This is a copy of an article in yesterdays local paper:

Pangasininn is the name of the district/county i reside in:

MANAOAG::--- A businessman here was among several shooting fatalities in Pangasinan in the past fortnight as gunmen defied the ban on carrying firearms in the run up to the local elections in May:

The local trader, Virgilio Garcia, was shot several times at close range last Friday Morning near a hotel in barangay(village) Sapang here.

He was about to board his van after coming from the hotel when the lone gunman suddenly shot him 6 times with a .45 calibre pistol.

Several empty bullet shells were found on the spot where Garcia fell almost instantaneously lifeless.

Investigators said some witnesses recognised the killer who fled on a red motorcycle.

Also last friday a councilman of barangay Santa Ines was wounded in another shooting incident.

Several others were either killed or wounded recently in seperate shooting cases in the cities of Dagupan, Urdaneta, San Carlos and in Pangasinan towns, including Mangaldan, where the Chairman of the Meat Vendors Association was shot and killed whilst drinking coffee in the Public market last Saturday, and on the following day a Policeman was shot and seriously injured as he rode his motorcycle along the highway.

The violent incidents sparked renewed denunciations against policeman's failure to confiscate loose firearms and strictly enforce the election-related gun ban. (RR News Service)
