Hey all,

so ive been in indonesia a month now, teaching english. i wont bore you with tales from the classroom etc.

what i will say is in a country with a population nearing 250million, why havent the big casinos put $$$ in the right pockets so as gambling can be made legal.

i dont miss beer, i dont miss food which is recognisable, i dont miss the cold weather. however i DO miss poker!!!!!

i cant even get a game with other teachers, no one wants to play, i may have met the only texan who doesnt shuffle up and deal!!! his name is bruce and he is a twat.

so ive read a few books, even started working out out odds etc for randomn hands. btw are poker players the only people who use math everyday??? but nothing seems to kill my withdrawl symptoms.  i may have to buy wpt on the ps2 if all else fails.

anyway does anyone have any advice on poker related stuff i could be doing to sharpen my 'sklill' for my return.

oh and if anyone happens to work for a big casino etc please send some $$$ over here and i'll be sure to put it in the right pocket.

thanks guys

be lucky

Do the general public have money to gamble over there?  I thought it was a pretty poor nation.  They certainly have had their fair share of problems over the years.

yes they have money to gamble, or at least most do. and yes they have had there problems but then which country hasn't???  Its a big place 5000km from east to west so it has just about everything. but there is money here jakarta the capital has some amazing new buildings.

Being a muslim country probably doesn't help either.

spot on!! this is obviusly the biggest hurdle. but the version of islam here is not the one depicted in the daily mail. men and women are pretty much equal and people even break ramadhan without fear.   oh and they have a lottery so....

it just seems a big market to miss out on.

terima kasih

Being a muslim country probably doesn't help either.

That's the main reason.  I'm no expert, but I believe lotteries and similar forms of 'gambling' are permitted under Islamic law, or they can 'work round' the law.

I doubt if poker would be seen as acceptable though.  What's the attitude towards alcohol in Indonesia.  I must admit, considering that it's the 4th largest country in the world, I know very little about it.

Every form of gambling is forbidden under islamic law, the Koran quotes as follows:

"Gambling is prohibited with absolute proof as the Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur'aan, "O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds ofalcoholic drinks), gambling, Al-Ansab, and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination ofsatan, handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful."

(Qur'aan 5:90)"

this includes the lottery and unfortunately also poker.

from the law books of Indonesia:

"Other matters concerning public policy:

When promoting goods by holding sweepstakes through the Internet, bear in mind that distributing foreign sweepstakes is not legal in Indonesia. Under current regulations, the distribution of sweepstakes in Indonesia requires special licenses which are not available for sweepstakes that are held overseas. Although this regulation, to our knowledge, has never been enforced on foreign parties distributing sweepstakes through the Internet, such enforcement is not impossible in certain circumstances for example, if there was a public outcry against particular sweepstake. Extra care, therefore, should be exercised in holding sweepstakes on the Internet.

Gambling and soliciting gambling is strictly illegal in Indonesia. They are criminal offences which are also regarded as against public morality. It would, therefore, be advisable to avoid specially targeting Indonesians to gamble via the Internet (e.g. by publishing advertisements on the net for this purpose), even if this gambling is carried out overseas. As we shall see in the next section, there are theories that would make it possible to regard that this action as a criminal act according to Indonesian law."

living in Saudi Arabia for many years in my younger monkey days and also working with a muslim in my current job, i learned all about their views towards gambling.

whilst i have a photographic memory for figures alas it doesnt work quite the same for me with words - so i knew about gambling being illegal in indonesia but i have to admit it was google that found me the quotes!! Wink
