Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-2 in 63 minutes!!!!!

Didn't see that match, but glad Serena won. It's probably the only time I've wanted her to though, she always used to knock my favourites out. Fantastic player though, no doubt about that.

Don't really follow tennis too much, just saw on the telly that she was 81st in the world and unseeded in this due to lengthy injuries, no wonder she was a little pleased Cheesy

Yes, her ranking is now up to 14th, only the 3rd unseeded player to win Austrailan Open.

I have never been keen on Serena or Venus, they made womens tennis boring for a long time. I thought that was them out of the way.  I prefer players like Hingis, Henan and Clijsters who aren't build like Mike Tyson. It is a shame that Clijsters is retiring at the end of the season, she is only in her mid 20's . I never used to like Davenport, but she has grown on me over the years, she is a really down to earth person in any interview I have read with her.

I'm of the same opinion on the Williams sisters. I always found them to be arrogant (especially Serena).
Lindsay Davenport grew on me over the years too. Last time I went to Wimbledon I saw her in the village, stood outside the beer garden I was drinking in..So, never one to miss an opportunity..I asked her to get her picture taken with me. I tell you something, at  5'9'' and a half, I'm not used to being towered over by other girls, but she is HUGE. I read online that she's 6'3. Made for a funny photo anyway.  Wink

I'm not a particular "fan" of Serena either, but credit where credit is due, today she blew Sharapova off the court, and her fitness level as an athlete is unquestionable:

Not sure I'd describe Serena as a "supreme athlete" and I've never been a fan of her or her power game but there's no doubt that when she's on form she is totally unstoppable.

Would have been easy for her, with all that money in the bank plus apparent other career opportunities, to quit the game after her recent injuries.

So huge congratulations to her, on both a fantastic comeback overall and especially a devastating destruction of the new world #1 in the final

Whatever your views, it has to be good for women's tennis to have her back in the mix.

I agree, it's a real shame that Kim Clijsters is retiring this year

think she should leave the roids alone a bit though. She went to her doctor last week and said she had problems with hairs growing on her boobs because of them, when the doc asked how far down they were growing she said they went right down to her nads Smiley

I think Hingis is blinding,

I remember when she played Graff in the final of the French open years ago and she was getting ruined by the crowed for gamesmanship but no matter how much they booed and jeered her she carried on unperturbed doing under arm serves and continually complaining to the umpire, I thought that took a lot of bottle for such a young girl in front of a crowed that had become intimidatingly partisan.
