as u say ' PLAYING LIKE TERRY HURLOCK ' has taken Gattuso to a champions league winners medal and a world cup winners medalĀ  not bad eh

Thank you for accepting my point. Playing for Wattie, Gattuso played like an Italian Terry Hurlock.

Playing for better managers made him a World Cup and CL winner. Which is precisely what I said in my first post.

You log of early and what happens....wibble wibble

tankie - i admired the dandy dons when they played under fergie...hard as nails and good players

ironsides - a reasonable point that we beat holland which was a great home result 2 years ago....what was the result in the 2nd leg...we got murdellated...so kinda took the shine of it. nearly aginst italy disnae count..but fair play on the holland game . as for only beating what is put in front of us for the most part we havent
- laz point on wattie stabilising the team is also fair but all that does is mean we are organised dross.

Jester willie - aw come off it , at least be balanced  - a few crazy points. when talking about rangers be accurate or at the least take the blinkers off...you and i both know who has gotten the furthest in europe in the last 20 years and the clue is it isnae rangers.
For the record aberdeen were ther last team to win a european tournament - big up them
rangers nearly getting to a european final....i nearly won the lotto ..got a tenner..
As for wattie personally no point in going into his record  - he is what he is ..which in my humble opinion a journeyman manager who excelled in scotland against a bankrupt celtic team being run into the ground...he did ok with the vast resources he had - he should have done better.

As for scotland - I personally would love to see a successfull scotland team...it would be fantastic. I enjoy when they win, more so if i have a few bob on it

but i will not listen to mad rambling about forces in international football and genius managers...that way lies madness Cheesy

1st of all Berti has never won the world cup as manager and secondly Walter is a tactical genius he proved it with Rangers and he is now proving it with scotland. The proof's in the pudding m8 just look at his record.

No World Cup - just Euro 96... not a bad achievement. as for Smith being a genius - I don't think so - he's a good solid old school manager & did well for a spell at Rangers, badly with Everton & has done well with Scotland - he's got us playing as a team again - but nothing he's done screams genius at me.

Walter Smith deserves credit for putting the ship back on course and the disaster of Bertie Vogts.
He seems to have got the team playing with a bit of confidence. Saying that, Scotland are in a very tough group with France, Italy and Ukraine.  They have got off to a good start, but have beaten two of the weaker teams in the group.
I think Scotland will end up battling for 3rd place with Ukraine.

The year Rangers almost won the champions league it was down to the last 8 and Rangers finished 2nd in there group unbeaten for the whole tournament. That IS the furthest a Scots team has gone in Europe in the last 20 years. FACT

Do you think a str8 beats a flush!?

I can't understand why anyone would take anything KB says seriously, hes just at the wind up.

If you stop responding to his baiting he'll soon get bored.

The transition from pailing mediocrity to serious contenders is never going to be instantaneous.

It's going to be an arduous journey, we may go past kinda allright, take a step back to underachieving, then move on to that side it's slightly scary to play against before we're finally taken seriously on the international stage.

Anyway my point is, what's wrong with having a journeyman manager for this journey?

(Or have I misunderstood the term journeyman  )

Ah tank you misunderstand me, to clarify
to me a journeyman manager is someone who is ok messing about organising a team and getting the basics right

i.e 4-4-2 left back at left back right back at right back etc..and can organise a team.

the difference between that and a class manager is someone who can intuatively pick holes in the opposition and mould his team to beat them.
that and the ability to develop players and coach them into playing and performing above their level.

i may be being misunderstood but what i believe is that we have neither a good team nor a "class manager" so i dont think we will "develop" or  become contenders...our society and the way we now breed our kids precludes that.

I have no particular gripe with the manager wattie as he`s doing ok with what we are and have...i do have a gripe with praise being liberally dispensed on the back of beating palpably weak teams and this being dressed up as progress..
talk of him developing into "scotlands greatest manager" is also  nuttier than a squirrel supermarket.

progress for me is taking something of quality teams on a regular basis...which wont happen not even overnight or in the medium term.
it is no suprise that we havent qualified for a major tournament for some years  - a position i do not see changing.

success or progress for me is not defined as being no longer beaten by the diddy teams..it is being considered a real threat.

a secret poll of managers if asked "scotland will be in your group how do you feel" would get the answer "great" that`ll be 4 - 6 points...when that changes ...or when i see it becoming even a remote possibility then i will shout fae the rooftops

a phrase used is "we want to be travelling in world football and bring back more than pen pals"

as BA Robertson said " i have a dream"....but this lot wont fulfil it

ScottishBandit if u read my post properly u will see i was purely stating the facts. Rangers European champions league run in 1993 is the furthest any Scots team has been in Europe in the last 20 years. THIS IS NOT UP FOR DISCUSSION IT IS A FACT and for u to bring up this 'final' in 2003 is a joke. Rangers achievement last season in becoming the 1st Scots team to reach the last 16 is going further in Europe than ur uefa final another FACT.

Patman get ur facts right before u come on here and spout ur crap. Calling Walter Smith a journeyman is a load of rubbish. He has managed 2 clubs so how on earth can u call him that ? Also how can u say Walter done ok at Rangers the guy is a legend at the club after winning numerous trophies and leading us to 9 in a row. Taking Rangers to within 1 game of the Champions League final was an incredible achievement and not one the Rangers fans will forget. Also he had to put up with the 3 foreigners rule so u can imagine how difficult it would have been having to mainly shop in the Scottish market.

Fairly pointless arguement, since the section of time, for some reason, stops just shy of the year Aberdeen won... And speaking as a fan of a club who haven't won bugger all in europe in 35 years, I'm well placed to comment. Cheesy
