The difference now is the new law. I admit I don't know the definitions (if any) in the old Act, but poker does appear to be defined as gaming/gambling under the new Act (unless someone wants to maintain that it is a sport!). The Secretary of state could define poker as outside the Act, but I think that is unlikely basically cos it's as easy to do your bollox in plo as any casino game and also other objectives of the Act are to ensure that criminals do not control any gambling activity, hence the individual licensing. IMO the way forward is that the Poker "community" put forward proposals to allow poker to be a profitable activity for operators while avoiding exploitation e.gs allowing rake say 5% max capped at 5 and tourneys 10% max. Put in a standard rule book and we have a proposal to put to the govt - the heads-up-their-arse casinos won't do anything.

when we start trying to get poker dealt with seperatrly under law we open the income tax can of worms how many pro poker players can honestly say they could live after giving up 30%+ of there income on tax.

as much as i would love to see a cad room open just round the corner from me, i would prefer under law for poker to please lumped in with all gambling and be restricted to places covered under the gaming act.

if they reclassify poker they will tax it, one of the main reasons for the new regulations is to get some income from the major sites that are at the moment based off shore, once they work out how much it could make for them they will start to tax the individuals too. And it wont be hard the sites will have records for them

I think this point has been debated before - if gambling profits were to be classified as income then losses could be offset against other income. The government would lose more than they would gain. Losses would be over-reported and wins under-reported. Your point is a red herring anyway, as it would apply whether or not poker was in casinos or elsewhere.

At the moment live poker is being held back because casinos aren't really that interested. If they or anyone else with the relevant license were able to charge a reasonable amount to provide poker they would promote and advertise games and tournaments. I would also like to see limit games for newbies instead of the omnipresent dealers choice pot limit where new players get fleeced in moments and never return.

Double Up - I agree this thread is in the wrong section of our Forum, as is much other stuff. I aint too techy, but will try & tidy things up in thr next couple of days. Ironside has made this point too - chances are, I shall end up getting him to sort it for me!

on tax a losing session wouldn't be able to be offset against a winning session under the proposals i have seen infact the winning in comps would be taxed at source. can you image a 300 comp with 100 players and only 20k in prize pool well thats how it would work if poker was taken away from its gaming status.

as poker is classed as gambling it has tax free status but means it has to be held in licenced venues under the gaming board, gutshot is trying to get round the old laws and will problery try getting round the new laws, but if the result is that poker is taken out of the gaming laws expect the result to be that poker winnings will be taxable.

so in the short of it if we want to be able to play poker in card rooms like gutshot outside of the gaming boards licences then we will have to expect the taxman to come knocking, or we can contiune to get tax free winnings but have to be aware of the fact that to play we need to comply with the gaming board.

Hello folks,

A couple of us from GPS took a trip down to the location of the new poker room today on our way back from town.

It's next door to the Glaswegian Bar on Bridge Street, it's on the site of the old 'Cafe Serghei' @ 67Bridge St.'.

The place was closed, but we chapped the door and spoke to one of the guys inside.  He says that the place is almost ready, but for some finishing touches and will be open for business from next Friday, June 10th.  The flyers etc.. were at the printers so never got anything more concrete.  Apparantely it's going to appear in Poker Europa magazine.

Had a peak through the door and the place looks rather plush, chandeliers, nice decor etc... although couldn't see any tables yet, I think they still had a bit of painting to do.

As for a license, they have a notice outside dated April, giving notice that they had applied for a Gaming License.

So... looks like next Friday it is folks,

I too play at the Riverboat, and am really looking forward to the opening of this new Cardroom on Bridge St.
