Many of you may already know, or even use this, but here goes anyway.

VOIP (telephone calls over the internet) is a handy thing to have, i suppose its handy in everyday life as well, but more so when travelling abroad.

I have setup our system at home to accept VOIP (by using Skype which is free!) , and also on my laptop.

What this means is that as long as I am at my laptop, I can call home and home can call me for free! (YES FREE!!!)

It is very easy to set up and doesnt cost alot for the hardware.

Everyone should do this who travells.

Gary uses Skype a lot.  It's also good for calling landlines abroad - Gary's sister was out in Australia for a while and he could call her on her landline for the cost of a local call.

Yes if you sign up for "Skype Out" and make a deposit, you can call normal land lines for less than 1 p per minute.

my useful tip would be: Leave all firearms at home and under no circumstances mention the words "terrorist" or "militant" upon entering the United States.

Also don't be tripped up by the cunning questions on the back of the green visa waver form that they give you on the plane, what ever you do don't tick yes on >:? the ones that ask you if you are now or have ever been involved in espionage, and have you ever been convicted of war crimes! >:?

I am always tempted to tick yes all down the page just for a giggle, but I seem to bottle out of it every time.

Last year, took me 20 minutes (NO JOKE!!) to get through. All because I was travelling alone, not meeting anyone and staying in a hotel!!

The conversation went along the lines of
"Who are you travelling with?"
"No one"
"And who are you meeting in the USA?"
"No one"
"So you are travelling alone, and not meeting anyone?"
"Yes"
"why?"

why? wtf was i gonna answer there?!?!

Str8 up, this convo went on for approx 20 minutes - i got in in the end, my answer "cos I am" wasnt working, so after 20 minutes I replied "because I am a loner and have no friends" - that did the job! Smiley

More fun when you have 2 diffrent Visa's in your passport for flight trainning in florida with diffrent schools!

That was fun trying to explain it after sitting in the "mexican room" for 3 hrs.
