A little gem........

came across this in a biography I am reading...


In the 1950s there is a State Banquet at Windsor Castle honouring Charles de Gaulle, hosted by our Prime Minister Harold MacMillan.

Conversation between the aloof MacMillans and the snooty de Gaulle's has ground to a halt. Anglo French relations are not exactly showing "l'entente cordiale".

In a last attempt to get a conversation going Lady Macmillian turns to Mme De Gaulle and says

" If there were one thing in the world you could have, what would it be?"

Everyone in the room falls silent as Mme De Gaulle ponders and then she declares loudly, very pleased with her rare command of English

"A Penis!"

Appalled glances are exchanged, with an uncomfortable silence only broken by General de Gaulle to correct his wife's pronounciation....

"Non, non...she means 'Appiness, 'Appiness"
