I think i played it ok? I checked the turn because I didn't want to lead out and push either of them off the pot as at that stage I was pretty sure I was ahead in the hand and felt there were few outs on the river to significantly scare me into pushing to take the hand post turn (apart from another spade but I was willing to take the chance). I was holding a strong hand and knew one of them had to be fishing the flush due to the pattern of play in the game, and one persons play in particular (the eventual hand winner), up to that point, and I also knew he bet's heavily when he hits his hand. If I bet post turn and get reraised heavily I have to asume that someone has made the flush already or my two pair is beat, so it makes sense to take the free card. When the river came with the Ace of spade it was mission accomplished. I knew at least one of them had made their flush. I had to lead out on the river due to my position and the reraise made me think he was probably holding the K or Q of spades. There was no point me reraising anything other than allin as the only hand I could put him on to beat me was the straight flush and he was obviously going to call my allin, which was what I wanted. As it turns out that's exactly what he had. That's poker isn't it?

Any comments on my analysis and play of the hand? I still think I played it right and got unlucky. Or did I???

All ok, except I don't call from that position pre flop with A 8os in the first place.

If you hit your A or your 8 on the flop, you won't know where you are anyway.

Unless you hit the flop very hard (unlikely) you will have to fold to any bet.

A8 from E.P is a trash, so bin it before you get yourself into trouble.

personally i think you played it fine. I wish everyone only played top hands from early position.

It's also sixhanded so i might be coming in for a raise with that hand anyway.

You are 100% putting all your chips in there because 95% of the time you have the best hand and the other 5% is just bad luck.

I'd agree with this completely if it weren't for the table I was on. Most hands up to then had been contested by the blinds only on an unusually tight table. Any raise was generally taking the blinds, which at that stage weren't worth stealing. I felt at the time it was worth a limp on a tight table to try and hit something. If I raised and was reraised I would have mucked and lost more chips whereas a limp that was raised would give me the same info on this table. Any further thoughts? I agree totally with what you say in principle and I would rarely play a hand like that out of position.

I agree that it's perfectly fine to mess about with any two cards sometimes, but A x will  probably show the least return. You don't get paid if they have no A and the A flops, or alternatively, they do have an A, and it's bigger than yours.
