i think he had 2 overcards AK maybe, he checked the flop (didn't hit) but flat calls your bet (fishing), checked turn gives him the chance to steal at the end.
I love to bet the flop and check the turn, attracts a lot of bluffs on the river Grin

Would you say that I played the hand incorrectly. I'm undecided?

it depends on the way you look at it, you gave him a free card to hit an overpair which is not really a good thing cuz even though it wouldn't have cost you anymore money it could have lost what you already put in.
Though by giving the free card you gamble on him missing and give yourself the oportunity for a value bet or in this case a bluff on the river. The thing is if you didn't hit the river you couldn't have called his bet.
Personally i'd have bet the turn too, either win it there or find out if he has an overpair.

The problem is, I didn't put him on AK until the river bet.

He reraised before the flop, so I thought he may have had the overpair and was scared of the dangerous flop. - hence the flatcall. I bet half the pot because I thought he would fold the AK. - maybe should have bet a little more to stop him fishing. When he did call, I put him on either the overpair or a trapping play with trips. I therefore didn't fancy the bet on the turn. The hands I put him on may easily have reraised me and I would have lost the chance of a free card. When he bet the river, I decided to reraise (he wouldn't have had 9J) and hope that he had a set. The fact that he folded for the minimum raise probably means that he had AK. - but this wasn't the hand I put him on at the turn. - If I had, I would have, like you suggested, bet about half the pot again so he has to pay a decent amount to fish.

I guess he would probably bet the flop with an overpair, even with 2 players behind him. He may have hit a set, but now I think about it, the chances that he would have a pocket pair like that after reraising preflop is quite slim.

The question is? Do I want to keep him in by betting half the pot on the flop, or should I bet more to get rid of his AK?

Hey snoop, have you seen the barclays advert with Steve Bruce gargling "road to amerillo"?
Absolute classic, but most just won't get the joke Grin Grin

Caught the end of it today. Thought it was Bruce, but wasn't convinced.

Could you describe the advert?

I'm not a bluenose by the way.

I can only imagine he had AK. Would he really fold a set?
