what is your view on speechplay and what should and shouldn't be allowed? are you one who likes speechplay? do you rate yourself at it, and why? how do you respond when you are on the receiving end?

at what point does speechplay become a moody?

Something puzzles me too...at my local haunts I can say anything except declare my ACTUAL hand

So if someone asks me, "have you got Aces", and I have, its ok to lie and say no but not to double bluff and say "yes"

If I do, my hand can be declared dead

any other game you can think of where lying is acceptable but telling the truth is a no-no?

You CAN declare your actual hand without it being declared dead in some Venues though.

In Bolton on Saturday, someone said to Chubbs Nowab - "have you got Aces?". "Yes" he replied. And he did......! AND the guy called, & was busted. I don't see that either party did anything wrong "legally". If Chubbs had said "No", that's a different matter, but he's a proper man & told the truth. Personally, I'd have avoided the question, or said "pay to find out".

This is the big problem with rules about speechplay.  You should either be able to say anything or nothing.  A rule that says that you can talk about your hand without revealing it is absurd.

I have no problem at all with speech-play, but I certainly don't approve of it when it descends to personal insults. I don't play poker so some idiot can sit & insult me for my personal & physical shortcomings.

In the last 12 months, we have seen 3 or 4 speech-play protaganists emerge on the domestic tournament circuit, & they are all very good players. They do their speech-play thing, bla bla bla, & I sit there thinking "ffs boys, get on with it will ya, the clock is running, yawn....". 

Does the speech-play work? I'm not sure. I don't think it does, well not on me, anyway, but maybe I am wrong, & it makes all the difference, & it's what makes them good at the game. I'd bet long odds against it though.....! I think it's an attention-seeking thing, if I'm honest.

Most of the really good players I respect don't bother with it much. I'm talking Colclough, JP Kelly, Thewy, Gale (WHAT a great player he is!), Conor Tate, Citrone, Bambos, Ashby, Nash, Green, Hussain, Gardner, Wernick, Praz, Rokach etc. Gosney might issue a few droll remarks, but they are worth their weight in gold just to listen to, he's seriously "dry".....! Roland does a bit, but always with a disarming smile, how can one not enjoy that?

What I do find amusing are those who insist on asking "what did you have?". Frustrated by the lack of a reply, they ask again...and again...and again...meanwhile, the entire table is pissing itself with laughter!
