Baron the truth is we don't know what that was about before the game started. I can't see Portugal plotted to get Rooney sent off, if this was the case they would have been smacking him about. The 2 clearly know eachother well and are team mates, a little push before the game has started is almost certainley just competitive banter. They know they are both carrying the expectations of thier country as the top players from each team, i find it far more likely it was friendly.
Even now knowing he is leaving Man Utd? Amazing how he only comfirmed this after the game two days after Ferguson issues a denial!
Just because he is leaving doesnt mean he dislikes Rooney!

the only thing that bothers me is that until Ronaldo went over, the ref had only given a free kick to Portugal. Yes, it looks like Rooney stepped on his goolies, but a free kick was given. It was only after the push that the card was shown.
Anyway, I'm over it now

The referee confirmed that the sending off was for the push but at the end of the day Ronaldo didnt do anything that was against the rules, if he would have run over waiving his hand as if to say "show him the card" then yes he broke the rules but he didnt.
When you are playing poker against someone who you know tilts easily, what do you do? You try everything possible WITHIN THE RULES to get the guy to tilt - because as soon as he does you know he/she will start making mistakes and that will be the time that you could profit most from his mistakes.
All Ronaldo did was put Rooney on tilt - and lets face it, that isnt really difficult to do given his track record.........

This isn't poker.
Rooney and Ronaldo are paid for their living by their club NOT their country. In most of our opinions it is unsporting behaviour to do this to a player let alone your own teammate.
Tilting is part of the game in poker but it's ungentlemanly in football.

What a load of trite. They were not teammates when this occured.
I checked again on the news and they were wearing different jerseys. One played for England, the other for Portugal.
What's more ungentlemanly? Winking and goading, or standing on someones doodahs and giving them a shove.

I completely agree Rooney should have been sent off but that is NOT the issue here. The issue is Ronaldo. What he did is ungentlemanly. The fact that Rooney was sent off for an awful offence is by the by, it does not make Ronaldo innocent one iota.
As for them wearing different Jerseys this is true. There are limits though. Gerrard and Rooney played for seperate halves of Liverpool where the rivalry is fierce. You wouldn't see either acting like Ronaldo. Sorry but I dont buy the "different shirts" excuse for his actions one bit.

Sorry Baron I totally disagree. The incident before the game - we'd need to ask the players.
Complaining that someone just stamped on your team-mates nuts? Ungentlemanly? NO WAY.
Colin Cameron (was at wolves) is considered scum by Celtic fans for defending Ganea (his club teammate) of Romania, after he crippled a young Celtic Player with an over the ball tackle. (Kennedy hasn't played since). I don't give a toss whether they played for the same club, I couldn't care less whether Ganea was godfather to his weans... he watched a player cripple a youngster and then tried to defend him.
Now Ronaldo DID NOT wave an imaginary card, he just ran up (like most England players would) and complained that his team-mate had been assaulted. Rooney then shoved Ronaldo, he didn't go down (he didn't even acknowledge it) - if he was just out to 'cheat' Rooney off the park he'd have hit the deck.
Sorry - Ronaldo's done nothing wrong. And the pundits who showed themselves to be hypocrites, followed by a press who were looking for scapegoats do England no favours either.

Which is why he was sent off for the push rather than the stamp

Rod, good post but I dont buy the "all he did was defend his team mate" one bit.
The pre match wind up, the winking, the admission of wanting to leave England - that's not defending your team mate.
To me this is clear cut, he is not a good professional.

I guess Ronaldo's middle finger to Benefica fans in the Champions League this year wasn't him inciting the bitter rivals of his ex club Sporting Lisboa?
Of course, he was trying to defend himself!

There were 22 cheats on the park then.
All it was is gamesmanship. Part and parcel of football today. Ronaldo is just rather good at it.
Winking is cheating when you ask multiple choice questions and wink when you read the right option. In football, it's just a bit of psyche out.
Winding up is cheating before the off at the cuckoo clock cup. In football, it's all part of big boy tennis.
