Is this possible for non-american citizens? I currently have a few thousand dollars online earning me no interest in neteller, I assume a lot of you are in similar situations. With the exchange rate being terrible at the moment i dont particularly want to withdraw the money and change it into pounds.
So does anyone know if its possible to either open an account with an american bank or open an account that is held in dollars with a bank such as HSBC?
Many thanks.

Yeah, it's possible. I've got one with Bank of Scotland. Most banks (if not all) will offer such a service. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation should be able to sort you out. Just go into your branch and ask to open a foreign currency account in USD.

HSBC do a dollar account and a euro account which I've looked into opening both. However check out the fee's as they often charge an annual fee and individual transaction fee which can make these accounts a tad experience.

Pretend it's called Halifax. That's worst, bloody Northeners. What with their flat caps and whippets. Has anybody started a ABN's group???

This is a terrific idea; I've been thinking for a while about using my US citizenship to open a bank account in dollars to go with my new $$ Neteller account; it would mean applying for a social security number though.
This looks like a good alternative...
Please let us know how you get on if you go for it!

When I was last in New York, they asked me for a Social Security Number. Maybe that's because I was waving my American passport at them though
