Well, we enjoyed our few months of glory, we chirped for England, but the king is dead, long live the king.
Well played Luton, you are now the Inter-Casino Heads-Up champs, & I guess you will accept a Challenge from Walsall at their next Festival. And you are worthy Champs too. Not just because you won fair & square, but you played it in EXACTLY the right spirit. The concept is safe with Luton, I am quite sure.
A special word of thanks to Carmel, for all her hard work, & to Jonathan Rabb. There were trophies for everyone who played, & a glass of champers afterwards. Thanks.
As to the match itself, Rob Yong showed yet again that he is a quite exceptional Heads-Up player. If he plays one of the Major Heads Up Tournies, he'd be a good bet against anyone. He's as game as a pebble, & has game to spare.
Oh, & my clash with the boy, J P Kelly. Two versions, choose the one you think is the real one.
1) EXACTLY the opponent I wanted. Not frightened of a kid, I let him have his moment of glory, by leading for a while, then crushed him , like a crushed thing. Game him a little lesson in Heads Up Play for schoolboys.
2) The LAST guy i wanted to be drawn against. Truly. 0 from 1 in Heads-Up so far, I knew this guy has the game to beat me, I was facing ignomony and humiliation from a talented youngster. The first 15 minutes he played me off the table, I just could not cope with him. But I DID recognize that HE was under pressure too - he was EXPECTED to thrash the 'ol fella. So i changed tactics, by starting to move in on him, time after time. Clever? Not really - just reducing the skill quotient, & increasing the luck factor. The best way to play someone Heads Up who is better than me, was how I saw it. I scrimped and scraped and ducked & dived until I had a slim chip lead. JP then made a R pre-flop, with the blinds getting unwieldy, I looked down at 9-9 - massive heads up - & JP is way too good a player H-U to pre-flop R with TT or better (IMO), so I reckoned I was ahead, & moved all-in. JP called, he had AQ, it was a race, all down to luck. And the luck was with me. He's a smashing lad, well mannered, well behaved, & dignified in defeat. A truly great prospect when he's had a bit more experience, and Luton, & his parents, should be proud of him.
Finally, a big thank you to all the Notts lads. You did just grreat. Real tough on Junior to have to play the decider against Bushy, thats a TOUGH draw, but Junior did brilliant, fightiing back from a huge defecit, no mean feat against a player of Bushy's calibre. And Junior went in ahead - massively so - in the final hand. Proud of you Greg, that must have been a bitter pill to swallow.
Good Luck to Luton, hope you enjoy your reign as Champions as much as we did. As Captain of the losing side, I do the dignified & proper thing, & resign.
Great fun!
