laptop help

i am still looking for a laptop for when i go into hospital
i have surfed all the major uk stores but cant get to grips with the
differences in processors
for my desktops ( i have 4 in house just now) i just get the one with the biggest ghz
but the laptops all seem to have a different rating system as a p4 3.0 is same price as a celron m 1.4 which is same prices a celron m 1.8
anyone explain the differences in the processors also anyone got a recomendation

Hello mate,

The Celleron is a budget version of Pentiums front end processor... don't know much but I think the bus speed is slower on the Celleron...

Apart from that not too much of a clue... feel free to correct me anyone...

Ironside I just replaced my laptop after the old one gave up the ghost.

A lot of it depends on what you need it for. I wanted one for internet, email and poker playing. Modern laptops are so powerful I just went for the cheapest one available at www.dell.co.uk. 400 including delivery.

This laptop would also easily run most standard applications - Word, Excel, etc.

I wouldn't bother going for anything more powerful unless you have specific requirements i.e. playing computer games.

The confussion lies in the fact that there are effectively 2 different laptop markets out there. The crux of the matter is do you require a latop with a long battery life or do you need your laptop to be a portable computer.

If you are not near a power supply the choice is to go for the celeron although doing so you sacrifice processing power. If however, you want to go for a pentium 3.0+ you will have better processing power but expect no more than an hour tops from the battery (despite what the manufacturers claim).

The question is will you be using when not near a power supply. If the answer is yes go for the celeron. If the answer is no go for the pentium/AMD.

Yes, a celeron won't eat your power as much as the others, but the lack of processor power can be eased by getting extra RAM, most people forget about this very cheap way around the problem. Simple, but it works.

My lappy (Sony Vaio)uses celeron but I made sure I doubled the RAM, it now suits all my needs and even all my Uni work.

ironside, dont be too confused with the porcessors, they main differences in the procesoor inst the fact that they run at the different speed since it really applicable when your comparing the pentium 4 to the celeron m.

the celeron m is a processor with the built in wireless connection allowing you to connect to a wireless network whereas the pentium doesnt, albeit that the p4 is the better unit you will find most laptops with the wireless connection will either be celeron m or pentium m.

The Truth is right in saying that there is 2 main laptop categories out there at the minute but it isnt between power and battery life, its between wireless and non wireless. The main question would be are you needing a wireless connection? if so go there is 2 options go for one with the best spec with the wireless built in or go for one without and spend an extra 25 pounds for a wireless adaptor.

If the answer is no then just go for the best spec for your price range then it will last longer.

I use a P4 with a wireless built into the mother board - great spec only downside 45-60 mins battery life. Wireless network connectivity should be must have no matter what option you go for.

I really don't think proccessor speed is an issue with online poker - i keep getting a pop-up saying I'm running out of memory (with intel) and the display has a nervous braekdown when I close a folder but I don't have any probs when thes occur
