, but I seem to remember that there was a "standard" tip that was the norm - just can't remember how much!

Thats just plain crap if thats the case. Why don't they just pay the dealer properly in the first place!

It is definitely the case - the cash is to tip the dealer.  US culture expects tipping in the service industry and dealers are considered part of this.

For $120 i will deal the fricking thing myself!

The straighteners appear to be doing the job!

Regarding tipping, I've never seen a dealer being tipped the full $120, $40-$60 seems to be the norm. Part of the culture and I have no problem with it, particularly as the rake is so small. The $525 satellites are in effect $512 +$13 rake whereas the equivalent buy-in on Pokerstars is $525 + $30.

Yes that sounds about right, the sats in Binions used to be at the right level for the following day's event, so sometimes they would be $200, $300 or $500.  When it came to tiping, I found it often was discussed as part of the chop.

With roughly equal chips you might agree a straight chop and the norm is that you both leave the same tip.
With a moderately disproportionate stack I have seen offers of "a straight chop but you take care of the tip"
And for massively uneven chips it may take a lammer or two to even it up!

As for the tipping culture, each to their own, but I don't understand the attitude of "I wouldn't tip at home so I'm not tipping here" - you aren't at home and you might want to try and adopt the local culture.  No wonder when I go on holiday to Turkey alll I can find is "Full English Breakfast" in the "Kings Arms" - they are getting used to all the Brits that willfully refuse to adapt!

I have no problem with tipping, i would rather they would just pay them a decent wage in the first place. I always tip in Vegas,

Fine- not looking for any arguments, it is a personal matter after all. But fwiw, here's my take on the "decent wage" scenario, using a restaurant to illustrate:

Case A: The owner decides he can pay a decent wage and put a steak on the menu for $30.  So no tip required, but you can choose to tip outstanding service if you like.

Case B: The owner decides that he wants to ensure high levels of service, so he witholds the equivalent of $5 wages per steak.  He can now put the steak on the menu at $25 and have an unwritten rule that customers should leave the remaining $5 only if the service has warranted it.

My take on it is that I am more likely to enjoy myself under case B.

Converting to the Rio, I think it reasonable to look after a dealer in a satellite that could have been dealing a cash game.  There still is a limit, for example in the tournys where they have already taken out a dealers pool, I would  tip, but not very much, enough to take their tip up to 4-5% which is my judgement on where I am comfortable.

Vegas can certainly get out of hand regarding tipping.  Opening taxi doors for example hardly seems worth a tip.  But then the guy isn't just opening the door - he is marshalling the taxi line and getting you on your way quicker than you otherwise would.  In the UK you are probably still stuck in the hotel lobby trying to get someone not really interested to call you a cab...

I found that what you lost in tipping you gained in free beer!

A $1 tip for a beer? Amen.

Yeah i always took the line that i tipped what i would spend on drinks!

Infact i got in a 'tip war' last time i went, seeing who could tip the most, lol.

I just dont see the similarity between a waiter and a dealer.

where you really lose out in the us, is when playing low level cash - everytime you get dealt a decent (winning hand) you are almost expected to tip the dealer 5 bucks or something reasonable in relation to the pot. I mean the pot is already getting raked, so youare getting done up twice.

hardly makes the games worth playing to be honest.
