I was online earlier and the laptop decided to switch itself off, when I went to turn it on again it made a few beeps then smoke started coming out of the keyboard around the GHJVBNM keys. Also really smelt of burning.

It wasn't hot so I can't have overheated it.

What happened and can it be fixed?

Thanks, Poppet xx

Battery overheat?

Lots of manufacturers have been having problems with this recently.

I thought it could've been that and my Dad said the same thing, it was plugged into the mains at the time.

Bongo, is there anyway this can be fixed or is it fucked?

Just incase the smoke wasnt a clue Cheesy

Sounds to me if its in the middle of the laptop it could be the processor, bongo would know best though

Hard to say.

I'd wait for it to cool down and have a look at it, see if you can tell what caused it.

If it's in warranty i'd just let the retailer sort it out.

Its in the right area for it to be the processor, and if it's gone into a 'meltdown' it would depend on what damage has been done as to worth fixing or not.  Also, how old is it? lappys can be so cheap now that it isn't always better to fix if it's getting on a bit.

I'm not sure how old it is, Its a HP Compaq nc3000 I think, or nc6000? Something like that anyway, it's always worked perfectly

Mine is getting overly hot these days and tbh I think its simply that the cooling fan isnt working properly.

Its under warrenty but laptops tend to have to be sent away as they need to be opened in a dust free atmosphere and I cant bear to be with out it!

It will be sent away before the warrenty ends or if I get third degree burns on my bollox, whichever happens first.

Smoke coming out of the keyboard sounds v dodgy tho Poppet. Im fairly sure it wasnt meant to do that!

You should buy a 'laptop cooler', which is basically a tray with fans you put your laptop on top of.

My dad has just taken it over to his mates house, think they're gonna open it up and have a look.
